Methods and apparatus for switching a transponder to an active state, and asset management systems employing same

A transponder that may be used as an RFID tag includes a passive circuit to eliminate the need for an "always on" active RF receiving element to anticipate a wake-up signal for the balance of the transponder electronics. This solution allows the entire active transponder to have all circuit elements in a sleep (standby) state, thus drastically extending battery life or other charge storage device life. Also, a wake-up solution that reduces total energy consumption of an active transponder system by allowing all non-addressed transponders to remain in a sleep (standby) state, thereby reducing total system or collection energy. Also, the transponder and wake-up solution are employed in an asset tracking system.

Winning Asset Management Improvement Team: Maintenance Planning and Scheduling in a Highly Regulated Environment

The Y-12 National Complex (Y-12) site has numerous aging facilities that are crucial to the Department of Energy and the national security strategy for the nation. Y-12’s commitment to safety and regulatory compliance is of the highest importance. The commitment to meet the national security mission also creates additional rigor and complexity to the everyday maintenance and planning process. Y-12 is a collection of many facilities, both old and new, nestled between two ridges in Oak Ridge, TN. Y-12 was made with the short-term focus of ending “The Great War” through the creation of the worlds’ first atomic bomb. Almost eighty (80) years have passed since the groundbreaking, with the mission of the site changing from decade to decade. While the mission has changed, the way Y-12 employees continuously meet the challenge has not. The site was created to react and overcome; Y-12 still takes pride in the ability to react and overcome. The difference is the site is no longer ignorant to the need for a better way to manage the aging facilities and infrastructure. Shear willpower and determination was once the way to reach the objectives, but as a wise man once said, “Work smarter, not harder.” The business case for change started within the senior leadership at Y-12. A team of managers sat down and dictated objectives to provide a clear scope for the maintenance planning and scheduling optimization team, to include our Eruditio integrated blended learning coaches. In addition to providing the direction, they also made themselves available for escalation of issues in the event the team ran in to road blocks.

Economic Risk-Informed Maintenance Planning and Asset Management (Final Report)

The proposed work will provide a holistic framework for cost-minimizing risk-informed maintenance planning, including inspection, in light water reactors (LWRs). Specifically, we develop a two-tier framework that (a) coarsely minimizes the total maintenance cost during the remaining normal operating cycle of the plant prior to the next scheduled outage (long-term), subject to safety requirements, and (b) uses the outputs of the first model to develop a secondary optimization model to finely schedule maintenance activities to maximize the financial impact of these activities in the next week (short-term).

RFID-Based Asset Management for Space Habitats

Remote habitats are often densely packed - items necessary to sustain life - items necessary to conduct work center dot Inhabitant's time is often quite valuable, if not priceless. Resupply shipments can be infrequent and expensive. Inaccurate inventory knowledge can lead to unnecessary overstocking, which can lead to insufficient work and/or living volume. Not being able to find items when they are needed can present: - safety issues - morale issues. RFID technology has the potential solve a lot of these issues.

A Case Study in NREL DERMS Asset Management Implementation

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Smarter Grid Solutions (SGS) plan to present a case study on their implementation of SGS' Strata Grid Distributed Energy Resource Management System at NREL's Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF). The ESIF is one of the nation's premier energy systems integration laboratory facilities focused on development and deployment of clean energy technologies and resilient delivery systems. NREL looked for a DERMS to install at the ESIF that is capable of replicating real world scenarios to control and monitor distributed devices from small residential scale to the grid substation level. The DERMS system demonstrates the use cases of beneficial operation and coordination of modern grid devices, leverage DERs for improved grid planning and operation, demand-side management and customer engagement through bidirectional communication with utilities and energy market operations. The presentation will cover the delivery strategy of NREL and SGS, how the use cases help NREL's research, and NREL and SGS plan to expand the system and use cases.

Using Facility Condition Assessments to Identify Actions Related to Infrastructure

To support cost effective, quality research it is essential that laboratory and testing facilities are maintained in a continuous and reliable state of availability at all times. NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) and its maintenance contractor, Jacobs Technology, Inc. Research Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering (ROME) group, are in the process of implementing a combined Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) program to improve asset management and overall reliability of testing equipment in facilities such as wind tunnels. Specific areas are being identified for improvement, the deferred maintenance cost is being estimated, and priority is being assigned against facilities where conditions have been allowed to deteriorate. This assessment serves to assist in determining where to commit available funds on the Center. RCM methodologies are being reviewed and enhanced to assure that appropriate preventive, predictive, and facilities/equipment acceptance techniques are incorporated to prolong lifecycle availability and assure reliability at minimum cost. The results from the program have been favorable, better enabling LaRC to manage assets prudently.
