Ferroic phase transitions and magnetoelectric coupling in cobalt doped BaTiO 3

Magnetoelectric (ME) materials exhibit interesting physics with cross coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic order parameters and thus strong potential to be utilized in memory, spintronics and other multifunctional electronic/magnetic devices. Doping of suitable transition metals in ferroelectrics can induce magnetism and ME coupling and modify the physical properties. Here, we report the structural, electronic, magnetic and ME coupling of 3.5, 5 and 7.5 mol% cobalt doped BaTiO 3 (BTO) ceramics. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the samples are single phase having a tetragonal crystal structure with P4mm symmetry. The tetragonality ratio is found to decrease with increasing cobalt content. We observed a Fano-like asymmetric peak in the [A 1 (LO 1 )] Raman mode at ~173 cm -1 in all the cobalt doped BTO samples. The cobalt dopants are shown to be uniformly distributed throughout the surface of the samples. We observed a lowering of the ferroelectric transition temperature and increasing diffusivity parameter with increasing cobalt concentration. The electrical properties of all the samples have been investigated in detail by impedance spectroscopy and ac conductivity studies before and after the ferroelectric phase transitions. All the samples show hysteretic ferroelectric behavior with a clear saturation state that decreases with increasing cobalt content. The observed ferroelectricity in these samples is intrinsic in nature. The 3.5% cobalt doped BTO sample exhibits paramagnetic behavior whereas the 5 and 7.5% cobalt doped BTO samples show ferromagnetic ordering below 43 K. The 7.5% cobalt doped BTO samples show significant ME coupling.

AC and DC Hybrid Distribution Grids with Solar Integration: Architecture, Stabilization and Cost Assessment

In this project, a holistic analysis of architecture, stabilization, and cost/efficiency analysis in hybrid AC and DC distribution grids are conducted. Particularly, versatile and cost-efficient multiport converters are developed to not only integrate solar sources and other DERs in DC grids, but also facilitate the interactive operation of DC sub-grids and conventional AC distribution grids. Meanwhile, a universal and extended impedance-based stabilization approach with a decentralized and adaptive virtual impedance loop is developed in hybrid AC and DC distribution grids, which comprehensively covers the active stabilization of DC sections, AC sections, and interface inverters interlinking both AC and DC sections. Furthermore, to quantitatively evaluate the cost and efficiency of hybrid AC and DC distribution grids and quantify the improvement of hybrid AC and DC grids over conventional pure AC grids, the project team develops an alpha-version tool to monitor and calculate the efficiency and cost of the DC, AC, or hybrid AC and DC grids.

Computationally Efficient AC Resistance Model for Stator Winding With Rectangular Conductors

The resistance of the electric machine’s windings is an important parameter when analyzing the machine’s performance, as conduction losses in the winding are often the largest loss component. However, this resistance changes with frequency due to the skin and proximity effects, making it challenging to accurately estimate these losses. In this article, a computationally efficient, general method of calculating the ac resistance of an electric machine winding with rectangular conductors is presented. The method uses a 1-D magnetoquasi-static model of the stator slot region to develop boundary transfer relations between individual turns. These relations are then used to create an impedance matrix from which the ac resistance can be calculated. This technique is more flexible than previous solutions since it can accommodate different winding configurations such as fractional-pitch windings. It is shown that a fractional-pitch winding has a lower ac resistance than a full-pitch winding. Finally, finite-element analysis simulations and experimental results are used to validate the proposed method.

