On the electron affinity of Be2

Calculations of the electron affinity (EA) of Be2 using a large Slater-type orbital basis set and extensive correlation based upon a CASSCF reference are reported. The adiabatic EAs are estimated to be 0.44 eV for the 2Sigma sub g(+) state and 0.56 eV for the 2Pi sub u state. The extra electron attaches into an empty bonding orbital, causing a shortening of the bond length and an increase in omega(e). The D(e) of the 2Pi sub u state of Be2 is six times as large as the D(e) of Be2.

On the low-lying states of TiC

The ground and low-lying excited states of TiC are investigated using a CASSCF-externally contracted CI approach. The calculations yield a 3Sigma(+) ground state, but the 1Sigma(+) state is only 780/cm higher and cannot be ruled out. The low-lying states have some triple bond character. The nature of the bonding and origin of the states are discussed.

Theoretical calculation of ozone vibrational infrared intensities

An ab initio dipole moment function for ozone has been computed using the CASSCF (complete active space self-consistent field) method, and forms the basis for a calculation of ozone infrared band intensities. Vibrational wave functions were generated using the variational method with potential energy surfaces derived from experimental force constants. Computed values of the permanent dipole moment, dipole moment derivatives, and infrared band strengths are all found to be in remarkably good agreement with experiment. Intensities are predicted for hot bands for which experimental values are unavailable, and implications for atmospheric ozone spectroscopy are discussed. As the dipole moment matrix element signs are now established for nearly all of the observed bands, further refinement of the dipole moment function is possible.

Theoretical research program to study chemical reactions in AOTV bow shock tubes

Progress in the development of computational methods for the characterization of chemical reactions in aerobraking orbit transfer vehicle (AOTV) propulsive flows is reported. Two main areas of code development were undertaken: (1) the implementation of CASSCF (complete active space self-consistent field) and SCF (self-consistent field) analytical first derivatives on the CRAY X-MP; and (2) the installation of the complete set of electronic structure codes on the CRAY 2. In the area of application calculations the main effort was devoted to performing full configuration-interaction calculations and using these results to benchmark other methods. Preprints describing some of the systems studied are included.

Benchmark full configuration-interaction calculations on HF and NH2

Full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations are performed at selected geometries for the 1-sigma(+) state of HF and the 2-B(1) and 2-A(1) states of NH2 using both DZ and DZP gaussian basis sets. Higher excitations become more important when the bonds are stretched and the self-consistent field (SCF) reference becomes a poorer zeroth-order description of the wave function. The complete active space SCF - multireference configuration-interaction (CASSCF-MRCI) procedure gives excellent agreement with the FCI potentials, especially when corrected with a multi-reference analog of the Davidson correction.

The nature of the bonding in XCO for X = Fe, Ni, and Cu

The bonding in the (5,3)Sigma - and 3Delta states of FeCO, the (3,1)Sigma + , 3Delta, and 3Pi states of NiCO, and the 2Sigma + state of CuCO are analyzed using the constrained-space orbital-variation (CSOV) technique for both (CASSCF) and SCF wave functions. The bonding is discussed in terms of sigma repulsion between the metals 4s and the CO 5-sigma and CO-to-metal sigma donation when there is an empty or partly occupied d-sigma orbital and metal-to-CO 2pi(asterisk) backdonation. The bonding is compared for the different metals and between the different states.

Theoretical study of the electric dipole moment function of the ClO molecule

The potential energy function and electric dipole moment function (EDMF) are computed for ClO X 2Pi using several different techniques to include electron correlation. The EDMF is used to compute Einstein coefficients, vibrational lifetimes, and dipole moments in higher vibrational levels. The band strength of the 1-0 fundamental transition is computed to be 12 + or - 2 per sq cm atm determined from infrared heterodyne spectroscopy. The theoretical methods used include SCF, CASSCF, multireference singles plus doubles configuration interaction (MRCI) and contracted CI, coupled pair functional (CPF), and a modified version of the CPF method. The results obtained using the different methods are critically compared.

Theoretical dipole moments for the first-row transition metal hydrides

Spectroscopic parameters (D sub e, r sub e, mu) are determined for the first-row transition metal hydrides using better than DZP basis sets at the modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) level. Extensive comparisons between MCPF and complete-active space self-consistent field (CASSCF)/MRCI calculations with natural orbital iterations, and studies with more extensive basis sets, show this level of treatment to supply an accurate and cost-effective treatment of these systems. For the transition metal hydrides, the bonding can arise from either the 3d(n)4s(2) or 3d(n + 1)4s(1) atomic asymptotes, or a mixture of both. Since the dipole moment arising from these two bonding mechanisms is very different, the dipole moment is found to be directly related to the 3d population. Thus, the magnitude of the dipole moments provides a sensitive test of the wave function, and gives insight into the nature of the bonding.

