Integrating the full four-loop negative geometries and all-loop ladder-type negative geometries in ABJM theory

The decomposition of the four-point ABJM amplituhedron into negative geometries produces compact integrands of logarithmic of amplitudes such that the infrared divergence only comes from the last loop integration, from which we can compute the cusp anomalous dimension of the ABJM theory. In this note, we integrate L – 1 loop momenta of the L-loop negative geometries for all four-loop negative geometries and a special class of all-loop ladder-type negative geometries by a method based on Mellin transformation, and from these finite quantities we extract the corresponding contribution to the cusp anomalous dimension. We find that the infrared divergence of a box-type negative geometry at L = 4 is weaker than other negative geometries, then only tree-type negative geometries contribute to the cusp anomalous dimension at L = 4. For the all-loop ladder-type negative geometries, we prove and conjecture some recursive structures as integral equations in Mellin space and find that they cannot contribute zeta values like ζ 3 , ζ 5 to the cusp anomalous dimension.

The lion, the witch, and the wormhole: ensemble averaging the symmetric product orbifold

Abstract We consider the ensemble average of two dimensional symmetric product orbifold CFTs Sym N (𝕋 D ) over the Narain moduli space. We argue for a bulk dual given byNcopies of an abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to topological gravity, endowed with a discrete gauge symmetry exchanging theNcopies. As a check of this proposal, we calculate the ensemble average of various partition and correlation functions of the symmetric product orbifold theory and compare the resulting expressions to gauge theory quantities in the bulk. We comment on the ensemble average of the tensionless string partition function on AdS 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 by considering the specific case ofD= 4 with the addition of supersymmetry.

Axion-gauge coupling quantization with a twist

The possible couplings of an axion to gauge fields depend on the global structure of the gauge group. If the Standard Model gauge group is minimal, or equivalently if fractionally charged color-singlet particles are forbidden, then the QCD axion’s Chern-Simons couplings to photons and gluons obey correlated quantization conditions. Specifically, the photon coupling can have a fractional part which is a multiple of 1/3, but which is determined by the gluon coupling. A consequence of this result is that, among all theories with a minimal gauge group and minimal axion coupling to gluons, the smallest possible axion-photon amplitude |g aγγ | arises for E/N = 8/3. This provides a new motivation for experiments targeting this axion-photon coupling.

Chern-Weil global symmetries and how quantum gravity avoids them

We draw attention to a class of generalized global symmetries, which we call “Chern-Weil global symmetries,” that arise ubiquitously in gauge theories. The Noether currents of these Chern-Weil global symmetries are given by wedge products of gauge field strengths, such as F 2 $\wedge$ H 3 and tr(F$^2_2$), and their conservation follows from Bianchi identities. As a result, they are not easy to break. However, it is widely believed that exact global symmetries are not allowed in a consistent theory of quantum gravity. As a result, any Chern-Weil global symmetry in a low-energy effective field theory must be either broken or gauged when the theory is coupled to gravity. In this paper, we explore the processes by which Chern-Weil symmetries may be broken or gauged in effective field theory and string theory. We will see that many familiar phenomena in string theory, such as axions, Chern-Simons terms, worldvolume degrees of freedom, and branes ending on or dissolving in other branes, can be interpreted as consequences of the absence of Chern-Weil symmetries in quantum gravity, suggesting that they might be general features of quantum gravity. We further discuss implications of breaking and gauging Chern-Weil symmetries for particle phenomenology and for boundary CFTs of AdS bulk theories. Chern-Weil global symmetries thus offer a unified framework for understanding many familiar aspects of quantum field theory and quantum gravity.

The quantum $\mathrm{UV}$-$\mathrm{IR}$ map for line defects in $$ \mathfrak{gl} $$(3)-type class $\mathcal{S}$ theories

We consider the quantum UV-IR map for line defects in class S theories of $\mathfrak{gl}$(3)-type. This map computes the protected spin character which counts framed BPS states with spin for the bulk-defect system. We give a geometric method of computing this map motivated by the physics of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and compute it explicitly in various examples. As a spin-off we propose a new way of computing a certain specialization of the HOMFLY polynomial for links in $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a sum over BPS webs attached to the link.

