Value of abstraction in performance assessment – When is a higher level of detail necessary?

In this study, different approaches in performance assessment (PA) of the long-term safety of a repository for radioactive waste were examined. This investigation was carried out as part of the DECOVALEX-2023 project, an international collaborative effort for research and model comparison. One specific task of the DECOVALEX-2023 project was the Salt Performance Assessment Modelling task (Salt PA), which aimed at comparing various models and methods employed in the performance assessment of deep geological repositories in salt. In the context of the Salt PA task, three distinct teams from SNL (United States), Quintessa Ltd (United Kingdom), and GRS (Germany) examined the consequences of employing different levels of abstractions when modelling the repository's geometry and implementing various features and processes, using the example of a simple hypothetical repository structure in domal salt. Each team applied their own tools: PFLOTRAN (SNL), QPAC (Quintessa) and LOPOS (GRS). These differ essentially regarding numerical concept and degree of detail in the representation of the underlying physical processes. The discussion focused on when simplifications can be appropriately applied and what consequences result from them. Furthermore, it was explored when and if a higher level of fidelity in geometry or physical processes is required.

Abstraction hierarchy to define biofoundry workflows and operations for interoperable synthetic biology research and applications

Lack of standardization in biofoundries limits the scalability and efficiency of synthetic biology research. Here, we propose an abstraction hierarchy that organizes biofoundry activities into four interoperable levels: Project, Service/Capability, Workflow, and Unit Operation, effectively streamlining the Design‑Build‑Test‑Learn (DBTL) cycle. This framework enables more modular, flexible, and automated experimental workflows. It improves communication between researchers and systems, supports reproducibility, and facilitates better integration of software tools and artificial intelligence. Our approach lays the foundation for a globally interoperable biofoundry network, advancing collaborative synthetic biology and accelerating innovation in response to scientific and societal challenges.

Stereo-vision thermal imaging system for tracking flying animals in wind farm areas (CRADA #763) Abstract

CRADA 763: abstract ThermalTracker-3D (TT3D) is a stereo vision thermal imaging system that provides 3D flight information on detected birds, bats, and other flying targets. The system was initially developed for use in the siting and monitoring of offshore wind projects to establish pre-construction and operation collision risk data but can be applied to terrestrial wind energy projects as well as national security monitoring. This technology will reduce monitoring cost, decrease processing time, and provide more accurate data for wind energy developers/operators and regulatory agencies. While the current technology is at a high level of readiness, Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7, there remain several barriers to commercialization, particularly around ease-of-use, that result in a low Adoption Readiness Level (ARL). The proposed work will advance commercialization readiness by streamlining calibration methods for built systems. This work will:1. 1. develop a software package for factory and dynamic calibration processes 2. test that package with existing prototype TT3D systems, and 3. conduct outreach with industry end-users.

Optically Stimulated Luminescence Data Storage (Abstract)

We will develop a tunable pulsed electron source capable of generating variable intensity highly-focused electron pulses at high repetition rates. Specifically, we need to demonstrate a high-speed variable electron gun capable of generating a variable intensity electron pulse containing between 102 and 105 electrons with an accelerating voltage of 1kV focused into a spot size <100nm in diameter at with a pulse rate >10MHz (with path to 300MHz). This combined performance cannot be achieved by commercially available electron sources. The primary technology path selected for this work will be to use a photocathode approach, where an easily modulated UV laser is used to stimulate electron emission. The approach utilizes the advances made in the development of the Dynamic TEM (DTEM), though this project will be simpler in that the pulse intensity is lower and there is no requirement for coherency. Alternate paths, including using a traditional electron beam modulated using a v-shaped slit and electrostatically deflecting the beam to adjust intensity; will also be considered for future capabilities. The electron source will then be used generate optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) in lithium fluoride (LiF) substrates to demonstrate the potential for OSL to serve as a basis technology for next generation data storage systems.

Development of Electrolytes for Lithium Ion Batteries in Low Temperature Applications (Abstract)

The purpose of the proposed project is to improve the low temperature performance of Navitas Systems Advanced Solution Group’s (“Navitas”) commercial high-power lithium ion batteries for vehicle cold crank applications. PNNL has developed an intellectual property about electrolyte additives and electrolyte formulations to greatly improve the low temperature discharge performance and the long-term cycling stability at room temperature and elevated temperatures of lithium ion batteries.

Definition and Execution of Regulatory requirements for acceptance of the Whooshh Fish Transport System (Abstract)

The purpose of this project is to assist in the definition, summarization, and execution of the regulatory requirements that validate the Whooshh Fish Transport System (WFTS) as an accepted method of fish passage transport for Endangered Species Act- (ESA) listed species; moving these fish past in-stream barriers, such as hydropower facilities. Validation of this technology, through testing by PNNL, means that regulatory agencies will have documented evidence from which to support an approval decision enabling Whooshh to quickly commercialize their product for use in waterways with ESA listed species and provide the hydropower relicense/development marketplace a viable solution to the fish passage problem that threatens the hydropower industry. Given the definition of “take” in the ESA, without validation, commercialization in this space in the U.S. will not happen because the regulatory agencies will not have the determinative study results they require to authorize the use of this new technology that interact with ESA-listed species.