Generic characterization of electrical test benches for AC- and HVDC-connected wind power plants

The electrical test and assessment of wind turbines go hand in hand with standards and network connection requirements. In this paper, the generic structure of advanced electrical test benches, including grid emulator or controllable grid interface, wind torque emulator, and device under test, is proposed to harmonize state-of-the-art test sites. On the other hand, modern wind turbines are under development towards new features, concerning grid-forming, black-start, and frequency support capabilities as well as harmonic stability and control interaction considerations, to secure the robustness and stability of renewable-energy-based power systems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new and revised test standards and methodologies to address the new features of wind turbines. This paper proposes a generic test structure within two main groups, including open-loop and closed-loop tests. The open-loop tests include the IEC 61400-21-1 standard tests as well as the additional proposed test options for the new capabilities of wind turbines, which replicate grid connection compliance tests using open-loop references for the grid emulator. In addition, the closed-loop tests evaluate the device under test as part of a virtual wind power plant and perform real-time simulations considering the grid dynamics. The closed-loop tests concern grid connection topologies consisting of AC and HVDC, as well as different electrical characteristics, including impedance, short-circuit ratio, inertia, and background harmonics. The proposed tests can be implemented using available advanced test benches by adjusting their control systems. The characteristics of a real power system can be emulated by a grid emulator coupled with real-time digital simulator systems through a high-bandwidth power-hardware-in-the-loop interface.

Light induced ion migration studies in perovskite solar cell using nonlinear impedance spectroscopy

Complex interactions between mobile ions and charge carriers in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) make it challenging to fully understand their dynamic interplay. Exposure to light further complicates these interactions, altering the system’s dynamics and inducing nonlinear effects that lead to changes in the J−V curve. Understanding these effects is crucial for improving the operational stability of PSCs. Impedance spectroscopy (IS) is a powerful technique for evaluating relaxation processes in the frequency domain; however, it is limited in capturing nonlinear contributions. Here, in this work, nonlinear impedance spectroscopy (NLIS) is employed to analyze the higher harmonic response to AC perturbation, both in the dark and after short-term light exposure. A shift in the low-frequency (LF) higher harmonic peak is observed after open-circuit light exposure, attributed to an altered electric field suggesting ion re-distribution, whereas closed-circuit exposure shows no LF shift, indicating minimal ion movement. Additionally, light exposure reduces higher-order admittance, more notably in open-circuit conditions, suggesting decreased recombination. Temperature-dependent analysis was conducted to characterize the activation energy of migrating species, identifying iodide as the dominant migrating ion.

Improvement of the AC orbit bump method of local kick factor measurement using reference bunches

Here we have improved the AC orbit bump technique of local kick factor measurement. This technique, developed at NSLS-II a few years ago, is based on local sine-wave excitation of the electron beam by four fast correctors adjacent to the impedance location. By implementing reference bunches and the time gate function of beam position monitors, we are now able to measure the AC orbits of bunches with different intensities simultaneously. This improvement allows us to obtain the impedance-driven orbit distortion in a single measurement, significantly improving the measurement accuracy and reducing the measurement time.

Tunable Microwave Conductance of Nanodomains in Ferroelectric PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 Thin Film

Ferroelectric materials exhibit spontaneous polarization that can be switched by electric field. Beyond traditional applications as nonvolatile capacitive elements, the interplay between polarization and electronic transport in ferroelectric thin films has enabled a path to neuromorphic device applications involving resistive switching. A fundamental challenge, however, is that finite electronic conductivity may introduce considerable power dissipation and perhaps destabilize ferroelectricity itself. In this work, tunable microwave frequency electronic response of domain walls injected into ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 ) on the level of a single nanodomain is revealed. Tunable microwave response is detected through first-order reversal curve spectroscopy combined with scanning microwave impedance microscopy measurements taken near 3 GHz. Contributions of film interfaces to the measured AC conduction through subtractive milling, where the film exhibited improved conduction properties after removal of surface layers, are investigated. Using statistical analysis and finite element modeling, we inferred that the mechanism of tunable microwave conductance is the variable area of the domain wall in the switching volume. These observations open the possibilities for ferroelectric memristors or volatile resistive switches, localized to several tens of nanometers and operating according to well-defined dynamics under an applied field.

