Machine learning for precise hit position reconstruction in Resistive Silicon Detectors

RSDs are LGAD silicon sensors with 100% fill factor, based on the principle of AC-coupled resistive read-out. Signal sharing and internal charge multiplication are the RSD key features to achieve picosecond-level time resolution and micron-level spatial resolution, thus making these sensors promising candidates as 4D-trackers for future experiments. This paper describes the use of a neural network to reconstruct the hit position of ionizing particles, an approach that can boost the performance of the RSD with respect to analytical models. The neural network has been trained in the laboratory and then validated on test beam data. The device-under-test in this work is a 450 μm-pitch matrix from the FBK RSD2 production, which achieved a resolution of about 65 μm at the DESY Test Beam Facility, a 50% improvement compared to a simple analytical reconstruction method, and a factor two better than the resolution of a standard pixel sensor of equal pitch size with binary read-out. The test beam result is compatible with the laboratory ones obtained during the neural network training, confirming the ability of the machine learning model to provide accurate predictions even in environments very different from the training one. Prospects for future improvements are also discussed.

State-of-the-art and evolution of UFSD sensors design at FBK

Over the past few years, there has been growing interest in the development of silicon sensors able to simultaneously measure accurately the time of passage and the position of impinging charged particles. In this contribution, a review of the progresses in the design of UFSD (Ultra-Fast Silicon Detectors) sensors, manufactured at the FBK (Fondazione Bruno Kessler) Foundry, aiming at tracking charged particles in 4 dimensions, is presented. The state-of-the-art UFSD sensors, with excellent timing capability, are planned to be used in both ATLAS and CMS experiments detector upgrade, in order to reduce the background due to the presence of overlapping events in the same bunch crossing. The latest results on sensors characterization including time resolution, radiation resistance and uniformity of the response are here summarized, pointing out the interplay between the design of the gain layer and the UFSD performances. The research is now focusing on the maximization of the sensor fill factor, to be able to reduce the pixel size, exploring the implementation of shallow trenches for the pixel isolation and the development of resistive AC-coupled UFSD sensors. In conclusion, a brief review on research paths tailored for detection of low energy X-rays or for low material budget applications is given.

Ionic Peltier effect in Li-ion electrolytes

The coupled transport of charge and heat provide fundamental insights into the microscopic thermodynamics and kinetics of materials. We describe a sensitive ac differential resistance bridge that enables measurements of the temperature difference on two sides of a coin cell with a resolution of better than 10 μK. We use this temperature difference metrology to determine the ionic Peltier coefficients of symmetric Li-ion electrochemical cells as a function of Li salt concentration, solvent composition, electrode material, and temperature. The Peltier coefficients Π are negative, i.e., heat flows in the direction opposite to the drift of Li ions in the applied electric field, large, –Π > 30 kJ mol –1 , and increase with increasing temperature at T > 300 K. The Peltier coefficient is approximately constant on time scales that span the characteristic time for mass diffusion across the thickness of the electrolyte, suggesting that heat of transport plays a minor role in comparison to the changes in partial molar entropy of Li at the interface between the electrode and electrolyte. Here, our work demonstrates a new platform for studying the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of electrochemical cells and provides a window into the transport properties of electrochemical materials through measurements of temperature differences and heat currents that complement traditional measurements of voltages and charge currents.

In-plane uniaxial-strain tuning of superconductivity and charge-density wave in CsV 3 Sb 5

The kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 with exotic electronic properties has attracted substantial research interest, and the interplay between the superconductivity and the charge-density wave is crucial for understanding its unusual electronic ground state. In this work, we performed resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements on CsV 3 Sb 5 single crystals uniaxially-strained along [100] and [110] directions. We find that the uniaxial-strain tuning effect ofT c (dT c /dε) andT CDW (dT CDW /dε) are almost identical along these distinct high-symmetry directions. These findings suggest the in-plane uniaxial-strain-tuning ofT c andT CDW in CsV 3 Sb 5 are dominated by associatedc-axis strain, whereas the response to purely in-plane strains is likely small.

Processing Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors from amorphous state

The bismuth based high T sub c superconductors can be processed via an amorphous Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu oxide. The amorphous oxides were prepared by melting the constituent powders in an alumina crucible at 1200 C in air followed by pouring the liquid onto an aluminum plate, and rapidly pressing with a second plate. In the amorphous state, no crystalline phase was identified in the powder x ray diffraction pattern of the quenched materials. After heat treatment at high temperature the amorphous materials crystallized into a glass ceramic containing a large fraction of the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) phase T sub c = 110 K. The processing method, crystallization, and results of dc electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements are discussed.

