Magnetic ac susceptibility of superconducting Ta films for quantum computing

Recently, breakthroughs were reported in the long coherence time (>0.5 ms) transmon qubit using tantalum films (Ta). Identifying the loss mechanism in Ta films will help further improve the performance of Ta-based superconducting qubits. We report a study of superconducting properties in two sets of Ta films grown on c-cut and a-cut sapphires respectively using contact transport and noncontact magnetic ac susceptibility measurements. Although the resistive transition appears to be similar in both films, we found strikingly different responses in their complex magnetic susceptibilities χ' + iχ'$^{'}$ .χ'$^{'}$ in the c-cut films exhibits a sharp peak at superconducting transition Tc and becomes featureless below Tc indicating a strongly coupled superconducting state. In contrast, χ'$^{'}$ \ in the a-cut films exhibits a broad peak near Tc and a second peak appears below Tc, indicating granular superconductivity behavior. This second peak χ'$^{'}$ in is associated with the hysteresis loss at weak-link-type grain boundaries, which is believed to be a leading source of decoherence in the a-cut Ta films. The derived magnetic loss tangent in the a-cut films is about one order of magnitude higher than in the c-cut films. This study demonstrates that ac susceptibility is an excellent probe for characterizing bulk superconducting properties of the constituent superconducting materials used in qubits.

Anomalous Ferromagnetic Behavior in Orthorhombic Li 3 Co 2 SbO 6

Monoclinic Li 3 Co 2 SbO 6 has been proposed as a Kitaev spin liquid candidate and investigated intensively, whereas the properties of its polymorph, the orthorhombic phase, are less known. In this work, we report the magnetic properties of orthorhombic Li 3 Co 2 SbO 6 as revealed by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation (μSR), and neutron diffraction measurements. Successive magnetic transitions at 115, 89, and 71 K were observed in the low-field dc susceptibility measurements. The transitions below T N (115 K) are suppressed at higher applied fields. However, zero-field ac susceptibility measurements reveal distinct frequency-independent transitions at about 114, 107, 97, 79, and 71 K. A long-range magnetic ordered state was confirmed by specific heat, μSR, and neutron diffraction measurements, all indicating a single transition at about 115 K. The discrepancy between different measurements is attributed to possible stacking faults and/or local disorders of the ferromagnetic zigzag chains, resulting in ferromagnetic boundaries within the overall antiferromagnetic matrix.

Benefits and challenges in deployment of low global warming potential R290 refrigerant for room air conditioning equipment in California

High global warming potential gases (“high GWP”) are the fastest growing sector of greenhouse gas emissions in the world and in California and are primarily used as refrigerant gases in refrigeration and cooling equipment. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) refrigerants are the dominant type of high GWP gases with GWP values thousands of times larger than CO 2 on a 100-year timescale. Refrigerant-grade propane (“R290”) has a very low GWP (GWP = 3.3) with good thermodynamic properties and good cooling equipment performance but the flammability of any leaked refrigerant makes equipment design, handling, and maintenance critical factors to manage. This paper focuses on the potential climate benefits and costs of transitioning to R290 refrigerant in small room air conditioning (AC) units, specifically window AC, packaged terminal AC/heat pumps (PTAC/PTHP), and mini-split heat pumps. Overall climate impact for a transition to all three types of air conditioning units in the 2022–2051 timeframe is found to be from 15 to 64 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) savings in California with a cost of saved CO 2 eq that ranges from $14.50 per ton of CO 2 eq saved to -$50.30 per ton of CO 2 eq saved (net savings) depending on whether the baseline refrigerant is R32 or R410A and depending on the relative energy efficiency for R290 units compared to baseline units.

