Effect of charge polarization on inelastic scattering - Differential and integral cross sections for excitation of the 2/super 1/S state of helium by electron impact.

Experimental differential scattering cross sections for excitation of helium by electron impact from its ground state to its 2(super 1)S state are presented at four incident electron energies in the range from 26 to 55.5 eV for scattering angles between 10 and 70 deg and at 81.6 eV for scattering angles between 10 and 80 deg. These cross sections are normalized and compared with results predicted by the Born approximation, the polarized Born approximation, and several other first-order approximations in which direct excitation is calculated in the Born approximation and exchange scattering in various Ochkur-like approximations.

Electronic structure and optical properties of quantum crystals from first principles calculations in the Born–Oppenheimer approximation

In this work, we develop a formalism to accurately account for the renormalization of the electronic structure due to quantum and thermal nuclear motions within the Born–Oppenheimer approximation. We focus on the fundamental energy gap obtained from electronic addition and removal energies from quantum Monte Carlo calculations in either the canonical or grand-canonical ensembles. The formalism applies as well to effective single electron theories such as those based on density functional theory. We show that the electronic (Bloch) crystal momentum can be restored by marginalizing the total electron–ion wave function with respect to the nuclear equilibrium distribution, and we describe an explicit procedure to establish the band structure of electronic excitations for quantum crystals within the Born–Oppenheimer approximation. Based on the Kubo–Greenwood equation, we discuss the effects of nuclear motion on optical conductivity. Our methodology applies to the low temperature regime where nuclear motion is quantized and, in general, differs from the semi-classical approximation. We apply our method to study the electronic structure of C2/c-24 crystalline hydrogen at 200 K and 250 GPa and discuss the optical absorption profile of hydrogen crystals at 200 K and carbon diamond at 297 K.

Three-dimensional imaging using coherent x rays at grazing incidence geometry

We have developed a three-dimensional coherent diffraction imaging algorithm to retrieve phases of diffraction patterns of samples in grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering experiments. The algorithm interprets the diffraction patterns using the distorted-wave Born approximation instead of the Born approximation, as in this case, the existence of a reflected beam from the substrate causes the diffraction pattern to deviate significantly from the simple Fourier transform of the object. Detailed computer simulations show that the algorithm works. Verification with real experiments is planned.

Photon scattering by a 4π -spherically-focused ultrastrong electromagnetic wave

The scattering of high-power probe laser pulses by tightly focused ultrastrong laser pulses has been investigated through a semiclassical approach using a perturbative method based on the Born approximation. Under a 4π-spherically-focused ultrastrong light field, the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability tensors for vacuum are calculated from the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian to show the nonlinear birefringent property of vacuum. And, from permittivity and permeability tensors, the scattering potential is derived for the Born approximation. The first-order solution of the Born approximation is taken as an electric field scattered from the 4π-spherically-focused laser pulse when a probe laser pulse propagates through the focused laser field. The differential cross section of the nonlinear birefringent vacuum is derived, and the number of photons scattered from the nonlinear birefringent vacuum is analyzed in the laser power range of 10-1000 PW.

Long-Range Interaction between Molecules with Electronic Degeneracy: Beyond the Born–Oppenheimer Approximation

Long-range intermolecular interaction plays an essential role in (ultra)cold collisions. For monomers with degenerate electronic states, an accurate description of the long-range interaction can be challenging due to the potential breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation. In this work, we developed a general method to construct long-range interaction potential energy surfaces (IPESs) between arbitrary molecules using the degenerate perturbation theory of Schrödinger. To further simplify the application of this method, a group-theoretical method is introduced to identify nonzero components of electrostatic properties of monomers, especially for the nonlinear molecules. To demonstrate this approach, we report the long-range IPESs of the O( 3 P)–OH( 2 Π) and OH( 2 Π)–OH( 2 Π) systems. The excellent agreement with ab initio calculations in large separations, even near electronic degeneracies, confirms the accuracy of our approach. The method is expected to lay the groundwork for the accurate investigation of (ultra)cold collisional dynamics involving open-shell species.