Low-Frequency Stability Analysis of Inverter-Based Islanded Multiple-Bus AC Microgrids Based on Terminal Characteristics

For system planning of three-phase inverter-based islanded ac microgrids, the low frequency instability issue caused by interactions of inverter droop controllers is a major concern. When internal control information of procured commercial inverters is unknown, impedance-based small-signal stability criteria facilitate prediction of resonances in medium and high frequency ranges, but they usually assume the grid fundamental frequency as constant and thus they are incapable of analyzing the low-frequency oscillation of the fundamental frequency in islanded microgrids. Aiming at solving this issue, this paper proposes two stability analysis methods based on terminal characteristics of inverters and passive connection network including the dynamics of the fundamental frequency for analysis of low-frequency stability in islanded multiple-bus microgrids. Based on the Component Connection Method (CCM) to systematically separate inverters from the passive connection network, a general approach is developed to model the microgrid as a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) negative feedback system in the common system d-q reference frame. By applying the generalized Nyquist stability criterion (GNC) to the return-ratio and return-difference matrices of the MIMO system model, the low-frequency stability related to the fundamental frequency can be analyzed using the measured terminal characteristics of inverters. Finally, analysis and simulation of a 37-bus microgrid verify the effectiveness of the proposed stability analysis methods.

System and method for implementing a zero-sequence current filter for a three-phase power system

In a three-phase, four-wire electrical distribution system, a zig-zag transformer and at least one Cascade Multilevel Modular Inverter (CMMI) is coupled between the distribution system and the neutral. A controller modulates the states of the H-bridges in the CMMI to build an AC waveform. The voltage is chosen by the controller in order to control an equivalent impedance that draws an appropriate neutral current through the transformer. This neutral current is generally chosen to cancel the neutral current sensed in the line. The chosen neutral current may be based on a remotely sensed imbalance, rather than on a local value, determined by the power utility as a critical load point in the system. The desired injection current is then translated by the controller into a desired zero-sequence reactive impedance, based on measurement of the local terminal voltage, allowing the controller to regulate the current without generating or consuming real power.

Fixed gap capacitive power transfer coupling for wound field synchronous machines

An electrical rotating machine, such as a generator or motor, communicates power from a stationary location to the rotating rotor of the rotating machine via opposed pairs of capacitor plates, one plate of each pair rotating with the rotor and one plate of each pair fixed not to rotate. Larger plate gaps suitable for mechanically rigid plates are possible through high-voltage and high-frequency AC signals managed by using a dielectric support design for the capacitor plates minimizing dielectric loss and/or impedance matching on the rotor.

Anisotropic time-dependent London approach: Application to the ac response in the Meissner state

The anisotropic London equations taking into account the normal currents are derived and applied to the problem of the surface impedance in the Meissner state of anisotropic materials. It is shown that the complex susceptibility of the anisotropic slab depends on the orientation of the applied microwave field relative to the crystal axes. In particular, the anisotropic sample in the microwave field is subject to a torque, unless the field is directed along one of the crystal principle axes.

Flexible PCB Windings Size Optimization for Winding AC Resistance Minimization Under the Sinusoidal Voltage Regime

In this paper, optimization of the winding AC resistance of the flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) wire windings is performed. A one-dimensional model of the FPCB winding is introduced and an equation for the FPCB winding AC resistance and its low and medium frequency approximation are derived. The approximate FPCB winding AC resistance equation is used to derive optimum thickness of the FPCB winding conductor thickness at which minimum of winding AC resistance (global optimum) is achieved. The Finite Element Method analysis and experimental verification of derived equations (winding resistance, impedance, power loss, and temperature measurements) is performed in order validate derived model and winding resistance equation.

Segmented Energy Routing for a Modular AC/DC Hybrid System

This article presents a modular ac/dc system with both distributed and centralized power ports for energy router (ER) applications. In each module of the described system, photovoltaic (PV) power generation units, battery-type energy storage (ES) units, and critical loads are connected to the cascaded H-bridge (CHB)-organized medium-voltage (MV) dc links, with fully distributed low-voltage (LV) dc power ports. Copies of modules share the centralized load bus and interact with an MV ac grid in parallel. Hybrid power port (HPO) assigns flexibility to the system but makes energy routings a necessity for stable operation. In this article, a segmented energy management strategy for the HPO-ER is proposed. In terms of the grid-side power transferring, the system ratings are intentionally designed to match significant power imbalance. Focally, a segmented energy management strategy is proposed to realize fully autonomous energy routing involving MV ac grid, distributed PV generations, distributed battery storages, and LV load. The system is proven to be stable using the derived impedance-based model considering the interaction between power blocks. The feasibility of the topology and control strategy is also verified through software simulation, laboratorial hardware prototype experiment, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation.