Modification of magnetic ground state in Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 by thermal annealing

In this work, we have investigated the thermal annealing effect on the physical properties of an AlB 2 -type ternary intermetallic compound, Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 , that undergoes spin freezing behaviour coexisting with spatially limited antiferromagnetic phase below 9.9 K in as-cast form. Thermal annealing effect is found to result in considerable changes in the magnetic ground state properties of the system. Though only one magnetic transition around 9.9 K is observed for as-cast compound, the annealed sample exhibits two distinct magnetic transitions; one around T N ~ 13.5 K and another around T f ~ 4 K. The magnetization measurements and zero field neutron diffraction study reveal that the high temperature transition is antiferromagnetic type, though of limited correlation length, while the low temperature transition corresponds to spin freezing behaviour. The ac susceptibility and heat capacity studies also confirm the existence of frustrated cluster glass state at lower temperature than the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Additionally, ac susceptibility data exhibits signature of an additional peak in the even lower temperature region (at 2.2 K for zero frequency) that tends to shift in opposite direction with frequency in contrast to that observed for conventional glassy transitions. The change in intrinsic local structural disorder of Ni and Si ions associated with annealing has been argued to be responsible for the different magnetic behaviour in as-cast and annealed samples.

Measurement of 227 Ac impurity in 225 Ac using decay energy spectroscopy

225 Ac is a valuable medical radionuclide for targeted $\alpha$ therapy, but 227 Ac is an undesirable byproduct of an accelerator-based synthesis method under investigation. Sufficient detector sensitivity is critical for quantifying the trace impurity of 227 Ac, with the 227 Ac/ 225 Ac activity ratio predicted to be approximately 0.15% by end-of-bombardment (EOB). Superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters offer high resolution energy spectroscopy using the normal-to-superconducting phase transition to measure small changes in temperature. By embedding 225 Ac production samples in a gold foil thermally coupled to a TES microcalorimeter we can measure the decay energies of the radionuclides embedded with high resolution and 100% detection efficiency. This technique, known as decay energy spectroscopy (DES), collapses several peaks from $\alpha$ decays into single Q-value peaks. In practice there are more complex factors in the interpretation of data using DES, which we will discuss in this paper. Using this technique we measured the EOB 227 Ac impurity to be (0.142 ± 0.005)% for a single production sample. This demonstration has shown that DES is a useful tool for quantitative measurements of complicated spectra.

A Co-Simulation Framework for Steady-State Analyses of Multiple Droop-based MTdc Grids in Continental-Scale Systems

The growing scale and complexity of planning continental hybrid ac and multi-terminal dc (MTdc) systems require scalable steady-state modeling and analysis approaches not currently available in commercial tools. This paper presents a comprehensive multi-fidelity model-conversion framework that enables the efficient transition of MTdc grid models from production cost modeling (PCM) and approximated ac power flow to detailed ac–MTdc power flow for large-scale planning studies. The core of this framework is a scalable co-simulation approach that, for the first time, enables power flow analysis in continental-scale ac–MTdc systems. It seamlessly couples commercial ac solvers with a detailed MTdc grid model that incorporates droop-based control and current-limiting strategies of multiple meshed MTdc grids. Leveraging this capability, an evaluation framework to systematically assess and compare different MTdc power redispatch strategies under ac and dc contingencies is introduced. The proposed framework and algorithm are evaluated using a combined Western and Eastern Interconnection system with 11 MTdc grids of various sizes, showing a coherent transition from PCM to detailed ac–MTdc power flow and improved system performance in voltage regulation and line overload mitigation following typical contingencies.

Sample Dependence of Magnetism in the Next-Generation Cathode Material LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2

We present a structural and magnetic study of two batches of polycrystalline LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (commonly known as Li NMC 811), a Ni-rich Li ion battery cathode material, using elemental analysis, X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetometry, and polarized neutron scattering measurements. We find that the samples, labeled S1 and S2, have the composition Li 1–x Ni 0.9+x–y Mn y Co 0.1 O 2 , with x = 0.025(2), y = 0.120(2) for S1 and x = 0.002(2), y = 0.094(2) for S2, corresponding to different concentrations of magnetic ions and excess Ni 2+ in the Li + layers. Both samples show a peak in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) dc susceptibility at 8.0(2) K, but the temperature at which the ZFC and FC (field-cooled) curves deviate is substantially different: 64(2) K for S1 and 122(2) K for S2. The ac susceptibility measurements show that the transition for S1 shifts with frequency whereas no such shift is observed for S2 within the resolution of our measurements. Our results demonstrate the sample dependence of magnetic properties in Li NMC 811, consistent with previous reports on the parent material LiNiO 2 . Here, we further establish that a combination of experimental techniques is necessary to accurately determine the chemical composition of next-generation battery materials with multiple cations.

