Component Criticality in BESS for Cybersecurity

Battery energy storage systems (BESS), inverters, and associated digital equipment are integral pieces of interdependent energy delivery systems. When considering the supply chain security of such systems, there is often a misplaced focus on the origin of energy generation and storage materials like battery cells, overlooking the more significant cyber risks that stem from digital power electronics control systems. Part of this misplaced focus is due to the relative costs of these components, with more attention given to expensive raw materials rather than the impactful digital elements themselves. The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is addressing this gap in supply chain security through a systems-of-systems approach that considers the impact various components in digital energy systems can have should misoperation occur. Therefore, INL assigns a cyber criticality score based on quantitative analysis, which enables informed prioritization of mitigations and allows operators to reduce risk in light of the prevalence of a BESS and associated systems foreign supply chain.

From Cell to System: Accelerated hpc Simulations of BESS Aging under Frequency Regulation and Arbitrage use cases

Lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) packs have emerged as a leading solution for grid-scale energy storage, enhancing resiliency and balancing load fluctuations. Yet, experimental characterization of large-format LIB packs-particularly to assess performance and degradation over hundreds of cycles - demands substantial hardware investment and multi-year testing campaigns. In this work, we couple a hierarchical, physics-based modeling framework agnostic to electrode chemistries with high-performance computing to accelerate systems level evaluation by upto two orders of magnitude. Building on the open-source liionpack platform, we implement cell, module, and pack-scale electrochemical models enriched with mechanistic aging mechanisms and deploy them on an HPC cluster to simulate 150−200kWh systems over 500 - 1,000 cycles with in days. We subject these virtual B ESS to both constant-current cycling and realistic grid service profiles spanning frequency regulation, ramp-rate support, and energy arbitrage-and quantify the resulting degradation patterns. Our results reveal that localized cell aging can induce substantial nonuniformity at module and pack levels, with service-specific cycling protocols driving distinct aging modes. This rapid, multiscale modeling approach provides a powerful design-space exploration tool for optimizing electrical architecture, control strategies, and operational schedules to prolong pack lifetime and lower total cost of ownership.

PV-BESS DC-Series Integration for Regulated DC Systems

DC-series integration introduces a novel approach to seamlessly integrate a solar photovoltaic (PV) array and a battery energy storage (BES) in series. This system, referred to as the PV-integrated battery energy storage system—dc series (PVBESS-DCS), simplifies integration and enhances power density by leveraging the inherent voltage-source characteristics of batteries and adopting the concept of partial power processing. However, addressing voltage variations of a PV array and a BES under different operational conditions remains a challenge to apply the PVBESS-DCS to a regulated dc system, where the dc-bus voltage is fixed. This article proposes a PVBESS-DCS solution tailored for regulated dc systems. Within this framework, we present a controllable series voltage source compensating for the voltage differences between the PV and BES sources and the dc bus. Thus, the system can perform PV maximum power point tracking and curtailment control while charging and discharging BES and connected to a regulated dc bus. Additionally, we present a single-stage multiport partial power processing dc–dc converter designed for the proposed PVBESS-DCS. It utilizes a triple active bridge dc–dc converter topology. Finally, this article presents operating principles, control strategies, simulation results, and experimental findings of the proposed PVBESS-DCS for regulated dc systems.

Africa Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Capacity Building Li-Ion Battery Degradation and Performance [Slides]

This presentation is intended for power system engineers, operators, and planners who work on isolated power systems that have (or may soon have) high levels of power generation coming from wind turbines, solar farms, and battery energy storage, which are collectively referred to as inverter-based resources. It describes the basics of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems and lithium-ion battery degradation. Battery degradation at the cell-level is explained, and then the structure and degradation of battery energy storage systems is also explained. This is intended to help power system engineers, operators, and planners to understand and effectively utilize battery energy storage systems.

Case Study: BESS Capacity Building for Malawi

To strengthen Malawi's national electricity grid and to enhance reliability, the government of Malawi and the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi are partnering with the Global Alliance for People and Planet to develop a 20-megawatt/30-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system at Kanengo, Malawi, expected to come online in 2026. In parallel, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet and the National Laboratory of the Rockies implemented a comprehensive technical capacity-building program to equip the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority, and the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences with the expertise needed to plan, regulate, and operate advanced storage systems.

U.S. Solar Photovoltaic BESS System Cost Benchmark Q1 2020 Report

NREL has been modeling U.S. solar photovoltaic (PV) system costs since 2009. This year, our report benchmarks costs of U.S. PV for residential, commercial, and utility-scale systems, with and without storage, built in the first quarter of 2020 (Q1 2020). The methodology includes bottom-up accounting for all system and project-development costs incurred when installing residential, commercial, and utility-scale systems and it models the capital costs and levelized cost of energy for such systems.

Arbitrage and Capacity Firming in Coordination with Day-Ahead Bidding of a Hybrid PV Plant

A hybrid PV plant (HPP) combines a photovoltaic (PV) plant with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which is considered a promising step towards the future of renewable power plants by the U.S. Department of Energy. When the renewable penetration reaches a significant level, a hybrid PV plant can bid in as a controllable thermal plant in the future electricity market. In this study, a bidding and BESS scheduling model is proposed for the HPP. The robust optimization (RO) technique has been utilized to identify the worst-case scenario of uncertainties during the bidding process. To address the overly conservative issue of the single-stage RO, we have decoupled the BESS schedule for arbitrage and PV capacity firming by a two-stage RO formulation. By comparing the output of single-stage RO and two-stage RO, the two-stage RO bids and schedules in a more aggressive manner, which increases the income of HPP. Also, the penalty of under-generation is considered in our model so that the day-ahead bidding decision and arbitrage schedules can be adjusted based on the potential UNDER-GENERATION penalty. Because the proposed model is non-convex and contains multi-stages, the Column-and-Constraint Generation (C&CG) algorithm is applied to the model as the solution. The proposed model has shown better economic performance compared to a state-of-art single-stage bidding method in case studies.