$T\bar{T}$ in JT Gravity and BF Gauge Theory

JT gravity has a first-order formulation as a two-dimensional BF theory, which can be viewed as the dimensional reduction of the Chern-Simons description of 3d 3 d gravity. We consider {T\overbar{T}} T T ¯ -type deformations of the (0+1) ( 0 + 1 ) -dimensional dual to this 2d 2 d BF theory and interpret the deformation as a modification of the BF theory boundary conditions. The fundamental observables in this deformed BF theory, and in its 3d 3 d Chern-Simons lift, are Wilson lines and loops. In the 3d 3 d Chern-Simons setting, we study modifications to correlators involving boundary-anchored Wilson lines which are induced by a {T\overbar{T}} T T ¯ deformation on the 2d 2 d boundary; results are presented at both the classical level (using modified boundary conditions) and the quantum-mechanical level (using conformal perturbation theory). Finally, we calculate the analogous deformed Wilson line correlators in 2d 2 d BF theory below the Hagedorn temperature where the principal series dominates over the discrete series.

Sub-leading structures in superconformal indices: subdominant saddles and logarithmic contributions

We systematically study various sub-leading structures in the superconformal index of N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(N) gauge group. We concentrate in the superconformal index description as a matrix model of elliptic gamma functions and in the Bethe-Ansatz presentation. Our saddle-point approximation goes beyond the Cardy-like limit and we uncover various saddles governed by a matrix model corresponding to SU(N) Chern-Simons theory. The dominant saddle, however, leads to perfect agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz approach. We also determine the logarithmic correction to the superconformal index to be log N, finding precise agreement between the saddle-point and Bethe-Ansatz approaches in their respective approximations. We generalize the two approaches to cover a large class of 4d N = 1 superconformal theories. We find that also in this case both approximations agree all the way down to a universal contribution of the form log N. The universality of this last result constitutes a robust signature of this ultraviolet description of asymptotically AdS 5 black holes and could be tested by low-energy IIB supergravity.

Noncommutative gauge symmetry in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Abstract We show that a system of particles on the lowest Landau level can be coupled to a probe U(1) gauge field$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A μ in such a way that the theory is invariant under a noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry. While the temporal component$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A 0 of the probe field is coupled to the projected density operator, the spatial components$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A i are best interpreted as quantum displacements, which distort the interaction potential between the particles. We develop a Seiberg-Witten-type map from the noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry to a simpler version, which we call “baby noncommutative” gauge symmetry, where the Moyal brackets are replaced by the Poisson brackets. The latter symmetry group is isomorphic to the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. By using this map, we resolve the apparent contradiction between the noncommutative gauge symmetry, on the one hand, and the particle-hole symmetry of the half-filled Landau level and the presence of the mixed Chern-Simons terms in the effective Lagrangian of the fractional quantum Hall states, on the other hand. We outline the general procedure which can be used to write down effective field theories which respect the noncommutative U(1) symmetry.

On exotic consistent anomalies in (1+1)$d$: A ghost story

We revisit ’t Hooft anomalies in (1+1) d d non-spin quantum field theory, starting from the consistency and locality conditions, and find that consistent U(1) and gravitational anomalies cannot always be canceled by properly quantized (2+1) d d classical Chern-Simons actions. On the one hand, we prove that certain exotic anomalies can only be realized by non-reflection-positive or non-compact theories; on the other hand, without insisting on reflection-positivity, the exotic anomalies present a caveat to the inflow paradigm. For the mixed U(1) gravitational anomaly, we propose an inflow mechanism involving a mixed U(1) \times × SO(2) classical Chern-Simons action with a boundary condition that matches the SO(2) gauge field with the (1+1) d d spin connection. Furthermore, we show that this mixed anomaly gives rise to an isotopy anomaly of U(1) topological defect lines. The isotopy anomaly can be canceled by an extrinsic curvature improvement term, but at the cost of creating a periodicity anomaly. We survey the holomorphic bc b c ghost system which realizes all the exotic consistent anomalies, and end with comments on a subtlety regarding the anomalies of finite subgroups of U(1).