Real-Time Time-Dependent Nuclear–Electronic Orbital Approach: Dynamics beyond the Born–Oppenheimer Approximation

The quantum mechanical treatment of both electrons and nuclei is crucial in nona- diabatic dynamical processes such as proton-coupled electron transfer. The nuclear electronic orbital (NEO) method provides an elegant framework for including nuclear quantum effects beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. To enable the study of nonequilibrium properties, we derive and implement a real-time NEO (RT-NEO) approach based on time-dependent Hatree-Fock or density functional theory, in which both the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom are propagated in a time-dependent variational framework. Nuclear and electronic spectral features can be resolved from the time-dependent dipole moment computed using the RT-NEO method. The test cases demonstrate the dynamical interplay between the quantum nuclei and the electrons through vibronic coupling. Moreover, vibrational excitation in the RT-NEO approach is demonstrated by applying a resonant driving eld, and electronic excitation is demonstrated by simulating excited state intramolecular proton transfer. This work shows that the RT-NEO approach is a promising tool to study nonadiabatic quantum dynamical processes within a time-dependent variational description for the coupled electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom.

Heavy-quark spin symmetry breaking in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

Heavy-quark spin symmetry is explicitly broken by the mass splitting between a heavy-light pseudoscalar meson and its vector partner. This fact plays a pivotal role in the physics of states whose mass lies close to the threshold of an open-flavor meson pair, like X (3872). We show that this source of heavy-quark spin symmetry breaking can be systematically included within the diabatic representation of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We verify that including all the appropriate coupled channels guarantees conservation of total angular momentum, parity, and charge-conjugation parity. This marks a fundamental step towards a unified, first-principles study of quarkonia and meson molecules with hidden flavor.

Deriving Effective Coupling Strength with Born-Oppenheimer Approximation

The development of high-fidelity quantum gates is paramount to the scalability of quantum processors. Tunable couplers have played a key role in the realization of these low error rate quantum gates in superconducting circuits. However, the derivation of the effective coupling strength between the qubits is usually enabled by a Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, which is complex and requires prior-knowledge of the proper generator for the transformation. We propose a simpler method of obtaining this effective coupling using an approach similar to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

Low-energy Scattering of Positronium by Atoms

The survey reports theoretical studies involving positronium (Ps) - atom scattering. Investigations carried out in last few decades have been briefly reviewed in this article. A brief description of close-coupling approximation (CCA), the first-Born approximation (FBA) and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA) for Ps-Atom systems are made. The CCA codes of Ray et a1 [1-6] are reinvestigated using very fine mesh-points to search for resonances. The article advocates the need for an extended basis set & a systematic study using CCAs.

The graviton luminosity of the sun and other stars

Graviton production in electron-electron (e-e) and electron-ion (e-z) scattering is evaluated in the Born approximation. The calculation is compared with that for photon production, that is, Coulomb quadrupole bremsstrahlung, and a number of results are taken over from that problem. Application is made to the sun, and it is found that for the solar plasma the main contribution to the graviton luminosity comes from the central core at r/R approximately 0.1. The total luminosity (Lg) in gravitons is about 7.9 x 10 to the 14th ergs/s, close to an earlier estimate by Weinberg (1965, 1972); about 33 percent of the total results from e-e collisions with the rest from e-z collisions (mainly e-p and e-alpha). Approximate corrections to Born formulas are evaluated, and this Lg includes the associated (approximately + or - 10 percent, respectively) modification. The quantum-mechanical aspects of the solar Lg problem are discussed, and it is shown why a previous classical calculation overestimated Lg by about an order of magnitude. Production of gravitons in binary collisions in other types of stars is discussed briefly. It is found that Lg varies very little along the main sequence. White dwarfs have a typical graviton luminosity LWD approximately 10 to the 19th ergs/s, while neutron stars have LNS approximately 10 to the 25th ergs/s; these estimates are very rough.

Electromagnetic backscattering from a random distribution of lossy dielectric scatterers

Electromagnetic backscattering from a sparse distribution of discrete lossy dielectric scatterers occupying a region 5 was studied. The scatterers are assumed to have random position and orientation. Scattered fields are calculated by first finding the mean field and then by using it to define an equivalent medium within the volume 5. The scatterers are then viewed as being embedded in the equivalent medium; the distorted Born approximation is then used to find the scattered fields. This technique represents an improvement over the standard Born approximation since it takes into account the attenuation of the incident and scattered waves in the equivalent medium. The method is used to model a leaf canopy when the leaves are modeled by lossy dielectric discs.