Full CI benchmark calculations on N2, NO, and O2 - A comparison of methods for describing multiple bonds

Full configuration interaction (CI) calculations on the ground states of N2, NO, and O2 using a DZP Gaussian basis are compared with single-reference SDCI and coupled pair approaches (CPF), as well as with CASSCF multireference CI approaches. The CASSCF/MRCI technique is found to describe multiple bonds as well as single bonds. Although the coupled pair functional approach gave chemical accuracy (1 kcal/mol) for bonds involving hydrogen, larger errors occur in the CPF approach for the multiple bonded systems considered here. CI studies on the 1Sigma(g +) state of N2, including all single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations show that triple excitations are very important for the multiple bond case, and accounts for most of the deficiency in the coupled pair functional methods.

Extended active space CASSCF/MRSD CI calculations of the barrier height for the reaction O + H2 yields OH + H

The convergence of the barrier height for the O + H2 yields OH + H reaction is studied as a function of the size of the active space in the CASSCF calculation and the size of the basis set. The basis set employed in this study is described. The sources of the differences between the POL-CI and MRSD-CI calculations for barrier height are examined. It is observed that the barrier height is rapidly convergent with respect to the expansion of the active space. The effects of adding active orbitals on the barrier height are investigated. The barrier height estimated from corrected MRSD-CI data is 12.4 kcal/mol.

Effective core potential parameters for first- and second-row atoms

An improved effective core potential (ECP) technique is described and used to give ECP parameters for the atoms of the first two rows of the periodic table. A given basis set is parametrized which allows for a direct comparison with all-electron calculations. Extensive test calculations on first- and second-row molecules using the ECP have been performed, giving excellent agreement with the all-electron results at the SCF, CASSCF, and CI levels of treatment. Correlating and diffuse functions may be added without modifying the ECP parameters. The present ECP descriptions result in CPU time reductions of the order of 50 percent in addition to reduced disk storage.

An initio calculations on C2, Si2, and SiC

Full-configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations have been performed for the Z 1Sigma(g)(+), a 3Pi(u), and b 3Sigma(g)(-) states of C2 and the X 3Sigma(g)(-) and A 3Pi(u) states of Si2 in valence double-zeta plus polarization one-particle basis sets. By carrying out the CASSCF multireference singles plus doubles CI (MRCI) procedure in a very large Gaussian basis set and correcting for errors with the FCI, the triplet-triplet separation in C2 is reproduced to within 47/cm. Analogous calculations on Si2 definitively determine the ground state to be 3Sigma(g)(-); the 3Pi(u) state is only 440 + or - 100/cm higher in energy. For the SiC molecule, which has never been observed spectroscopically but is believed to be an important component in carbon stars and to be present in interstellar space, the A 3Sigma(-) state is nearly 4000/cm above the X 3Pi ground state.

Theoretical study of the scandium and yttrium halides

The X1Sigma(+) ground states and a3Delta excited states of the diatomic halides of Sc and Y are characterized theoretically, using the SDCI coupled-pair functional method and the state-averaged CASSCF method to determine the spectroscopic constants and related properties. The techniques employed are discussed, and the results are presented in extensive tables. The dissociation energies are given as D0 = 6.00 eV for ScF, 4.55 eV for ScCl, 3.90 eV for ScBr, 6.72 eV for YF, 5.36 eV for YCl, and 4.74 eV for YBr.

The computed spectrum of AlC

The low-lying (up to about 40,000/cm) doublet and quartet states of AlC have been studied at the CASSCF and MRCI levels of theory. The bonding in the X4Sigma(-) state is shown to involve three one-electron bonds. The first excited state, a 2Pi, lies about 8700/cm higher and like the X4Sigma(-) state is derived from ground state Al and C, but has a two-electron pi bond leading to a much shorter bond length.

Theoretical characterization of the minimum energy path for hydrogen atom addition to N2 - Implications for the unimolecular lifetime of HN2

Results are reported from CASSCF externally contracted CI ab initio computations of the minimum-energy path for the addition of H to N2. The theoretical basis and numerical implementation of the computations are outlined, and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs and characterized in detail. The zero-point-corrected barrier for HN2 dissociation is estimated as 8.5 kcal/mol, and the lifetime of the lowest-lying quasi-bound vibrational state of HN2 is found to be between 88 psec and 5.8 nsec (making experimental observation of this species very difficult).

Theoretical study of the far-infrared A 3Sigma(-)g - X 3Pi(u) transition in Al2

The transition between the X 3Pi(u) ground state of Al2 and the first excited state A 3Sigma(-)g is investigated theoretically by means of CASSCF computations. The Einstein coefficients are determined on the basis of the potentials published by Bauschlicher et al. (1989) and listed in a table. The problems involved in devising an experiment to verify the theoretical results are briefly considered.

Theoretical characterization of the potential energy surface for H + O2 yields HO2(asterisk) yields HO + O. II - The potential for H atom exchange in HO2

The results of CASSCF multireference contracted CI calculations with large ANO basis sets are presented for the exchange region of the HO2 potential-energy surface. The saddle point for H atom exchange is about 13 kcal/mol below the energy of H + O2; therefore, this region of the surface should be accessible during H + O2 recombination and methathesis reactions.
