Direct Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 to C 2+ Chemicals: Catalysts, Microenvironments, and Mechanistic Understanding

The electrochemical reduction reaction of CO 2 (eCO 2 RR) to chemicals presents a viable solution for addressing climate change and sustainable manufacturing. In this Review, we describe the recent advancements in eCO 2 RR for multicarbon (C 2+ ) chemicals production from the aspects of catalyst structure, reaction microenvironments, and mechanistic understanding. Here, we draw experimental and theoretical comparisons between the catalyst systems containing bulk and highly dispersed metals, alloys, and metal compounds and recount new results of microenvironmental impacts as well as the catalytic mechanism. From our own recent studies, we offer some viewpoints on the electrocatalytic mechanism during complex multistep proton-coupled electron transfers and propose several research directions in unlocking the full potential of eCO 2 RR as a scalable industrial solution for CO 2 -to-C 2+ conversion.

Delivering Robust Proton-Only Sensing of Hyperpolarized [1,2- 13 C 2 ]-Pyruvate Using Broad-Spectral-Range Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Pulse Sequences

Hyperpolarized [1- 13 C]pyruvate is the leading hyperpolarized injectable contrast agent and is currently under evaluation in clinical trials for molecular imaging of metabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. One aspect limiting broad scalability of the technique is that hyperpolarized 13 C MRI requires specialized 13 C hardware and software that are not generally available on clinical MRI scanners, which employ proton-only detection. Here, we present an approach that uses pulse sequences to transfer 13 C hyperpolarization to methyl protons for detection of the 13 C– 13 C pyruvate singlet, employing proton-only excitation and detection only. The new pulse sequences are robust to the B 1 and B 0 magnetic field inhomogeneities. The work focuses on singlet-to-magnetization (S2M) and rotor-synchronized (R) pulses, both relying on trains of hard pulses with broad spectral width coverage designed to effectively transform hyperpolarized 13 C 2 -singlet hyperpolarization to 1 H polarization on the CH 3 group of [1,2- 13 C 2 ]pyruvate. Finally, this approach may enable a broader adoption of hyperpolarized MRI as a molecular imaging technique.

Xcel Energy’s electric carbon emissions reduction trajectories in the context of 1.5°C and 2°C warming pathways

In 2015 the Paris Agreement established the goals of limiting global average warming to well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit warming to below 1.5°C. A large and growing number of scenarios have been developed by the climate research community that explore global energy and emissions pathways that would achieve those goals. We draw on the most recent database of such scenarios to update a previous analysis of Xcel Energy’s emissions reduction goals in light of evolving climate science. We assess the outlook for the role of the US electricity sector in current economy-wide and global emissions pathways and compare it to Xcel Energy’s near-term resource plans to 2030. We find that global scenarios that achieve the 1.5°C goal span a range of US/North America electricity sector emissions reductions by 2030 of about 65-85%. Xcel Energy’s emissions reductions to date have exceeded those of the US electricity sector as a whole, and its projected trajectory to 2030 under current approved resource plans falls within this range. Scenarios achieving the 2°C goal have a wider range of reductions (about 40-85%). In scenarios achieving either goal, electricity sector emissions fall faster than economy-wide emissions, a robust feature of mitigation scenarios, which typically rely on low carbon electricity to achieve climate targets.

Trade-offs in land-based carbon removal measures under 1.5 °C and 2 °C futures

Land-based carbon removals, specifically afforestation/reforestation and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), vary widely in 1.5 °C and 2 °C scenarios generated by integrated assessment models. Because underlying drivers are difficult to assess, we use a well-known integrated assessment model, GCAM, to demonstrate that land-based carbon removals are sensitive to the strength and scope of land-based mitigation policies. We find that while cumulative afforestation/reforestation and BECCS deployment are inversely related, they are both typically part of cost-effective mitigation pathways, with forestry options deployed earlier. While the CO 2 removal intensity (removal per unit land) of BECCS is typically higher than afforestation/reforestation over long time horizons, the BECCS removal intensity is sensitive to feedstock and technology choices whereas the afforestation/reforestation removal intensity is sensitive to land policy choices. Finally, we find a generally positive relationship between agricultural prices and removal effectiveness of land-based mitigation, suggesting that some trade-offs may be difficult to avoid.