In situ Pulsed Laser Deposition of C-Axis Oriented MgB2 Films and Their Characterization

The recent discovery of an intermetallic superconductor MgB2 has renewed interest in the area of superconductivity not only because of fundamental understanding of superconductivity but also due to its potential applicability in devices such as thermal detectors. Considerable amount of research has been devoted to obtain MgB2 films by an all in situ growth technique. We have grown MgB2 thin films by an all in situ pulsed laser deposition process from pure B and Mg targets. Ultrathin layers of B and Mg were deposited in a multilayer configuration. Hundreds of such Mg-B bilayers with a capping Mg layer on the top were deposited on sapphire substrate. These depositions were done in high vacuum (approx. 10(exp -7) Torr) and at room temperature. After deposition, such a configuration was annealed at high temperature for a short time in a forming gas (4% H2 in Ar). The best films, obtained by this procedure, showed superconducting transition temperature approx. 30 K. These films have been characterized by x-ray diffraction, Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry, AC susceptibility-, resistivity- (with and without magnetic field) and 1/f noise-measurements. The physical properties of these films will be presented and discussed.

First ITER CS module test results

The ITER Central Solenoid (CS) is under fabrication by the US ITER organization and its subcontractors. US ITER will supply seven modules to ITER IO, six of which will be assembled in a stack that forms the ITER Central Solenoid, with one as a spare. The first module fabrication has been completed by General Atomics (GA) at their facility and has begun testing including high voltage testing, Paschen testing in the vacuum and then testing at 4.5 K and up to 40 kA in order to demonstrate compliance of the coil to ITER requirements. In the paper we present the Test Plan and results of the CS Module performance tests, especially at 40 kA current. Herein, AC losses, joint resistances and hydraulic characteristics of the coil are all measured. Displacements of the coil height and hoop strain of the CS Module are also measured to verify structural and mechanical characteristics of the coil along with cooldown shrinkage of the coil. This information is used for verification of the stack behavior of CS in ITER operation. The test results and preliminary analyses results are presented, compared to expectations, and discussed. All measured parameters suggest that the CS module will perform well in ITER machine.

Physical properties of the layered $\mathcal{f}$-electron van der Waals magnet Ce 2 Te 5

Here. we report a detailed study of the magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic properties of Ce 2 Te 5 single crystals, a layered $\mathcal{f}$-electron van der Waals magnet. Four consecutive transitions at ~5.2, 2.1, 0.9, and 0.4 K were observed in the ac-plane electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$, which were further confirmed in specific heat $C_\text{p}(T)$ measurements. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, the magnetic-field variation of $\rho(T)$, and the increase of the first transition temperature ($T_c$ ~ 5.2 K) with applied magnetic field indicates ferromagnetic order, while the decrease of the other transitions with field suggests different states with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions below $T_2$ ~ 2.1 K, $T_3$ ~ 0.9 K, and $T_4$ = 0.4 K. Critical behavior analysis around Tc that gives critical exponents $\beta$ = 0.31(2), $\gamma$ = 0.99(2), $\delta$ = 4.46(1), and $T_c$ = 5.32(1) K indicates that Ce 2 Te 5 shows a three-dimensional magnetic critical behavior. Moreover, the Hall resistivity ρxy indicates that Ce2Te5 is a multiband system with a relatively high electron mobility ~2900 cm 2 V –1 s –1 near $T_c$, providing further opportunities for future device applications.

Processing Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors from amorphous state

Researchers produced superconducting ceramics of the Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system started from a glass. To form the glass, the mixed oxide powder was melted at 1200 C in air. The liquid was quenched rapidly by pouring it onto an aluminum plate and rapidly pressing with another plate. The quenched compound was in the form of black amorphous solid, whose x-ray powder pattern has no crystalline peaks. After heat treatment at high temperatures, the glass crystallized into a superconductor. The crystalline phases in the superconductor identified using x-ray diffraction patterns. These phases were that associated with the superconducting phases of T(sub c) = 80 K (Bi2Ca1Sr2Cu2Ox) and of T(sub c) = 110 K (Bi2Ca2Sr2Cu3Ox). The dc resistivity and the ac susceptibility of these superconductors were studied.

Anomalous Hall effect in the polar magnet Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 : A candidate for hosting skyrmions

While recent theoretical studies have positioned noncollinear polar magnets with C nv symmetry as compelling candidates for realizing topological magnetic phases and substantial intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity, experimental realizations of the same in strongly correlated systems remain rare. Here, we present a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and extended topological magnetic ordering in Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 with hexagonal C 6v symmetry. Observation of topological Hall response, corroborated by metamagnetic anomalies in isothermal magnetization, peak/hump features in field-evolution of ac susceptibility and longitudinal resistivity suggest the signature of topological magnetic phases. The anomalous Hall effect is quantitatively accounted for by the intrinsic Berry curvature-mediated mechanism. Finally, our results underscore polar magnets as a promising platform to investigate a plethora of emergent electrodynamic responses rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology.

