Wind-tunnel investigation of an NACA 23012 airfoil with 30 percent-chord venetian-blind flaps

Report presents the results of an investigation made in the NACA 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel of a NACA 23012 airfoil with 30-percent-chord venetian-blind flaps having one, two, three, and four slats of Clark y section. The three-slat arrangements was aerodynamically the best of those tested but showed practically no improvement over the comparable arrangement used in the preliminary tests published in NACA Technical Report No. 689. The multiple-slat flaps gave slightly higher lift coefficients than the one-slat (Fowler) flap but gave considerably greater pitching-moment coefficients. An analysis of test data indicates that substitution of a thicker and more cambered section for the Clark y slats should improve the aerodynamic and the structural characteristics of the venetian-blind flap.

Methods for Facilitating the Blind Landing of Airplanes

Since the introduction of blind flying, the accomplishment of blind landing on prepared fields has become one of the most pressing problems, and many attempts are being made to solve it. The methods employed, in so far as they have been published, are summarized in this report.

A Perceptual Repetition Blindness Effect

Before concluding Repetition Blindness is a perceptual phenomenon, alternative explanations based on memory retrieval problems and report bias must be rejected. Memory problems were minimized by requiring a judgment about only a single briefly displayed field. Bias and sensitivity effects were empirically measured with an ROC-curve analysis method based on confidence ratings. Results from five experiments support the hypothesis that Repetition Blindness can be a perceptual phenomenon.

Computer Reader for the Blind

Optacon II uses the same basic technique of converting printed information into a tactile image as did Optacon. Optacon II can also be connected directly to a personal computer, which opens up a new range of job opportunities for the blind. Optacon II is not limited to reading printed words, it can convert any graphic image viewed by the camera. Optacon II demands extensive training for blind operators. TSI provides 60-hour training courses at its Mountain View headquarters and at training centers around the world. TeleSensory discontinued production of the Optacon as of December 1996.

A Time History of Control Operation of a C-54 Airplane in Blind Landing Approaches

Tests were made with a C-54 airplane in which airline pilots made several blind approaches to determine whether any special flying techniques were used in blind landings and whether any special handling-qualities requirements would have to be formulated because of such special techniques. It was found that the airplane was flown at all times in the normal manner; that is, all turns were banked turns that were nearly coordinated by use of the rudder so that the sideslip was held close to zero. The pilot expended considerable physical work in continually moving the controls but this wake was due in part to the large friction in the three control systems. The actual control deflections used were small compared to the maximum deflections available.

Kurtosis Approach Nonlinear Blind Source Separation

In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm for blind source signal separation for post-nonlinear mixtures. The mixtures are assumed to be linearly mixed from unknown sources first and then distorted by memoryless nonlinear functions. The nonlinear functions are assumed to be smooth and can be approximated by polynomials. Both the coefficients of the unknown mixing matrix and the coefficients of the approximated polynomials are estimated by the gradient descent method conditional on the higher order statistical requirements. The results of simulation experiments presented in this paper demonstrate the validity and usefulness of our approach for nonlinear blind source signal separation Keywords: Independent Component Analysis, Kurtosis, Higher order statistics.

Discovery of Nine Gamma-Ray Pulsars in Fermi-Lat Data Using a New Blind Search Method

We report the discovery of nine previously unknown gamma-ray pulsars in a blind search of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). The pulsars were found with a novel hierarchical search method originally developed for detecting continuous gravitational waves from rapidly rotating neutron stars. Designed to find isolated pulsars spinning at up to kHz frequencies, the new method is computationally efficient, and incorporates several advances, including a metric-based gridding of the search parameter space (frequency, frequency derivative and sky location) and the use of photon probability weights. The nine pulsars have spin frequencies between 3 and 12 Hz, and characteristic ages ranging from 17 kyr to 3 Myr. Two of them, PSRs Jl803-2149 and J2111+4606, are young and energetic Galactic-plane pulsars (spin-down power above 6 x 10(exp 35) ergs per second and ages below 100 kyr). The seven remaining pulsars, PSRs J0106+4855, J010622+3749, Jl620-4927, Jl746-3239, J2028+3332,J2030+4415, J2139+4716, are older and less energetic; two of them are located at higher Galactic latitudes (|b| greater than 10 degrees). PSR J0106+4855 has the largest characteristic age (3 Myr) and the smallest surface magnetic field (2x 10(exp 11)G) of all LAT blind-search pulsars. PSR J2139+4716 has the lowest spin-down power (3 x l0(exp 33) erg per second) among all non-recycled gamma-ray pulsars ever found. Despite extensive multi-frequency observations, only PSR J0106+4855 has detectable pulsations in the radio band. The other eight pulsars belong to the increasing population of radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars.

The 2003 Bam (Iran) earthquake: Rupture of a blind strike-slip fault

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake devastated the town of Bam in southeast Iran on 26 December 2003. Surface displacements and decorrelation effects, mapped using Envisat radar data, reveal that over 2 m of slip occurred at depth on a fault that had not previously been identified. It is common for earthquakes to occur on blind faults which, despite their name, usually produce long-term surface effects by which their existence may be recognised. However, in this case there is a complete absence of morphological features associated with the seismogenic fault that destroyed Bam.

Optimizing Screening for Preventable Blindness With Head-Mounted Visual Assessment Technology

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness and is diagnosed as early-stage or late-stage. Early-stage AMD is usually asymptomatic and entails pigmentary changes of the retina (Ayoub & Patel, 2009). As the disorder progresses, there are atrophic or neovascular changes that distort vision, especially the central visual field (Ayoub & Patel, 2009). There are several genetic and non-genetic risk factors for AMD and no proven therapy to slow or reverse late-stage atrophic AMD, while anti-VEGF has effectively treated late-stage neovascular AMD. Several genes of interest have also been investigated thoroughly thus far in their connection to AMD and the CFH and ARMS2 genes have shown promise in understanding the genetic basis of the disorder (Awh et al., 2013). There are other epigenetic and environmental factors as well including smoking and low antioxidant levels (Cano et al., 2010). Ongoing investigations include antioxidant supplementation and a smoking cessation regimen to reverse early-stage AMD (Cano et al., 2010). Progress in treating AMD as a disorder across its varied stages requires newer therapeutics along with a more detailed understanding of the genetic and cellular pathways of pathophysiology is needed to better counter this prevalent disorder of the eye.

Floating device aligns blind connections

Panel-mounted connectors overcome the misalignment of blind connectors in electronic rack mounted equipment. The connector is free to move in the vertical direction by the action of a parallelogram mount. This freedom of motion maintains the guide pin hole centerline parallel to the guide pin centerline at all times.