Dithieno[3,2-c:3′,2′‑ h ][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9(5H,10H)-dione-Based Conjugated Polymers for High Stable n‑Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Amide/imide-based conjugated polymers have been utilized as n-type OECT materials and have demonstrated promising device performance. However, their performance remains insufficient in terms of both efficiency and stability, which limits their practical applications. The development of conjugated polymers based on amide and imide groups represents a promising approach to address this issue. Here, in this study, we introduced dithieno[3,2-c:3′,2′-h][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9(5H,10H)-dione (TVTDA) into the design of the OECT materials for the first time. By copolymerizing it with (E)-2,2′-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(thiophene-3-carbonitrile), we prepared two polymers, TVTDA-2CNTVT-ST and TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR, which contain linear or branched ethylene glycol side chains, respectively. OECT devices based on these polymers demonstrate n-type charge transport characteristics, achieving promising μC* values of 7.17 and 26.5 F cm –1 V –1 s –1 for TVTDA-2CNTVT-ST and TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR, respectively. The higher electron mobility and μC* of TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR can be attributed to its mixed edge-on and face-on stacking mode, larger crystalline coherence length, and larger domain size in the thin film. To our delight, the OECT devices based on both polymers exhibit good operational stability after operating in an aqueous solution for 2000 s, with current retention rates exceeding 93%, representing the high level among the OECT devices based on amide/imide-conjugated polymers. Our study demonstrates that the TVTDA unit holds great potential for constructing high-performance n-type OECT materials.

Updated measurements of the M1 transition ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) with η c ( 2 S ) → K K ¯ π

Based on a data sample of ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the M1 transition ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) with η c ( 2 S ) → K K ¯ π is studied, where K K ¯ π is K + K − π 0 or K S 0 K ± π ∓ . The mass and width of the η c ( 2 S ) are measured to be ( 3637.8 ± 0.8 ( stat ) ± 0.2 ( syst ) ) MeV / c 2 and ( 10.5 ± 1.7 ( stat ) ± 3.5 ( syst ) ) MeV , respectively. The product branching fraction B ( ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) ) × B ( η c ( 2 S ) → K K ¯ π ) is determined to be ( 0.97 ± 0.06 ( stat ) ± 0.09 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 5 . Using B ( η c ( 2 S ) → K K ¯ π ) = ( 1.8 6 − 0.49 + 0.68 ) % , we obtain the branching fraction of the radiative transition to be B ( ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) ) = ( 5.2 ± 0.3 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) − 1.4 + 1.9 ( extr ) ) × 10 − 4 , where the third uncertainty is due to the quoted B ( η c ( 2 S ) → K K ¯ π ) . High-performance of CrOx/HZSM-5 catalyst on non-oxidative dehydrogenation of C 2 H 6 to C 2 H 4 : Effect of supporting materials and associated mechanism

Ethane (C 2 H 6 ) is an important inexpensive and widely available fuel resource. High-value use of C 2 H 6 has become increasingly important. Catalytic dehydrogenation of C 2 H 6 to ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) has attracted much attention in recent years due to its high energy efficiency. The direct non-oxidative ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) to ethylene is a promising strategy to produce ethylene and hydrogen at the same time. In this research, Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst with superior stability was synthesized and exhibited an C 2 H 6 converting activity of 1.47 µmol/(g·s) with the corresponding C 2 H 6 conversion and C 2 H 4 selectivity of 37.3% and 90%, respectively. Herein, the synergistic effects of Si and Al in supporting materials were investigated by comparing Cr/HZSM-5 with SBA-15, SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 supported ones, which contains either Al or Si with different structures. Characterization results indicated that the intimate interactions between Cr and support significantly improved the catalytic performance. The presence of Al in the support promoted the formation of more active Cr 6+ species by forming the aluminum-chromium-chromate (Cr-O-Al) structures which were more efficient to active C-H bond and form (Cr, Al)-OH groups during the reaction. Meanwhile, the formation of internal silanol group with the dissociative adsorbed H* could stabilized the active Cr phase to achieve a stable dehydrogenation activity.

