Non-magnetic ion site disorder effects on the quantum magnetism of a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Here, with the motivation to study how non-magnetic ion site disorder affects the quantum magnetism of Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet, we performed DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystalline samples of Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 with Sr doping on non-magnetic Ba 2+ ion sites. The results show that Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 exhibits (i) a two-step magnetic transition at 2.7 K and 3.3 K, respectively; (ii) a possible canted 120 degree spin structure at zero field with reduced ordered moment as 1.24 μ B /Co; (iii) a series of spin state transitions for both H∥ab-plane and H∥c-axis. For H∥ab-plane, the magnetization plateau feature related to the up–up–down phase is significantly suppressed; (iv) an inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with only one gapped mode at zero field, which splits to one gapless and one gapped mode at 9 T. All these features are distinctly different from those observed for the parent compound Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , which demonstrates that the non-magnetic ion site disorder (the Sr doping) plays a complex role on the magnetic properties beyond the conventionally expected randomization of the exchange interactions. We propose the additional effects including the enhancement of quantum spin fluctuations and introduction of a possible spatial anisotropy through the local structural distortions.

Stability and Activity of Cobalt Antimonate for Oxygen Reduction in Strong Acid

Guided by computational Pourbaix screening and high-throughput experiments aimed at the development of precious-metal-free fuel cells, we investigate rutile CoSb 2 O 6 as an electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction in 1 M sulfuric acid. Following 4 h of catalyst conditioning at 0.7 V vs RHE, operation at this potential for 20 h yielded an average current density of –0.17 mA cm –2 with corrosion at a rate of 0.04 nm hour –1 that is stoichiometric with catalyst composition. Surface Pourbaix analysis of the (111) surface identified partial H coverage under operating conditions. The Sb active site has an HO* binding free energy of 0.49 eV, which is near the peak of the kinetic 4e – ORR volcano for transition-metal oxides in acidic conditions. Furthermore, the experimental demonstration of operational stability and computational identification of a reaction pathway with favorable energetics place rutile CoSb 2 O 6 among the most promising precious-metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction in acidic media.

Relaxation time approximations in PAOFLOW 2.0

Abstract Regardless of its success, the constant relaxation time approximation has limited validity. Temperature and energy dependent effects are important to match experimental trends even in simple situations. We present the implementation of relaxation time approximation models in the calculation of Boltzmann transport in 2.0 and apply those to model band-structures. In addition, using a self-consistent fitting of the model parameters to experimental conductivity data, we provide a flexible tool to extract scattering rates with high accuracy. We illustrate the approximations using simple models and then apply the method to GaAs, Si, $$\hbox {Mg}_3\hbox {Sb}_2$$ Mg 3 Sb 2 , and $$\hbox {CoSb}_3$$ CoSb 3 .

Self-consistent GW method: O(N) algorithm for polarizability and self energy

In this work, an efficient implementation of the self-consistent GW method in the FlapwMBPT code [1] is presented. It features the evaluation of polarizability and self-energy which scales linearly with respect to the system size. Altogether the computational time scaling was measured to be be-tween linear and quadratic in the applications to silicon supercells with up to 72 atoms. Application to such materials as paracostibite CoSbS, supercells of La 2 CuO 4 (up to 56 atoms) and SmB 6 , illustrate the potential of the approach in computational material science.

Diffuse Galactic low energy gamma ray continuum emission

We investigate the origin of diffuse low-energy Galactic gamma-ray continuum down to about 30 keV. We calculate gamma-ray emission via bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton scattering by propagating an unbroken electron power law injection spectrum and employing a Galactic emmissivity model derived from COSB observations. To maintain the low energy electron population capable of producing the observed continuum via bremsstrahlung, a total power input of 4 x 10 exp 41 erg/s is required. This exceeds the total power supplied to the nuclear cosmic rays by about an order of magnitude.

Skutterudite Compounds For Power Semiconductor Devices

New semiconducting materials with p-type carrier mobility values much higher than state-of-art semiconductors discovered. Nine compounds, antimonides CoSb(sub3), RhSb(sub3), IrSb(sub3), arsenides CoAs(sub3), RhAs(sub3), IrAs(sub3), and phosphides CoP(sub3), RhP(sub3) and IrP(sub3), exhibit same skutterudite crystallographic structure and form solid solutions of general composition Co(1-x-y)RH(x)Ir(y)P(1-w-z)As(w)Sb(z). Materials exhibit high hole mobilities, high doping levels, and high electronic figures of merit. Some compositions show great potential for application to thermoelectric devices.

Solid Solutions Formation: Improving the Thermoelectric Properties of Skutterudites

Materials with skutterudite structure have been known for a long time. Some of them are semiconductors. A typical skutterudite is CoSb(sub 3) and its thermoelectric properties were partially studied in the 1960's. Recently, it has been discovered that many skutterudite compounds are thermoelectrics with promising future.
