Quantal Study of the Exchange Reaction for N + N2 using an ab initio Potential Energy Surface

The N + N2 exchange rate is calculated using a time-dependent quantum dynamics method on a newly determined ab initio potential energy surface (PES) for the ground A" state. This ab initio PES shows a double barrier feature in the interaction region with the barrier height at 47.2 kcal/mol, and a shallow well between these two barriers, with the minimum at 43.7 kcal/mol. A quantum dynamics wave packet calculation has been carried out using the fitted PES to compute the cumulative reaction probability for the exchange reaction of N + N2(J=O). The J - K shift method is then employed to obtain the rate constant for this reaction. The calculated rate constant is compared with experimental data and a recent quasi-classical calculation using a LEPS PES. Significant differences are found between the present and quasiclassical results. The present rate calculation is the first accurate 3D quantal dynamics study for N + N2 reaction system and the ab initio PES reported here is the first such surface for N3.

Ab Initio Simulations of Martensitic Phase Transformations in NiTi-based High Temperature Ternary Shape Memory Alloys: NiTiHf and NiTiZr

Ab initio simulations of phase stability and martensitic phase transitions are performed for NiTi-based ternary shape memory alloys (SMAs). Specifically, we considered NiTiHf and NiTiZr, which are highly studied for high temperature SMA applications. Previously, we performed investigations of ordered NiTi and related binaries [1,2]. However, similar approaches for chemically disordered compounds present additional difficulties. In this work, special quasi-random structures (SQS) were generated for various compositions, x∈[0,0.5], of Ni0.5Ti(0.5-x)Hfx and Ni0.5Ti(0.5-x)Zrx to capture chemical disorder of off-stoichiometric compounds. Phase stability was evaluated through analysis of finite temperature phonon spectra using temperature dependent effective potential (TDEP) method. Free energies for the cubic B2 phase of NiTiHf and NiTiZr were computed using ab initio thermodynamic integration (AITI) developed previously [1,2]. Free energies for monoclinic B19’ and orthorhombic B33 phases were evaluated via quasi harmonic approximations (QHA). Our results show a critical composition (xc) where the three phases of B2, B19’ and B33 meet, i.e. there is a tri-critical point. For x xc, the transition is between B33 and B2, i.e. it is not a shape memory transition. The approach presented here opens the door to ab initio based predictions of MTT for arbitrary ternary SMAs.

Robust ab initio predictions for dimensionless ratios of 𝐸⁢2 and radius observables. II. Estimation of 𝐸⁢2 transition strengths by calibration to the charge radius

Converged results for 𝐸⁢2 observables are notoriously challenging to obtain in ab initio no-core configuration interaction approaches. Matrix elements of the 𝐸⁢2 operator are sensitive to the large-distance tails of the nuclear wave function, which converge slowly in an oscillator basis expansion. Similar convergence challenges beset ab initio prediction of the nuclear charge radius. However, we exploit systematic correlations between the calculated 𝐸⁢2 and radius observables to yield meaningful predictions for relations among these observables. In particular, we examine ab initio predictions for dimensionless ratios of the form 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2)/(𝑒 2 ⁢𝑟 4 ) for nuclei throughout the 𝑝 shell. Finally, meaningful predictions for 𝐸⁢2 transition strengths may then be made by calibrating to the ground-state charge radius if experimentally known.

A global ab initio potential for HCN/HNC, exact vibrational energies, and comparison to experiment

An ab initio (i.e., from first principles) calculation of vibrational energies of HCN and HNC is reported. The vibrational calculations were done with a new potential derived from a fit to 1124 ab initio electronic energies which were calculated using the highly accurate CCSD(T) coupled-cluster method in conjunction with a large atomic natural orbital basis set. The properties of this potential are presented, and the vibrational calculations are compared to experiment for 54 vibrational transitions, 39 of which are for zero total angular momentum, J = 0, and 15 of which are for J = 1. The level of agreement with experiment is unprecedented for a triatomic with two nonhydrogen atoms, and demonstrates the capability of the latest computational methods to give reliable predictions on a strongly bound triatomic molecule at very high levels of vibrational excitation.

A potential energy surface for the process H2 + H2O yielding H + H + H2O - Ab initio calculations and analytical representation

Extensive ab initio calculations on the ground state potential energy surface of H2 + H2O were performed using a large contracted Gaussian basis set and a high level of correlation treatment. An analytical representation of the potential energy surface was then obtained which reproduces the calculated energies with an overall root-mean-square error of only 0.64 mEh. The analytic representation explicitly includes all nine internal degrees of freedom and is also well behaved as the H2 dissociates; it thus can be used to study collision-induced dissociation or recombination of H2. The strategy used to minimize the number of energy calculations is discussed, as well as other advantages of the present method for determining the analytical representation.

We have carried out extensive ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of methane, and these results are used to compute vibrational energy levels. We include basis set extrapolations, core-valence correlation, relativistic effects, and Born- Oppenheimer breakdown terms in our calculations. Ab-Initio Study of Stacking Fault Segregation Behavior in Ni-based Superalloys at High Temperatures

Ni-based superalloys demonstrate extraordinary creep properties compared to traditional metallic systems due to the formation of L12 (γ’) precipitates. Despite experimental evidence of alloying element segregation to the stacking faults, prior ab-initio efforts indicated repulsion of Nb from superlattice intrinsic stacking faults (SISFs) . Due to the importance of this element in key strengthening mechanisms, we developed a new technique to account for multi-component segregation behavior at temperature combining ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations. Using this technique, we replicated experimentally observed segregation behavior of Nb, Co, and Ti to the SISF in L12 (Figure 1). Furthermore, we investigated the co-segregation behaviors of individual pairs of alloying elements to determine the interaction effects which lead to this segregation behavior in the full alloy system. By simulating the reduced-chemistry models using our approach, we reconciled previous ab-initio calculations demonstrating repulsion of Nb from the SISF and the experimentally observed segregation behavior.

A coupled channel study of HN2 unimolecular decay based on a global ab initio potential surface

The unimolecular decay lifetimes of several vibrational states of HN2 are determined on the basis of an accurate coupled channel dynamics study using a global analytical potential surface. The surface reproduces the ab initio points with an rms error of 0.08 kcal/mol for energies below 20 kcal/mol. Modifications to the potential that describe the effect of improving the basis set in the ab initio calculations are provided. Converged coupled channel calculations are performed for the ground rotational state of HN2 to determine the lifetimes of the lowest ten vibrational states. Only the ground vibrational state (000) and first excited bend (001) are found to have lifetimes longer than 1 ps. The lifetimes of these states are estimated at 3 x 10 to the -9th and 2 x 10 to the -10th s, respectively. Variation of these results with quality of the ab initio calculations is not more than a factor of 5.

Heats of Segregation of BCC Binaries from Ab Initio and Quantum Approximate Calculations

We compare dilute-limit segregation energies for selected BCC transition metal binaries computed using ab initio and quantum approximate energy methods. Ab initio calculations are carried out using the CASTEP plane-wave pseudopotential computer code, while quantum approximate results are computed using the Bozzolo-Ferrante-Smith (BFS) method with the most recent parameters. Quantum approximate segregation energies are computed with and without atomistic relaxation. Results are discussed within the context of segregation models driven by strain and bond-breaking effects. We compare our results with full-potential quantum calculations and with available experimental results.

Conformational Characteristics of Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) Based Upon Ab Initio Electronic Structure Calculations on Model Molecules

Conformational energy contours of perfluoroalkanes, determined from ab initio calculations, confirm the well-known spitting of trans states into two minima at plus or minus 17 degrees but also show that the gauche states split as well, with minima at plus or minus 124 degrees and plus or minus 84 in order to relieve steric crowding. The directions of such split distortions from the perfectly staggered states are strongly coupled for adjacent pairs of bonds in a manner identical to the intradyad pair for poly (isobutylene) chains. These conformational characteristics are fully represented by a six-state rotational isomeric state (RIS) model for PTFE comprised of t(+), t(-), g(sup +)+, g(sup +)-, g(sup -) + and g(sup -)-states, located at the split energy minima. The resultant 6 x 6 statistical weight matrix is described by first-order interaction parameters for the g+(+) (ca. 0.6 kcal/mol) and g+- (ca. 2.0 kcal/mol) states, and second order parameters for the g(sup +)+g(sup +)+ (ca 0.6 kcal/mol) and g(sup +)+g(sup -)+ (ca. 1.0 kcal/mol) states. This six-state RIS model, without adjustment of the geometric or energy parameters as determined from the ab initio calculations, predicts the unperturbed chain dimensions and the fraction of gauche bonds as a function of temperature for PTFE in good agreement with available experimental values.

Ab Initio Polariton Spectra of ZnTPP Molecules Collectively Coupled Inside an Optical Cavity

Exciton-polaritons are quasi-particles formed by the quantum mechanical hybridization of electronic and photonic excitations. Despite extensive investigations, a fundamental understanding of molecular polariton spectra and the polariton delocalization from an ab initio theoretical perspective remains elusive. We simulate experimentally measured linear transmission spectroscopy of many Zinc(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) molecules collectively coupled to a cavity from first principles. Our theoretical approach incorporates many low-lying electronic excitations in ZnTPP molecules, as well as collective light-matter couplings between ZnTPP and the quantized radiation modes, both of which are shown to be the key to accurately recovering the experimental spectra. We further analyzed to what extent the polariton and dark states are delocalized over many molecules, for the first time, using fully ab initio descriptions of the molecules. We finally investigate the line width as a function of detuning, providing new theoretical insights into the experimentally observed motional narrowing behavior. Our work presents first-ofits- kind theoretical studies on molecular polariton spectra, offering a new perspective on molecular polariton formation in realistic ab initio molecular systems whose rich, many-state nature provides spectral features enabled by the high density of electronic states beyond simple quantum optics models.

Ab initio quantum many-body description of superconducting trends in the cuprates

Using a systematic ab initio quantum many-body approach that goes beyond low-energy models, we directly compute the superconducting pairing order and estimate the pairing gap of several doped cuprate materials and structures within a purely electronic picture. We find that we can correctly capture two well-known trends: the pressure effect, where the pairing order and gap increase with intra-layer pressure, and the layer effect, where the pairing order and gap vary with the number of copper-oxygen layers. From these calculations, we observe that the strength of superexchange and the covalency at optimal doping are the best descriptors for these trends. Our microscopic analysis further identifies that strong short-range spin fluctuations and multi-orbital charge fluctuations drive the development of the pairing order. Our work illustrates the possibility of a material-specific ab initio understanding of unconventional high-temperature superconducting materials.

Experimental and Ab Initio Studies of the HDO Absorption Spectrum in the 13165-13500 1/cm Spectral Region

The HDO absorption spectrum has been recorded in the 13165 - 13500 cm(exp-1) spectral region by Intracavity Laser Absorption Spectroscopy. The spectrum (615 lines), dominated by the 2n2 + 3n3 and n1+3n3 bands was assigned and modeled leading to the derivation of 196 accurate energy levels of the (103) and (023) vibrational states. Finally, 150 of these levels have been reproduced by an effective Hamiltonian involving two vibrational dark states interacting with the (023) and ( 103) bright states. The rms deviation achieved by variation of 28 parameters is 0.05-1 cm, compared to an averaged experimental uncertainty of 0.007-1 cm, indicating the limit of validity of the effective Hamiltonian approach for HDO at high vibrational excitation. The predictions of previous ab initio calculations of the HDO spectrum were extensively used in the assignment process. The particular spectral region under consideration has been used to test and discuss the improvements of new ab initio calculations recently performed on the basis of the same potential energy surface but with an improved dipole moment surface. The improvements concern both the energy levels and the line intensities. In particular, the strong hybrid character of the n1+3n3 band is very well accounted for by the the new ab initio calculations.

Accurate ab initio quartic force fields for borane and BeH2

The quartic force fields of BH3 and BeH2 have been computed ab initio using an augmented coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) method and basis sets of spdf and spdfg quality. For BH3, the computed spectroscopic constants are in very good agreement with recent experimental data, and definitively confirm misassignments in some older work, in agreement with recent ab initio studies. Using the computed spectroscopic constants, the rovibrational partition function for both molecules has been constructed using a modified direct numerical summation algorithm, and JANAF-style thermochemical tables are presented.

Response functions and giant monopole resonances for light to medium-mass nuclei from the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core–shell model

Using the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core–shell model, we compute sum rules and response functions for light to medium-mass nuclei, starting from interactions that are derived in the chiral effective field theory. Specifically, we investigate electromagnetic transitions of monopole, dipole and quadrupole nature for 4 He, and explore dominant features of giant monopole resonances in symmetric nuclei such as the closed-shell 4 He and 16 O light nuclei, the intermediate-mass open-shell 20 Ne and the medium-mass closed-shell 40 Ca. Furthermore, for the NNLO opt chiral potential, we determine parameter-free monopole sum rules, which can provide information on the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter. Here, we report 213(10) MeV as an estimate for the compression modulus for infinite nuclear matter, which overlaps with the lower range of values often used in current astrophysical applications.