Spin dynamics of [1,2- 13 C 2 ]pyruvate hyperpolarization by parahydrogen in reversible exchange at micro Tesla fields

Hyperpolarization of 13 C-pyruvate via Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) is an important recent discovery because of both the relative simplicity of hyperpolarization and the central biological relevance of pyruvate as a biomolecular probe for in vitro or in vivo studies. Here, we analyze the [1,2- 13 C 2 ]pyruvate-SABRE spin system and its field dependence theoretically and experimentally. We provide first-principles analysis of the governing 4-spin dihydride- 13 C 2 Hamiltonian and numerical spin dynamics simulations of the 7-spin dihydride- 13 C 2 –CH 3 system. Furthermore, the analytical and the numerical results are compared to matching systematic experiments. With these methods we unravel the observed spin state mixing of singlet states and triplet states at microTesla fields and we also analyze the dynamics during transfer from micro-Tesla field to high field for detection to understand the resulting spectra from the [1,2- 13 C 2 ]pyruvate-SABRE system.

p(2 x 2) and c(2 x 2) coverages of Cl and F on Ni(100), a comparison with O and S on Ni(100)

The rigid lattice adsorbate vibrational frequency normal to the surface, omega(e,r) and height above the surface, R(transverse), are computed for p(2 x 2) (0.25 ML) and c(2 x 2) (0.5 ML) coverages of Cl and F. These calculations show a small change in omega(e,r) and a small increase in R(transverse) with increased coverage. The bonding of Cl and F is compared to that found for O and S, both of which show a decrease in R(transverse) and O which shows a larger shift in omega(e,r).

Enhanced Selectivity for C 2 H 4 Production from C 2 H 6 on Partially Chlorinated IrO 2 (110) Surfaces

Modifying metal oxide surfaces to limit their oxidizing activity can provide a means of improving catalytic selectivity toward the partial oxidation of light alkanes. Here, in this study, we investigated the oxidation of C 2 H 6 on Cl-modified IrO 2 (110) surfaces using temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS) and first-principles microkinetic modeling. We find that substituting Cl for O in the IrO 2 (110) surface enhances the selectivity for C 2 H 6 conversion to C 2 H 4 during TPRS by suppressing extensive oxidation to CO x products, while also either enhancing C 2 H 4 production or altering it to a lesser extent, depending on the initial C 2 H 6 coverage. The C 2 H 4 selectivity increased with increasing C 2 H 6 and Cl coverage, but reached a limiting value below 50%. The Cl coverage changed negligibly during C 2 H 6 oxidation, and the surface reactivity decreased only marginally for Cl coverages up to 0.5 ML (monolayer). TPRS simulations using a microkinetic model predict C 2 H 4 and CO x product yields as a function of the Cl coverage that agree closely with the experimental results. According to the simulations, C 2 H 6 conversion to C 2 H 4 occurs on Cl-IrO 2 (110) by the hydrogenation of C 2 H 3 * species adsorbed in blocked states, in which neighboring sites are occupied only by unreactive HO and Cl species. The microkinetic modeling shows that H-hopping away from surface HO groups provides a relatively efficient route for C 2 H 3 * to escape blocked configurations and dehydrogenate, and that this process can limit the C 2 H 4 selectivity on Cl-IrO 2 (110) under the conditions studied. Overall, our results demonstrate that Cl-substitution into IrO 2 (110) enhances the selectivity for C 2 H 4 production from C 2 H 6 and provides insights into the reaction mechanism that can guide strategies to further improve the C 2 H 4 selectivity.

Precise Pore Engineering of fcu–Type Y–MOFs for One–Step C 2 H 4 Purification from Ternary C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 Mixtures

The purification of C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 mixtures is of great significance in the chemical industry for C 2 H 4 production but remains a daunting task. Guided by powerful reticular chemistry principles, herein a systematic study is carried out to engineer pore dimensions and pore functionality of fcu-type Y-based metal–organic frameworks (Y-MOFs) through the construction of a series of eight new structures using linear dicarboxylate linkers with different length and functional groups. This study illustrates how delicate changes in pore size and pore surface chemistry can effectively influence the adsorption preference of C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 by the MOFs. Importantly, clear relations between pore size/pore surface polarity and C 2 adsorption selectivities of this series of MOFs are established. In particular, HIAM-326 built on a linker decorated with trifluoromethoxy group shows notably preferential adsorption of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 over C 2 H 4 , with balanced C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivities. Furthermore, this endows the compound with the capability of one-step purification of C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 ternary mixtures, which is validated by breakthrough measurements where high purity C 2 H 4 (99.9%+) can be obtained directly from the separation column. Its adsorption thermodynamics and underlying selective adsorption mechanisms are further revealed by ab initio calculations.

