Ab Initio Phase Diagram of Tungsten

The phase diagram of tungsten (W) to a pressure (P) of 2500 GPa is investigated using a comprehensive ab initio approach that includes (i) the calculation of the zero temperature (T) free energies (enthalpies) of different solid structures, (ii) the quantum molecular dynamics simulation of the melting curves of different solid structures, (iii) the derivation of the analytic form for the solid-solid phase transition boundary, and (iv) the simulations of the solidification of liquid W into the final solid states on both sides of the solid-solid phase transition boundary, in order to confirm the corresponding analytic form. There are two solid structures confirmed to be present on the phase diagram of W, the ambient body-centered cubic (bcc) and the high-pressure double hexagonal close-packed (dhcp). At T = 0, the bcc-dhcp transition occurs at 1060 GPa, and the transition boundary has a positive slope dT/dP : the bcc-dhcp-liquid triple point is at (P, T) = (1675 GPa, 23680 K).

In situ studies on heavy ion irradiation and partial oxidation induced stacking faults and nanograins in tungsten nanolaminates

Understanding the microstructural evolution of tungsten (W) under extreme irradiation environments is critical for its application as a plasma-facing material in future fusion reactors. Heavy ion irradiation study offers expedited damage accumulation and thus allows irradiation tolerance property prediction in a short period of time. In this study we explore in situ Kr ion irradiation of W nanolaminates at 800 °C and uncover a complex interplay of irradiation-induced transformations, including the emergence of stacking faults, nanograin formation, and generation of thickened grain boundaries defined as GB regions with the thickness of up to 15 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies reveal the formation of extended planar faults and a metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase within the body-centered cubic (bcc) matrix. These structural transitions are facilitated by irradiation-induced shear. They are further stabilized by the presence of oxygen, which promotes stacking fault formation and vacancy trapping. Elevated temperatures enhance defect mobility, enabling dynamic recrystallization into ultrafine grains and the thickening of GBs due to defect absorption and impurity segregation. These findings unravel non-equilibrium phase transformation pathways in heavy ion irradiated W and highlight the critical role of impurity-mediated defect dynamics in governing its radiation tolerance properties.

DuctGPT: A Generative Transformer for Forward Screening of Ductile Refractory Multi-Principal Element Alloys

Designing ductile materials for extreme environments such as fusion reactors requires a deep understanding of the complex interplay between electronic structure, mechanical stability, and wide compositional space. Here, in this work, we introduce DuctGPT, a physics-informed, GPT-powered machine learning platform that enables rapid and accurate prediction of ductility across a wide range of refractory multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs). Trained on both experimental and high-fidelity computational data, DuctGPT integrates descriptors such as density of states at the Fermi level, elastic constants, and valence electron concentration to capture the fundamental mechanisms governing ductile versus brittle behavior. Using this framework, we screen over 1000 compositions in of body-centered cubic (BCC) MPEAs, including two new alloy classes, i.e., NbTa-rich (NbTa $>$ 50 at.%) NbTa-Ti-V and W-rich ($>$ 50 at.%) W-Ti-V MPEAs, to rapidly identify promising alloy compositions with enhanced ductility. Validation against experimental data confirms the model's ability to predict ductility with high fidelity and low uncertainty. By leveraging conversational AI and robust physical modeling, DuctGPT provides a blueprint for the next generation of alloy design assistants, enabling human-AI collaboration in the accelerated discovery of ductile, high-performance materials for fusion, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