Anion Effects on the Interfacial Structure and Bulk Physical Properties in Choline-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Electrolytes

Electrolytes consisting of choline (Ch) salts with acetate (Ac) and oxalate (Ox) anions were studied in mixtures with ethylene glycol (EG), in comparison to chloride (Cl)- and bis(trifluorosulfonyl)imide (TFSI)-containing systems to understand the impact of anion size and charge density on the bulk electrolyte and interfacial properties. These represent hydrogen-bonded concentrated electrolytes where the Ch salts are the H-bond acceptors (HBAs) and EG is the H-bond donor (HBD) in 1:2 and 1:4 HBA:HBD ratios. Increased H-bonding in Ch 2 Ox with EG compacts the liquid compared to ChAc, consistent with the increased dissociation energies of the HBA:HBD clusters with Ox –2 calculated by density functional theory (DFT), thus leading to denser and more viscous liquids. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) were used to investigate interfacial charge density and the electrode surface species. Differential capacitance curves demonstrate weak dependence on potential except for ChAc:EG, where Ac – is found to adsorb on the Au surface, in particular at +0.055 V vs Ag quasi-reference while no specific adsorption was observed on glassy carbon (GC). In situ SERS measurement confirms the formation of a surface layer in the ChAc:EG systems resulting from a Au–acetate interaction. Despite the structural similarities, Ox –2 did not show specific binding or any dependence of capacitance on potential as a result of strongly solvating EG molecules via H-bonds. Furthermore, this study shows that the charge density of the HBAs impacts both bulk properties and the electrical double-layer formation in concentrated H-bonded electrolytes that is relevant to electrochemical kinetics and morphology in electrodeposition processes and energy storage applications.

An Ultra-Fast Inrush-Current-Free Startup Method for Grid-tie Inverter without Voltage Sensors

This paper proposes an ultra-fast inrush-currentfree startup method for grid-tie inverters without voltage sensors and phase-locked loop (PLL). Traditionally, the grid-tie inverter needs the voltage measured from points of common couplings (PCC) to generate the phase angle via PLL for inverter pulsewidth- modulation (PWM) signals. The startup procedure is slow and inrush current occurs if the initial PWM does not match the unknown grid voltage well. This paper proposes a startup method that only uses measured inverter ac currents to generate the initial PWM by controlling the current to zero. The generated PWM pattern can be used to reproduce the real grid voltage regardless of the grid impedance. The zero-crossing points of the grid voltage are detected and then used for grid synchronization. The proposed startup procedure only needs a few cycles (16.67 ms/cycle) to reliably synchronize the inverter to the grid without any inrush current. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of this control strategy.

Stability Analysis of Parallel Connected Bidirectional WPT System

This paper presents a stability analysis of parallel-connected bi-directional series-series resonant network wireless power transfer (WPT), optimized for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications. The study addresses critical stability challenges in systems integrated with diverse distributed energy resources (DERs), including photovoltaics, fuel cells, wind turbines, energy storage systems, and the AC grid. The stability of such integrated DC grid systems is paramount for ensuring reliable operation, particularly under varying power flow conditions and dynamic interactions between parallel WPT systems. The analysis included system impedance characterization, state-space modeling, and open and closed-loop stability evaluations. The results demonstrated that the integration of a robust control architecture effectively mitigates instability risks and supports scalable, efficient operation. This work underscores the converter's adaptability and its potential for large-scale deployment in wireless EV charging infrastructures and integrated DC grid systems.