Electric polarization in inhomogeneous crystals

In this work, we derive the charge density up to second order in spatial gradient in inhomogeneous crystals using the semiclassical coarse graining procedure based on the wave packet method. It can be recast as divergence of polarization, whose first-order contribution consists of three parts, a perturbative correction to the original Berry connection expression, a topological part that can be written as an integral of the Chern-Simons 3-form, and a previously-unknown, quadrupolelike contribution. The topological part can be related to the quantized fractional charge carried by a vortex in two-dimensional systems. We then generalize our results to the multiband case and show that the quadrupolelike contribution plays an important role, as it makes the total polarization gauge-independent. Finally, we verify our theory in several model systems.

Entanglement in the Quantum Hall Matrix Model

Characterizing the entanglement of matrix degrees of freedom is essential for understanding the holographic emergence of spacetime. The Quantum Hall Matrix Model is a gauged U(N) matrix quantum mechanics with two matrices whose ground state is known exactly and describes an emergent spatial disk with incompressible bulk dynamics. We define and compute an entanglement entropy in the ground state associated to a cut through the disk. There are two contributions. A collective field describing the eigenvalues of one of the matrices gives a gauge-invariant chiral boundary mode leading to an expected logarithmic entanglement entropy. Further, the cut through the bulk splits certain ‘off-diagonal’ matrix elements that must be duplicated and associated to both sides of the cut. Sewing these duplicated modes together in a gauge-invariant way leads to a bulk ‘area law’ contribution to the entanglement entropy. All of these entropies are regularized by finite N.

Dynamical piezomagnetic effect in time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetals with axionic charge density waves

Charge density waves (CDWs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been shown to induce an exotic axionic insulating phase in which the sliding mode (phason) of the CDW acts as a dynamical axion field, giving rise to a large positive magnetoconductance. In this work, we predict that dynamical strain can induce a bulk orbital magnetization in time-reversal (TR)-invariant WSMs that are gapped by a CDW. Here, we term this effect the “dynamical piezomagnetic effect” (DPME). Unlike in J. Gooth et al., the DPME introduced in this work occurs in a bulk-constant (i.e., static and spatially homogeneous in the bulk) CDW, and does not rely on fluctuations, such as a phason. By studying the low-energy effective theory and a minimal tight-binding (TB) model, we find that the DPME originates from an effective valley axion field that couples the electromagnetic gauge field with a strain-induced pseudogauge field. In particular, whereas the piezoelectric effects studied in previous works are characterized by 2D Berry curvature, the DPME represents the first example of a fundamentally 3D strain effect originating from the Chern-Simons 3-form. We further find that the DPME has a discontinuous change at a critical value of the phase of the CDW order parameter. We demonstrate that, when there is a jump in the DPME, the surface of the system undergoes a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT), while the bulk remains gapped. Hence, the DPME provides a bulk signature of the boundary TQPT in a TR-invariant Weyl CDW.

Proving the 6d Cardy formula and matching global gravitational anomalies

A Cardy formula for 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) conjectured by Di Pietro and Komargodski in [1] governs the universal behavior of the supersymmetric partition function on S^1_\beta \times S^5 S β 1 × S 5 in the limit of small \beta β and fixed squashing of the S^5 S 5 . For a general 6d SCFT, we study its 5d effective action, which is dominated by the supersymmetric completions of perturbatively gauge-invariant Chern-Simons terms in the small \beta β limit. Explicitly evaluating these supersymmetric completions gives the precise squashing dependence in the Cardy formula. For SCFTs with a pure Higgs branch (also known as very Higgsable SCFTs), we determine the Chern-Simons levels by explicitly going onto the Higgs branch and integrating out the Kaluza-Klein modes of the 6d fields on S^1_\beta S β 1 . We then discuss tensor branch flows, where an apparent mismatch between the formula in [1] and the free field answer requires an additional contribution from BPS strings. This ``missing contribution’’ is further sharpened by the relation between the fractional part of the Chern-Simons levels and the (mixed) global gravitational anomalies of the 6d SCFT. We also comment on the Cardy formula for 4d \mathcal{N}=2 𝒩 = 2 SCFTs in relation to Higgs branch and Coulomb branch flows.