Structure and magnetism of the triangular lattice material YbBO 3

Abstract YbBO 3 is a member of the orthoborate family of materials which contains a triangular arrangement of Yb 3+ ions. Here we study the physical properties of YbBO 3 with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and ac susceptibility measurements. The neutron diffraction measurements confirm that our samples of YbBO 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C 2 / c (#15) which contains two crystallographically distinct Yb 3+ sites decorating a slightly distorted triangular lattice. Heat capacity and ac susceptibility measurements indicate a potential transition to magnetic order at 0.4 K. In agreement with these observations, neutron diffraction measurements at 0.044 K observe magnetic Bragg peaks which can be indexed by a propagation vector of (0 0 1). Although determining a unique spin configuration corresponding to the observed magnetic Bragg peaks is not possible, model refinements indicate that the ordered moments are likely in the range of 0.4–0.9 μ B and, notably, require moments on both Yb sites. In addition to the magnetic Bragg peaks, diffuse scattering at low Q is observed indicating that the transition does not correspond to complete long range magnetic order. The two-site picture for YbBO 3 is further evidenced by the number of crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Together these results show that YbBO 3 is a two-site triangular lattice material with signatures of long-range order as well as shorter ranged spin correlations.

Single Crystal Synthesis and STM Studies of High Temperature Superconductors

This is a final report for the work initiated in September of 1994 under the grant NAG8-1085 - NASA/OMU, on the fabrication of bulk and single crystal synthesis, specific heat measuring and STM studies of high temperature superconductors. Efforts were made to fabricate bulk and single crystals of mercury based superconducting material. A systematic thermal analysis on the precursors for the corresponding oxides and carbonates were carried out to synthesized bulk samples. Bulk material was used as seed in an attempt to grow single crystals by a two-step self flux process. On the other hand bulk samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility, We studied the specific heat behavior in the range from 80 to 300 K. Some preliminary attempts were made to study the atomic morphology of our samples. As part of our efforts we built an ac susceptibility apparatus for measuring the transition temperature of our sintered samples.

Gibbs free-energy difference between the glass and crystalline phases of a Ni-Zr alloy

The heats of eutectic melting and devitrification, and the specific heats of the crystalline, glass, and liquid phases have been measured for a Ni24Zr76 alloy. The data are used to calculate the Gibbs free-energy difference, Delta G(AC), between the real glass and the crystal on an assumption that the liquid-glass transition is second order. The result shows that Delta G(AC) continuously increases as the temperature decreases in contrast to the ideal glass case where Delta G(AC) is assumed to be independent of temperature.

Ferroic phase transitions and magnetoelectric coupling in cobalt doped BaTiO 3

Magnetoelectric (ME) materials exhibit interesting physics with cross coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic order parameters and thus strong potential to be utilized in memory, spintronics and other multifunctional electronic/magnetic devices. Doping of suitable transition metals in ferroelectrics can induce magnetism and ME coupling and modify the physical properties. Here, we report the structural, electronic, magnetic and ME coupling of 3.5, 5 and 7.5 mol% cobalt doped BaTiO 3 (BTO) ceramics. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the samples are single phase having a tetragonal crystal structure with P4mm symmetry. The tetragonality ratio is found to decrease with increasing cobalt content. We observed a Fano-like asymmetric peak in the [A 1 (LO 1 )] Raman mode at ~173 cm -1 in all the cobalt doped BTO samples. The cobalt dopants are shown to be uniformly distributed throughout the surface of the samples. We observed a lowering of the ferroelectric transition temperature and increasing diffusivity parameter with increasing cobalt concentration. The electrical properties of all the samples have been investigated in detail by impedance spectroscopy and ac conductivity studies before and after the ferroelectric phase transitions. All the samples show hysteretic ferroelectric behavior with a clear saturation state that decreases with increasing cobalt content. The observed ferroelectricity in these samples is intrinsic in nature. The 3.5% cobalt doped BTO sample exhibits paramagnetic behavior whereas the 5 and 7.5% cobalt doped BTO samples show ferromagnetic ordering below 43 K. The 7.5% cobalt doped BTO samples show significant ME coupling.

