Experimental and theoretical study of the plasma physics of antihydrogen generation and trapping. Final Scientific Report

The main goal of the project was to determine if matter and antimatter are exact conjugates. According to the current best understanding of the universe, this property should hold. The ALPHA collaboration performed a series of high precision measurements on trapped antihydrogen and compared the results to those that would be expected for hydrogen. Any difference would have enormous implications for our understanding of basic physics because a difference would mean the CPT theorem is violated. In pursuit of this goal, we needed to understand plasma and atomic processes for a novel set of plasma parameters: extremely low temperature (a few 10's of K) and high magnetic field (a couple T). Our attempts to control/manipulate these plasmas led to important goals related directly to plasma physics. For example, the radiative coupling of the cyclotron motion to a microwave cavity can display collective effects as the number of positrons increases. This DOE award mainly provided support for theoretical studies of the atomic and plasma processes that determine the outcome of the experiments.

Neutrino oscillation phenomenology in the standard model and beyond

Over the last 20 years measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters have become very precise. In the standard neutrino oscillation picture most of the parameters are measured at the percent level. In this thesis we study neutrino oscillations in the standard picture and beyond. We analyze data from all types of neutrino oscillation experiments to obtain a global picture of neutrino oscillations. The remaining unknowns in the standard picture are the value of the CP-violating phase $\delta$, the octant of the atmospheric angle $\theta_{23}$ and the neutrino mass ordering. We discuss the current status of these unknowns and also comment on how well future experiments will do in measuring these quantities, where we discuss new facilities which will observe accelerator, atmossperic and reactor neutrinos. Using oscillation data it is possible to bound a possible violation of the CPT symmetry in the neutrino sector. This is done by performing a fit to neutrino and antineutrino oscillation data separately. We also address the capability of the future experiment DUNE to this scenario. We show that DUNE could improve some of the current bounds considerably. We discuss the sensitivity of DUNE together with the next generation reactor neutrino experiment JUNO to measure quasi-Dirac neutrino oscillations. We find that the future experiments will be able to bound the important quantities, mostly unbounded by current data. Finally, we discuss atmospheric neutrinos at the next generation neutrino telescope ORCA. We show that ORCA will put the best bounds on the invisible neutrino decay of $\nu_3$, coming from neutrino oscillation experiments. We also find that, a scenario like this would not affect the standard measurements of ORCA, namely the determination of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters and the measurement of the neutrino mass ordering.

Theoretical Studies of Lorentz and CPT Symmetry

The fundamental symmetries studied here are Lorentz and CPT invariance, which form a cornerstone of the relativistic quantum theories used in modern descriptions of nature. The results obtained during the reporting period focus on the idea, originally suggested by the P.I. and his group in the late 1980s, that observable CPT and Lorentz violation in nature might emerge from the qualitatively new physics expected to hold at the Planck scale. What follows is a summary of results obtained during the period of this grant.

Quark-sector Lorentz violation in Z-boson production

Quark-sector Lorentz violation is studied in the context of Drell-Yan dilepton production including effects from Z -boson exchange. We show the chiral nature of the weak interactions enables parity-violating and spin-dependent effects to be studied using unpolarized initial states. Constraints are placed on dimensionless and CPT-even coefficients for Lorentz violation for the first two generations of quarks using measurements from the Large Hadron Collider.

Tests of Lorentz and CPT Invariance in Space

I give a brief overview of recent work concerning possible signals of Lorentz violation in sensitive clock-based experiments in space. The systems under consideration include atomic clocks and electromagnetic resonators of the type planned for flight on the International Space Station.

Leptogenesis from spontaneous symmetry breaking during inflation

Symmetry breaking in the Higgs field via a non-minimal coupling to gravity or higher-dimensional interactions with the inflaton can lead to condensation at a large vacuum expectation value (VEV) during inflation. After inflation is over, the Higgs field must relax to the minimum of its effective potential, creating an era in which the CPT is effectively broken by the time-depended VEV. We show that the matter-antimatter asymmetry can be generated during this relaxation epoch.