Eddy Current Probe for Surface and Sub-Surface Inspection

An eddy current probe includes an excitation coil for coupling to a low-frequency alternating current (AC) source. A magneto-resistive sensor is centrally disposed within and at one end of the excitation coil to thereby define a sensing end of the probe. A tubular flux-focusing lens is disposed between the excitation coil and the magneto-resistive sensor. An excitation wire is spaced apart from the magneto-resistive sensor in a plane that is perpendicular to the sensor's axis of sensitivity and such that, when the sensing end of the eddy current probe is positioned adjacent to the surface of a structure, the excitation wire is disposed between the magneto-resistive sensor and the surface of the structure. The excitation wire is coupled to a high-frequency AC source. The excitation coil and flux-focusing lens can be omitted when only surface inspection is required.

Effect of Fuel Composition, Engine Operating Variables, and Spark-Plug Type and Condition on Preignition-Limited Performance of an R-2800 Cylinder

The preignition characteristics of the R-2800 cylinder, as effected by fuel consumption, engine operating variables, and spark plug type and condition, were evaluated. The effects on preignition-limited performance of various percentages of aromatics (benzene, toluene, cumene, xylene) in a base fuel of triptane were investigated. Two paraffins (triptane and S + 6.0 ml TEL/gal) and two refinery blends (28-R and 33-R) were preignition rated. The effect of changes in the following engine operating variables on preignition limit was determined: inlet-air temperature, rear spark plug gasket temperature, engine speed, spark advance, tappet clearance, and oil consumption. Preignition limits of the R-2800 cylinder using Champion C34S and C35S and AC-LS86, LS87, and LS88 spark plugs were established and the effect of spark plug deterioration was investigated. No definite trends in preignition-limited indicated mean effective pressure were indicated for aromatics as a class when increased percentages of different aromatics were added to a base fuel of triptane. Three types of fuel (aromatics, paraffins, and refinery blends) showed a preignition range for this cylinder from 65 to 104 percent when based on the performance of S plus 6.0 ml TEL per gallon as 100 percent. The R-2800 cylinder is therefore relatively insensitive to fuel composition when compared to a CFR F-4 engine, which had a pre-ignition range from 72 to 100 percent for the same fuels. Six engine operating variables were investigated with the following results: preignition-limited indicated mean effective pressure decreased, with increases in engine speed, rear spark plug gasket temperature, inlet-air temperature, and spark advance beyond 20 F B.T.C. and was unaffected by rate of oil consumption or by tappet clearance. Spark plugs were rated over a range of preignition-limited indicated mean effective pressure from 200 to 390 pounds per square inch at a fuel-air ratio of 0.07 in the following order of increased resistance to preignition: AC-LS97, AC-LS88, Champion C358, AC-LS86, and Champion C34S. Spark plug deterioration in the form of cracks in the porcelain had been broken away from the center electrode and were retained in the spark plug cavity, the preignition limit was decreased as much as 57 percent. When the broken pieces had been removed, the preignition limit increased from that of the undamaged porcelain as the weight of removed porcelain was increased.

Interaction of magnetic fields with spinons in a fractionalized state

The 4d-electron trimer lattice Ba₄Nb₁₋ₓRu₃₊ₓO₁₂ exhibits either a quantum spin liquid (QSL) or a heavy-fermion strange metal (HFSM) phase, depending on Nb content. In the QSL state, itinerant spinons act as effective heat carriers, enhancing thermal conductivity. Strikingly, applying a magnetic field up to 14 T causes an abrupt, up-to-5000% increase in heat capacity below 150 mK, disrupting the linear temperature dependence typical of both phases. Meanwhile, AC susceptibility and electrical resistivity remain nearly unchanged, while thermal conductivity drops by up to 40% below 4 K. These results suggest spinons, despite being charge-neutral, are highly sensitive to magnetic fields at low temperatures. We propose that the magnetic field could induce Anderson localization of spinons, creating emergent non-magnetic two-level systems responsible for the Schottky-like anomaly in heat capacity. These findings point to a previously unexplored regime of spinon dynamics, potentially governed by field-induced localization and distinct from conventional magnetic or transport signatures.

Oxygen stabilization induced enhancement in J(sub c) and T(sub c) of superconducting oxides

In an attempt to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the high temperature superconducting oxides, high T(sub c) composites were prepared composed of the 123 compounds and AgO. The presence of extra oxygen due to the decomposition of AgO at high temperature is found to stabilize the superconducting 123 phase. Ag is found to serve as clean flux for grain growth and precipitates as pinning center. Consequently, almost two orders of magnitude enhancement in critical current densities were also observed in these composites. In addition, these composites also show much improvement in workability and shape formation. On the other hand, proper oxygen treatment of Y5Ba6Cu11Oy was found to possibly stabilize superconducting phase with T(sub c) near 250 K. I-V, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements indicate the existence of this ultra high T(sub c) phase in this compound. Detailed structure, microstructure, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of the superconducting composites and the ultra high T(sub c) compound are presented and discussed.
