Low temperature catalytic conversion of CH 4 , CO 2 , and C 2 H 4 to value-added C 3 oxygenates and olefins via C 1 -C 2 coupling on Pd-Au/CeO 2

The catalytic conversion of CH 4 and CO 2 in the presence of more reactive co-reactants C 2 H 4 and O 2 on Pd-Au/CeO 2 is achieved at 200 °C and elevated pressures. Propene and acetone were produced from the catalyzed reaction of CH 4 +C 2 H 4 +O 2 ; addition of CO 2 to the reactant stream produced methyl acetate (MAc) but it significantly reduced the C-selectivities of propene and acetone. DRIFTS experiments confirmed the formation of methoxy species from CH 4 +CO 2 at 200 °C, which is an intermediate in the formation of MAc. Here, control experiments with blanks, and with CeO 2 did not show any propene, acetone, or MAc products. The complete oxidation of C 2 H 4 was avoided; the catalyst is stable, and reactant conversions and product yields were sustained for the observed 1200 min time-on-stream, indicating that there is little or no carbon deposition and sintering. This direct coupling of CH 4 and C 2 H 4 intermediates to higher carbon-number products at 200 °C is significant.

Bonding in zerovalent Ni compounds - NiN2 and Ni(N2)4 compared with NiCO and Ni(CO)4

Calculations are carried out on NiN2, which may be considered a prototypical metal surface-ligand system. A large Gaussian basis set and an MCPF treatment of electron correlation are used. Consideration is also given to the 2Sigma(+) states of NiN2(-), NiCO(-), and NiN2(+), the low-lying 2Delta and 2Pi states of NiN2(+), and the 1A1 states of Ni(CO)4 and Ni(N2)4.

Higher Dimensionality in the Mg–Co–B System: Synthesis and Structure of Incommensurate Composite Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4

Guided by high-temperature in situ X-ray diffraction, the discovery and synthesis of Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4 (ε ≈ 0.272) using a MgH 2 hydride precursor is reported, along with a detailed crystal structure description and measurement of magnetic properties. The mismatch in lattice periodicities between Mg and Co–B substructures places Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4 in the family of incommensurate composite crystals and prompted structural refinement in a (3 + 1)-dimensional model. The structure of Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4 (P4 2 /ncm(00γ)s00s, a = 6.75847(7) Å, c = 3.94007(8) Å, q = (0, 0, 1.2721(3))) was refined from neutron powder diffraction and high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction data and confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4 is isostructural to Nd 1+ε Fe 4 B 4 and several related ternary borides with 0.07 ≤ ε ≤ 0.17, with Mg occupying the rare-earth site. Satellite reflections in the electron diffraction patterns hinted at positional modulation of the transition metal–boron substructure by Mg atoms, but this could not be refined from the neutron or X-ray diffraction data. Low-temperature magnetic measurements show no indications of long-range magnetic ordering or superconductivity down to 5 K. DFT calculations confirmed the absence of a magnetically ordered ground state and the stability of a 5:4 supercell (ε = 0.25) relative to the fully commensurate structure. Neutron diffraction and synthesis from elemental Mg demonstrated that Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4 is not a hydrogen-stabilized phase. Mg 1+ε Co 4 B 4 represents the second compound reported in the Mg–Co–B system and the first superspace symmetry model of a Nd 1+ε Fe 4 B 4 -type incommensurate composite compound refined from powder diffraction data.

Noncollinear antiferromagnetic order in the buckled honeycomb lattice of magnetoelectric Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction

Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 exhibits a three-dimensional magnetic lattice based on the buckled honeycomb motif. It shows unusual magnetoelectric effects, including the sign change and nonlinearity. These effects cannot be understood without the detailed knowledge of the magnetic structure. Herein, we report neutron diffraction and direction-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 single crystals. In this work, below 20.3 K, we find a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the alternating buckled and flat honeycomb layers of Co 2+ ions stacked along the c axis. Within experimental accuracy, the magnetic moments lie in the ab plane. They form a canted antiferromagnetic structure with a tilt angle of ~14° at 15 K in the buckled layers, while the magnetic moments in each flat layer are collinear. This is directly evidenced by a finite (0, 0, 3) magnetic Bragg peak intensity, which would be absent in the collinear magnetic order. The magnetic space group is C2/c'. It is different from the previously reported C2/c' group, also found in the isostructural Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 . The revised magnetic structure successfully explains the major features of the magnetoelectric tensor of Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 within the framework of the spin-flop model.

Materials Data on RbH(CO)4 by Materials Project

RbH(CO)4 crystallizes in the monoclinic P2_1/c space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Rb1+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of Rb–O bond distances ranging from 2.88–3.50 Å. There are four inequivalent C+1.50+ sites. In the first C+1.50+ site, C+1.50+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The C–O bond length is 1.31 Å. In the second C+1.50+ site, C+1.50+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The C–O bond length is 1.28 Å. In the third C+1.50+ site, C+1.50+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The C–O bond length is 1.24 Å. In the fourth C+1.50+ site, C+1.50+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The C–O bond length is 1.25 Å. H1+ is bonded in a linear geometry to two O2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.08 Å) and one longer (1.42 Å) H–O bond length. There are four inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two equivalent Rb1+ and one C+1.50+ atom. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to three equivalent Rb1+ and one C+1.50+ atom. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to one Rb1+, one C+1.50+, and one H1+ atom. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a water-like geometry to two equivalent Rb1+, one C+1.50+, and one H1+ atom.
