Measuring the Loschmidt Amplitude for Finite-Energy Properties of the Fermi-Hubbard Model on an Ion-Trap Quantum Computer

Calculating the equilibrium properties of condensed-matter systems is one of the promising applications of near-term quantum computing. Recently, hybrid quantum-classical time-series algorithms have been proposed to efficiently extract these properties from a measurement of the Loschmidt amplitude ⟨ ψ | e − i H ^ t | ψ ⟩ from initial states | ψ ⟩ and a time evolution under the Hamiltonian H ^ up to short times t . In this work, we study the operation of this algorithm on a present-day quantum computer. Specifically, we measure the Loschmidt amplitude for the Fermi-Hubbard model on a 16 -site ladder geometry (32 orbitals) on the Quantinuum H2-1 trapped-ion device. We assess the effect of noise on the Loschmidt amplitude and implement algorithm-specific error-mitigation techniques. By using a thus-motivated error model, we numerically analyze the influence of noise on the full operation of the quantum-classical algorithm by measuring expectation values of local observables at finite energies. Finally, we estimate the resources needed for scaling up the algorithm. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Computer programs calculate potential and charge distributions in a plasma

Computer program determines the potential and charge distributions between two electrodes in a plasma. Solutions of the Vlasov equations for plane, cylindrical, and spherical geometries are determined and density distributions are found for each of these configurations over a range of conditions.

Statistical parameters of reverberating fields, calculated by computer

A method, developed for making measurements in reverberation chambers in the steady state mode, is reported. Spatial distribution patterns of the square of the sound pressure vs type of exciting signal were produced theoretically and checked experimentally in a reverberation chamber. Results of measurements of spatial irregularities of the field with pure tones and with noise bands in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range were used for calculating statistical parameters of the reverbation fields by computer. The calculation program included determination of density probability function, integral distribution pattern, mathematical expectation, normalized dispersion of the mean square of the pressure.

Harnessing the power of ab initio calculations, distributed computing and machine learning to efficiently locate extreme molecules for use in carbon-based solar cells (Final Technical Report)

The use of high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) tools is a powerful tool to expedite the materials discovery of commercially relevant materials. In previous years, our group has developed a molecular discovery platform to generate libraries in order to obtain suitable candidates for different applications, starting from the Harvard Clean Energy Project. This platform is suitable to test in-silico on traditional supercomputing clusters and shared resources, for example, in the IBM World Community Grid. In this project, we used the molecular discovery platform to create and screen a library of candidates of organic photovoltaic (OPVs) molecules. Based on a set of candidates created with combinations of molecular moieties, we were able to filter, by conformation stability, the energy of electronic orbitals and approximated power conversion efficiencies (PCE). To improve the predictions of orbital energies calculated and the PCEs, we used Gaussian Process regression and two sets of molecules. These sets correspond to electronic structure calculations of a higher level of theory and experimental PCE values, respectively. Finally, we selected a subset of the best candidates (molecules with a PCE higher than 10%) to understand its absorbance properties with TD-DFT. This project has demonstrated the capabilities of our molecular discovery platform for HTVS. Finally, machine learning can help us to introduce more complex effects included in bulk conditions and computational intensive calculations on models.

Method of Characteristics Calculations and Computer Code for Materials with Arbitrary Equations of State and Using Orthogonal Polynomial Least Square Surface Fits

A numerical scheme using the method of characteristics to calculate the flow properties and pressures behind decaying shock waves for materials under hypervelocity impact is developed. Time-consuming double interpolation subroutines are replaced by a technique based on orthogonal polynomial least square surface fits. Typical calculated results are given and compared with the double interpolation results. The complete computer program is included.

Failure detection and isolation investigation for strapdown skew redundant tetrad laser gyro inertial sensor arrays

The degree to which flight-critical failures in a strapdown laser gyro tetrad sensor assembly can be isolated in short-haul aircraft after a failure occurrence has been detected by the skewed sensor failure-detection voting logic is investigated along with the degree to which a failure in the tetrad computer can be detected and isolated at the computer level, assuming a dual-redundant computer configuration. The tetrad system was mechanized with two two-axis inertial navigation channels (INCs), each containing two gyro/accelerometer axes, computer, control circuitry, and input/output circuitry. Gyro/accelerometer data is crossfed between the two INCs to enable each computer to independently perform the navigation task. Computer calculations are synchronized between the computers so that calculated quantities are identical and may be compared. Fail-safe performance (identification of the first failure) is accomplished with a probability approaching 100 percent of the time, while fail-operational performance (identification and isolation of the first failure) is achieved 93 to 96 percent of the time.
