Co-Hydrotreating of Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis Oils with Straight-Run Diesel

Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass provides an opportunity for producing stabilized bio-oils (CFP oils) that can be further processed into hydrocarbon transportation fuels via hydroprocessing. Standalone hydrotreating of CFP oils has been pursued and has been shown to be able to produce hydrocarbon products with low oxygen contents of <1wt%, but the process is costly due to the high requirements of hydrogen and high capital costs. The costs can be reduced by co-processing in refineries, which takes advantage of the existing refinery infrastructure and the economies of the larger scale of petroleum processing operations. In this contribution, we evaluated co-hydrotreating of CFP oil with straight-run diesel in a laboratory continuous hydrotreating reactor. The CFP oil had been produced over a bi-functional metal-acid catalyst (Pt/TiO2) and contained 17 wt% oxygen on dry basis, and it was fed to the reactor together with straight-run diesel in the proportion of 20 vol%:80 vol%. The co-hydrotreated diesel products had acceptable cetane numbers (>40), and the calculated carbon efficiencies were high (~95%) for the CFP portion of the feed mixtures. Biogenic carbon incorporation in the product was confirmed by C-14 analysis. Sulfided NiMo catalyst gave better performance with respect to the diesel product quality than CoMo did due to the higher hydrogenation activity of NiMo. A comparison of standalone hydrotreating of the CFP oil and the straight-run diesel to co-hydrotreating showed good correspondence. Major challenges and risks associated with co-hydrotreating are discussed in this presentation.

Performance of an X-γ ray detection system based on a thick silicon LGAD

We present the performance of a X-γ ray detection systems based on a 300 µm thick silicon low-gain avalanche diode (LGAD) and of an equivalent Diode structure without the gain layer, read-out by a custom-made low-noise charge amplifier. For the LGAD structure, the multiplication gains M s from 10.2 to 19.3 are measured, and the Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC) components have been studied in detail. As expected, a significant reduction of the white and 1/f voltage series and dielectric ENC components is observed with increasing gain, shortening the optimum peaking time to τ = 0.4÷8 μs depending on the gain value, with respect to the standard diode, while the parallel ENC component increases proportionally to the gain up to M s = 15. Setting the gain M s = 12.7, a minimum ENC = 34.5 electrons r.m.s. (298 eV FWHM) at τ = 1 μs is found. However, the electronic noise, evaluated on the pulser FWHM, is found to only marginally contribute to the width of the spectral lines of a radioactive source, which are dominated instead by the statistical noise of the charge multiplication within the LGAD structure. The spectral lines' excess width is found to be proportional to the signal multiplication gain M s and increases with the energy of the photons. A minimum line width of 850 eV FWHM at 13.9 keV is measured at room temperature, τ = 2 μs and a gain M s = 10.2.

The IDEA detector concept for FCC-ee

A detector concept, named IDEA, optimized for the physics and running conditions at the FCC-ee is presented. After discussing the expected running conditions and the main physics drivers, a detailed description of the individual sub-detectors is given. These include: a very light tracking system with a powerful vertex detector inside a large drift chamber surrounded by a silicon wrapper, a high resolution dual readout crystal electromagnetic calorimeter, an HTS based superconducting solenoid, a dual readout fiber calorimeter and three layers of muon chambers embedded in the magnet flux return yoke. Some examples of the expected detector performance, based on fast and full simulation, are also given.

Toward the application of the Risk-Based Maintenance approach to a hydrogen-fueled manufacturing plant

Safety, reliability, and maintenance of hydrogen-based equipment, including Risk-Based Maintenance (RBM), have recently gained increasing attention, as hydrogen, while key to decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, raises safety concerns. However, two literature gaps limit the development of risk-based strategies for hydrogen technologies. First, existing RBM methodologies do not account for hydrogen-specific components, such as electrolyzers, which differ from conventional equipment. Second, available studies on electrolyzer reliability remain largely qualitative or laboratory-scale. This study addresses these gaps by proposing an adapted RBM methodology tailored to hydrogen-fueled manufacturing facilities. Integrating qualitative tools (e.g., FMEA) with probabilistic models (e.g., Bayesian Networks) enables comprehensive hazardous scenarios identification and likelihood estimation. A conceptual layout of a glass furnace supplied by a 3 MW PEM electrolyzer is considered as a case study to demonstrate the feasibility of the adapted RBM framework in identifying high-risk components and enabling maintenance prioritization, potentially improving plant safety.

Introducing metal–sulfur active sites in metal–organic frameworks via post-synthetic modification for hydrogenation catalysis

Metal–sulfur active sites play a central role in catalytic processes such as hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, yet the majority of active sites in these compounds reside on the surfaces and edges of catalyst particles, limiting overall efficiency. Here we present a strategy to embed metal–sulfur active sites into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by converting bridging or terminal chloride ligands into hydroxide and subsequently into sulfide groups through post-synthetic modification. We apply this method to two representative MOF families: one featuring one-dimensional metal–chloride chains and another containing discrete multinuclear metal clusters. Crystallographic and spectroscopic analyses confirm structural integrity and sulfide incorporation, and the transformation is monitored by in situ total scattering methods. The sulfided MOFs display enhanced catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes using molecular hydrogen. Density functional theory calculations indicate that sulfur incorporation promotes homolytic metal–ligand bond cleavage and facilitates H 2 activation. This work establishes an approach to construct MOFs featuring accessible metal–sulfide sites.