Thermodynamic insights into the intricate magnetic phase diagram of EuAl 4

The tetragonal intermetallic compound EuAl 4 hosts an exciting variety of low-temperature phases. In addition to a charge density wave below 140 K, four ordered magnetic phases are observed below 15.4 K. Recently, a skyrmion phase was proposed based on Hall effect measurements under a c-axis magnetic field. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the phase transitions in EuAl 4 under c-axis magnetic field. Our dilatometry, heat-capacity, DC magnetometry, AC magnetic susceptibility, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements reveal three magnetic phase transitions not previously reported. The first key result is a detailed H ∥ [001] magnetic phase diagram mapping the seven phases we observe. Second, we identify a high-field phase, phase VII, which directly corresponds to the region were skyrmions have been previously suggested. Our results provide guidance for future studies exploring the complex magnetic interactions and spin structures in EuAl 4 .

Homologous acetone carboxylases select Fe(II) or Mn(II) as the catalytic cofactor

The Irving-Williams series refers to the predicted stabilities of transition metal complexes where the observed general stability for divalent first-row transition metal complexes increase across the row. Acetone carboxylases (ACs) use a coordinated divalent metal at their active site in the catalytic conversion of bicarbonate and acetone to form acetoacetate. Highly homologous ACs discriminate among different divalent metals at their active sites such that variations of the enzyme prefer Mn(II) over Fe(II), defying Irving-Williams-predicted behavior. Defining the determinants that promote metal discrimination within the first-row transition metals is of broad fundamental importance in understanding metal-mediated catalysis and metal catalyst design.

The Software Design for the Wide-Field Infrared Explorer Attitude Control System

The Wide-Field Infrared Explorer (WIRE), currently scheduled for launch in September 1998, is the fifth of five spacecraft in the NASA/Goddard Small Explorer (SMEX) series. This paper presents the design of WIRE's Attitude Control System flight software (ACS FSW). WIRE is a momentum-biased, three-axis stabilized stellar pointer which provides high-accuracy pointing and autonomous acquisition for eight to ten stellar targets per orbit. WIRE's short mission life and limited cryogen supply motivate requirements for Sun and Earth avoidance constraints which are designed to prevent catastrophic instrument damage and to minimize the heat load on the cryostat. The FSW implements autonomous fault detection and handling (FDH) to enforce these instrument constraints and to perform several other checks which insure the safety of the spacecraft. The ACS FSW implements modules for sensor data processing, attitude determination, attitude control, guide star acquisition, actuator command generation, command/telemetry processing, and FDH. These software components are integrated with a hierarchical control mode managing module that dictates which software components are currently active. The lowest mode in the hierarchy is the 'safest' one, in the sense that it utilizes a minimal complement of sensors and actuators to keep the spacecraft in a stable configuration (power and pointing constraints are maintained). As higher modes in the hierarchy are achieved, the various software functions are activated by the mode manager, and an increasing level of attitude control accuracy is provided. If FDH detects a constraint violation or other anomaly, it triggers a safing transition to a lower control mode. The WIRE ACS FSW satisfies all target acquisition and pointing accuracy requirements, enforces all pointing constraints, provides the ground with a simple means for reconfiguring the system via table load, and meets all the demands of its real-time embedded environment (16 MHz Intel 80386 processor with 80387 coprocessor running under the VRTX operating system). The mode manager organizes and controls all the software modules used to accomplish these goals, and in particular, the FDH module is tightly coupled with the mode manager.

Entropic signatures of the skyrmion lattice phase in MnSi 1- x Al x and Fe 1- y Co y Si

Here, the entropic signatures of magnetic phase transitions in the skyrmion lattice host compounds MnSi 0.962 Al 0.038 and Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 Si were investigated through low field magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. These data indicate that the conical to skyrmion transition that occurs with the application of magnetic field in MnSi 0.962 Al 0.038 is characterized by clear discontinuity in the magnetic entropy as expected for first order topological phase transition. These same magnetoentropic features are negligibly small in isostructural Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 Si due to the level of chemical substitution related disorder and differences in the spin dynamics (range and timescales). Despite the obvious similarities in the magnetic structures of these two compounds, the transitions between these phases is substantially different indicating a surprising nonuniversality to the magnetic phase transitions in this class of materials.