Higher-group symmetries and weak gravity conjecture mixing

In four-dimensional axion electrodynamics, a Chern-Simons coupling of the form $θF$ Λ $F$ leads to a higher-group global symmetry between background gauge fields. At the same time, such a Chern-Simons coupling leads to a mixing between the Weak Gravity Conjectures for the axion and the gauge field, so that the charged excitations of a Weak Gravity Conjecture-satisfying axion string will also satisfy the Weak Gravity Conjecture for the gauge field. In this paper, we argue that these higher-group symmetries and this phenomenon of Weak Gravity Conjecture mixing are related to one another. We show that this relationship extends to supergravities in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 dimensions, so higher-dimensional supergravity is endowed with precisely the structure needed to ensure consistency with emergent higher-group symmetries and with the Weak Gravity Conjecture. We further argue that a similar mixing of Weak Gravity Conjectures can occur in two-term Chern-Simons theories or in theories with kinetic mixing, though the connection with higher-group symmetries here is more tenuous, and accordingly the constraints on effective field theory are not as sharp.

Rotons in anyon superfluids

We consider the problem of calculating the excitation spectrum of a gas of nonrelativistic anyons. When the anyons have statistics close to fermionic and the statistical angle has the form θ = π(1 - 1/k) where k is a large integer, the problem can be solved by employing the method of bosonization, which maps the problem to that of an infinite number of bosonic excitations coupled to a U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field. The spectrum consists of a Goldstone boson branch and a large number of massive branches, each having roton minima and maxima. The dispersion curves asymptote to the Landau levels at large momentum.

The inflated Chern-Simons number in spectator chromo-natural inflation

The chromo-natural inflation (CNI) scenario predicts a potentially detectable chiral gravitational wave signal, generated by a Chern-Simons coupling between a rolling scalar axion field and an SU(2) gauge field with an isotropy-preserving classical background during inflation. However, the generation of this signal requires a very large integer Chern-Simons level, which can be challenging to explain or embed in a UV-complete model. We show that this challenge persists in the phenomenologically viable spectator field CNI (S-CNI) model. Furthermore, we show that a clockwork scenario giving rise to a large integer as a product of small integers can never produce a Chern-Simons level large enough to have successful S-CNI phenomenology. We briefly discuss other constraints on the model, both in effective field theory based on partial-wave unitarity bounds and in quantum gravity based on the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which may be relevant for further explorations of alternative UV completions.

Anomalous hydrodynamics effective actions from holography

We derive an effective action for charged plasmas with an anomalous (abelian) global current charge current using holography. The holographic description is captured by the dynamics of an Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in an asymptotically AdS spacetime. The ’t Hooft anomaly contribution, which is encoded in the Chern-Simons term, contributes at the Gaussian order in the effective action only in the momentum diffusion sector, where it leads to chiral shear waves. However, as we demonstrate, beyond the Gaussian order, there is non-trivial imprint of the parity-violating anomaly term in sound and charge diffusion dynamics as well.

Dark Grand Unification in the axiverse: decaying axion dark matter and spontaneous baryogenesis

The quantum chromodynamics axion with a decay constant near the Grand Unification (GUT) scale has an ultralight mass near a neV. We show, however, that axion-like particles with masses near the keV–PeV range with GUT-scale decay constants are also well motivated in that they naturally arise from axiverse theories with dark c gauge groups. We demonstrate that the correct dark matter abundance may be achieved by the heavy axions in these models through the misalignment mechanism in combination with a period of early matter domination from the long-lived dark glueballs of the same gauge group. Heavy axion dark matter may decay to two photons, yielding mono-energetic electromagnetic signatures that may be detectable by current or next-generation space-based telescopes. We project the sensitivity of next-generation telescopes including Athena, AMEGO, and e-ASTROGAM to such decaying axion dark matter. If the dark sector contains multiple confining gauge groups, then the observed primordial baryon asymmetry may also be achieved in this scenario through spontaneous baryogenesis. We present explicit orbifold constructions where the dark gauge groups unify with the SM at the GUT scale and axions emerge as the fifth components of dark gauge fields with bulk Chern-Simons terms.