Mapping the nonequilibrium order parameter of a quasi-two dimensional charge density wave system

The driving force of a charge density wave (CDW) transition in quasi-two dimensional systems is still debated, while being crucial in understanding electronic correlation in such materials. Here we use femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with computational methods to investigate the coherent lattice dynamics of a prototypical CDW system. The photo-induced temporal evolution of the periodic lattice distortion associated with the amplitude mode reveals the dynamics of the free energy functional governing the order parameter. Our approach establishes that optically-induced screening rather than CDW melting at the electronic level leads to a transiently modified potential which explains the anharmonic behaviour of the amplitude mode and discloses the structural origin of the symmetry-breaking phase transition.

Pixel response characterization of the ARCADIA fully depleted MAPS

Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) achieved widespread use in several scientific applications, thanks to their properties, such as low material budget and high granularity. The ARCADIA INFN project developed a Fully-Depleted MAPS (FD-MAPS), using a modified LFoundry 110 nm CIS process. This work presents the first laboratory characterization of the ARCADIA MD3 prototype. Measurements include threshold uniformity studies using both test-pulse injection and a 55 Fe source, as well as threshold and noise calibration achieved thanks to monochromatic X-ray sources. Ultimately, charge-collection efficiency is evaluated using an infrared laser setup.

The Kangaroo’s First Hop: The Early Fast Cooling Phase of EP250108a/SN 2025kg

Fast X-ray transients are a rare and poorly understood population of events. Previously difficult to detect in real time, the launch of the Einstein Probe with its Wide-field X-ray Telescope has led to a rapid expansionof the sample and allowed the exploration of these transients across the electromagnetic spectrum. EP250108a is a recently detected example linked to an optical counterpart, SN 2025kg, or “the kangaroo.” Together with a companion Letter we present our observing campaign and analysis of this event. In this letter, we focus on the early evolution of the optical counterpart over the first 6 days, including our measurement of the redshift of z = 0.17641. We compare to other supernovae and fast transients showing similar features, finding significant similarities with SN 2006aj and SN 2020bvc, and show that the source is well modelled by a rapidly expanding cooling blackbody. We show the observed X-ray and radio properties are consistent with a collapsar-powered jet that is low energy (≲10 51 erg) and/or fails to break out of the dense material surrounding it. While we examine the possibility that the optical emission emerges from the shock produced as the supernova ejecta expand into a dense shell of circumstellar material, due to our X-ray and radio inferences, we favour a model where it arises from a shocked cocoon resulting from a trapped jet. This makes SN 2025 one of the few examples of this currently observationally rare event.

Pilot and Controller Evaluations of Separation Function Allocation in Air Traffic Management

Two human-in-the-loop simulation experiments were conducted in coordinated fashion to investigate the allocation of separation assurance functions between ground and air and between humans and automation. The experiments modeled a mixed-operations concept in which aircraft receiving ground-based separation services shared the airspace with aircraft providing their own separation service (i.e., self-separation). Ground-based separation was provided by air traffic controllers without automation tools, with tools, or by ground-based automation with controllers in a managing role. Airborne self-separation was provided by airline pilots using self-separation automation enabled by airborne surveillance technology. The two experiments, one pilot-focused and the other controller-focused, addressed selected key issues of mixed operations, assuming the starting point of current-day operations and modeling an emergence of NextGen technologies and procedures. In the controller-focused experiment, the impact of mixed operations on controller performance was assessed at four stages of NextGen implementation. In the pilot-focused experiment, the limits to which pilots with automation tools could take full responsibility for separation from ground-controlled aircraft were tested. Results indicate that the presence of self-separating aircraft had little impact on the controllers' ability to provide separation services for ground-controlled aircraft. Overall performance was best in the most automated environment in which all aircraft were data communications equipped, ground-based separation was highly automated, and self-separating aircraft had access to trajectory intent information for all aircraft. In this environment, safe, efficient, and highly acceptable operations could be achieved for twice today's peak airspace throughput. In less automated environments, reduced trajectory intent exchange and manual air traffic control limited the safely achievable airspace throughput and negatively impacted the maneuver efficiency of self-separating aircraft through high-density airspace. In a test of scripted conflicts with ground-managed aircraft, flight crews of self-separating aircraft prevented separation loss in all conflicts with detection time greater than one minute. In debrief, pilots indicated a preference for at least five minute's alerting notice and trajectory intent information on all aircraft. When intent information on ground-managed aircraft was available, self-separating aircraft benefited from fewer conflict alerts and fewer required deviations from trajectory-based operations.

First evaluation of the tracking performance of the ARCADIA Fully Depleted MAPS with 120 GeV proton beam

This work presents test beam characterization of the ARCADIA Main Demonstrator 3, a 200 $μ$m thick Fully Depleted MAPS developed using a custom LFoundry 110 nm CIS process on a high-resistivity substrate. Measurements using a 120 GeV proton beam demonstrate a detection efficiency exceeding 99% and a spatial resolution down to 3.8 $μ$m. The study evaluates cluster size, spatial resolution, and efficiency as a function of the threshold, front-end currents, and backside bias voltage.