Enhancing Charge Storage of Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 MXene by Partial Oxidation

Abstract Driving the pseudocapacitive redox intercalation in 2DMXenes with neutral electrolytes is important for safer, more sustainable, and improved electrochemical charge storage. Single transition metal MXenes, such as Ti 3 C 2 , have shown great promise for energy storage, owing to their high conductivity and redox activity. Mixed metallic MXenes, such as out‐of‐plane ordered Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 , have remained underexplored in energy storage because of the absence of redox activity in most of the electrolytes. Simultaneous structural modifications and instigating intercalation pseudocapacitance in neutral electrolytes could be a viable strategy for enhancing their electrochemical properties. Herein, a facile synthesis of partially oxidized Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 MXene (PO‐Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 ) exhibiting improved charge storage capability is demonstrated. Optical, structural, and spectroscopic analyses indicate the formation of oxide nanostructures upon thermal oxidation of Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 . This leads to an enhanced energy storage capability with remarkably improved cyclability as well as a high Coulombic efficiency in a neutral LiCl electrolyte. This work highlights the importance of structural modifications of MXenes to enhance their charge storage and shows the promise of less explored double transition metal MXenes in energy storage.

Planar defect-driven electrocatalysis of CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion

The selectivity towards a specific C 2+ product, such as ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), is sensitive to the surface structure of copper (Cu) catalysts in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) electro-reduction. The fundamental understanding of such sensitivity can guide the development of advanced electrocatalysts, although it remains challenging at the atomic level. In this work, we demonstrated that planar defects, such as stacking faults, could drive the electrocatalysis of CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion with higher selectivity and productivity than Cu(100) facets in the intermediate potential region (–0.50 ~ –0.65 V vs. RHE). The unique right bipyramidal Cu nanocrystals containing a combination of (100) facets and a set of parallel planar defects delivered 67% faradaic efficiency (FE) for C 2 H 4 and a partial current density of 217 mA cm –2 at –0.63 V vs. RHE. In contrast, Cu nanocubes with exclusive (100) facets exhibited only 46% FE for C 2 H 4 and a partial current density of 87 mA cm –2 at an identical potential. Both ex situ CO temperature-programmed desorption and in situ Raman spectroscopy analysis implied that the stronger *CO adsorption on planar defect sites facilitates CO generation kinetics, which contributes to a higher surface coverage of *CO and in turn an enhanced reaction rate of C–C coupling towards C 2+ products, especially C 2 H 4 .

A SIFT ion-molecule study of some reactions in Titan's atmosphere. reactions of N(+), N(2)(+), and HCN(+) with CH(4), C(2)H(2), and C(2)H(4)

The results of a study of the ion-molecule reactions of N(+), N(2)(+), and HCN(+) with methane, acetylene, and ethylene are reported. These studies were performed using the FA-SIFT at the University of Canterbury. The reactions studied here are important to understanding the ion chemistry in Titan's atmosphere. N(+) and N(2)(+) are the primary ions formed by photo-ionization and electron impact in Titan's ionosphere and drive Titan's ion chemistry. It is therefore very important to know how these ions react with the principal trace neutral species in Titan's atmosphere: Methane, acetylene, and ethylene. While these reactions have been studied before the product channels have been difficult to define as several potential isobaric products make a definitive answer difficult. Mass overlap causes difficulties in making unambiguous species assignments in these systems. Two discriminators have been used in this study to resolve the mass overlap problem. They are deuterium labeling and also the differences in reactivities of each isobar with various neutral reactants. Several differences have been found from the products in previous work. The HCN(+) ion is important in both Titan's atmosphere and in the laboratory.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .
