Elliptical ejecta of asteroid Dimorphos is due to its surface curvature

Kinetic deflection is a planetary defense technique delivering spacecraft momentum to a small body to deviate its course from Earth. The deflection efficiency depends on the impactor and target. Among them, the contribution of global curvature was poorly understood. The ejecta plume created by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test impact on its target asteroid, Dimorphos, exhibited an elliptical shape almost aligned along its north-south direction. Here, we identify that this elliptical ejecta plume resulted from the target’s curvature, reducing the momentum transfer to 44 ± 10% along the orbit track compared to an equivalent impact on a flat target. We also find lower kinetic deflection of impacts on smaller near-Earth objects due to higher curvature. A solution to mitigate low deflection efficiency is to apply multiple low-energy impactors rather than a single high-energy impactor. Rapid reconnaissance to acquire a target’s properties before deflection enables determining the proper locations and timing of impacts.

Meteor over New York City: Brines in a primitive CM asteroid

The CI (Ivuna-type) carbonaceous material returned from asteroids Ryugu and Bennu contain mobilized sodium from the evaporation or freezing of liquid water into brines, shedding light on the internal structure of ice-rich CI-type worlds and the formation of prebiotic organic compounds. The formation of brines has not been demonstrated in CM (Mighei-type) carbonaceous chondrites, which also supplied organic matter to the early Earth. Here, we announce the fall of a primitive meteorite from a daytime fireball over the New York metropolitan area in July 2024. It is a CM2 breccia that contains unique CM1 clasts rich in water and sodium. The meteorite contains abundant amino acids and other products of organic chemistry in brines that reveal subsurface processes on CM-type asteroid parent bodies.

Dark matter hail: Detecting macroscopic dark matter with asteroids, planetary rings, and craters

Dark matter could be composed of macroscopic objects with large masses and geometric cross-sections spanning many decades. Here, we investigate the potential interaction of such “stuff-sized” dark matter by considering its interactions with asteroids, planetary rings, and terrestrial bodies. This hail of dark matter could catastrophically destroy these Solar System objects, evaporate them from their orbits, or cause substantial cratering. We estimate these effects and use them to place competitive bounds on a wide, previously unconstrained swathe of the dark matter parameter space.

Elemental and isotopic signatures of Asteroid Ryugu support three early Solar System reservoirs

Understanding the number and locations of different reservoirs present in the early Solar System is crucial to understanding the Solar System’s origin and evolution. Previous work has suggested that three unique isotopic reservoirs existed in the early Solar System but subsequent works have challenged that idea. Here we present elemental abundances along with Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn isotopic data from primitive material returned by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Hayabusa2 mission to asteroid (162173) Ryugu to make inferences on the Solar System’s early architecture. Data from Ryugu particle A0208 are consistent with a close genetic heritage between Ryugu and CI chondrites. Here, we employ principal component analysis (PCA) on these Ryugu and published meteorite data to demonstrate that Ryugu and CI chondrites are distinct from other known astromaterials, strongly supporting the existence of a third major isotopic reservoir in the early Solar System.
