Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of CoFeVGe-based compounds: Experiment and theory

We have carried out a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of both stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric CoFeVGe alloys. In particular, we have investigated CoFeVGe, Co 1.25 Fe 0.75 VGe, Co 0.75 Fe 1.25 VGe, and CoFe 0.75 VGe bulk alloys. Our first principles calculations suggest that all four alloys show ferromagnetic order, where CoFeVGe, Co 1.25 Fe 0.75 VGe, and Co 0.75 Fe 1.25 VGe are highly spin polarized with spin polarization values of over 80%. However, the spin polarization value of CoFe 0.75 VGe is only about 60%. We have synthesized all four samples using arc melting and high-vacuum annealing at 600 °C for 48 hours. The room temperature x-ray diffraction of these samples exhibits a cubic crystal structure with disorder. All the samples show single magnetic transitions at their Curie temperatures, where the Curie temperature and high field (3T) magnetization are 288 K and 42 emu/g; 305 K and 1.5 emu/g; 238 K and 39 emu/g; and 306 K and 35 emu/g for CoFeVGe, Co 1.25 Fe 0.75 VGe, Co 0.75 Fe 1.25 VGe, and CoFe 0.75 VGe, respectively.

Pressure control of the spin reorientation transition in the rare-earth orthoferrite YbFeO 3

YbFeO 3 is exceptional among the rare-earth orthoferrites for having the lowest spin-reorientation transition (SRT) temperature, T SRT ≃8K, which makes it particularly appealing to examine the interplay between noncollinear magnetism of the Fe sublattice and quasi-one-dimensional XXZ effective S = 1/2 chains of Yb 3+ moments. Our paper focuses on the magnetic dynamics of YbFeO 3 using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), at temperatures below and above the SRT, under an applied hydrostatic pressure of 2 GPa, and in magnetic fields up to 4 T. The low-energy zero-field excitation spectrum at ambient pressure and temperatures below the SRT is dominated by a gapped magnon mode of the Yb subsystem at 0.84 meV with a dispersion only in the [00L] direction. Above T SRT , a continuum appears on top of the magnon mode because of temperature population of the magnon band, and the gap decreases to around 0.4 meV. The INS spectra in the magnetic field, both above and below T SRT , are characterized by two well-separated gapped modes. The SRT is clearly visible at low fields B < 1T, but it gradually disappears at higher magnetic fields. The hydrostatic pressure of p = 2GPa effectively reduces the transition width, ΔT SRT , and keeps the SRT at higher fields up to B≃3T. Here, we discuss the effect of the applied pressure in the frame of the modified mean-field theory and show that in the vicinity of the T SRT the pressure tunes the fourth-order anisotropy constant that effectively reduces the ΔT SRT .

Quantum spin ice response to a magnetic field in the dipole-octupole pyrochlore Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7

The pyrochlore magnet Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 has attracted much attention as a quantum spin ice candidate whose novelty derives in part from the dipolar-octupolar nature of the Ce 3+ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom it possesses. We report heat capacity measurements on single crystal samples of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 down to T~0.1K in a magnetic field along the [$1,\bar{1},0$] direction. These measurements show that the broad hump in the zero-field heat capacity moves higher in temperature with increasing field strength and is split into two separate humps by the [$1,\bar{1},0$] magnetic field at ~2T. These separate features are due to the decomposition of the pyrochlore lattice into effectively decoupled chains for fields in this direction: One set of chains (α chains) is polarized by the field while the other (β chains) remains free. This situation is similar to that observed in the classical spin ices Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 , but with the twist that here the strong transverse exchange interactions produce substantial quantum effects. Our theoretical modeling suggests that the β chains are close to a critical state, with nearly-gapless excitations. We also report elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystal Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in [$1,\bar{1},0$] and [0,0,1] magnetic fields at temperatures down to T=0.03K. The elastic scattering behaves consistently with the formation of independent chains for a [$1,\bar{1},0$] field, while the [0,0,1] field produces a single field-induced elastic magnetic Bragg peak at (0,2,0) and equivalent wavevectors, indicating a polarized spin ice state for fields above ~3T. For both [$1,\bar{1},0$] and [0,0,1] magnetic fields, our inelastic neutron scattering results show an approximately dispersionless continuum of scattering that increases in both energy and intensity with increasing field strength. By modeling the complete set of experimental data using numerical linked cluster and semiclassical molecular dynamics calculations, we demonstrate the dominantly multipolar nature of the exchange interactions in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 and the smallness of the parameter θ, which controls the mixing between dipolar and octupolar degrees of freedom. Finally, these results support previous estimates of the microscopic exchange parameters and place strong constraints on the theoretical description of this prominent spin ice candidate.

On interpretation of fluctuations of conserved charges at high T

Abstract Fluctuations of conserved charges calculated on the lattice which can be measured experimentally, are well reproduced by a hadron resonanse gas model at temperatures below$$T_{ch} \sim 155$$ T ch ∼ 155 MeV and radically deviate from the hadron resonance gas predictions above the chiral restoration crossover. This behaviour is typically interpreted as an indication of deconfinement in the quark-gluon plasma regime. We present an argument that this interpretation may be too simple. The argument is based on the scaling of quantities with the number of colors: demonstration of deconfinement and QGP requires observable that is sensitive to$$\sim N_c^2$$ ∼ N c 2 gluons while the conserved charges are sensitive only to quarks and above$$T_{ch}$$ T ch scale as$$N_c^1$$ N c 1 . The latter scaling is consistent with the existence of an intermediate regime characterized by restored chiral symmetry and by approximate chiral spin symmetry which is a symmetry of confining interaction. In this regime the energy density, pressure and entropy density scale as$$N_c^1$$ N c 1 . In the large$$N_c$$ N c limit this regime might become a distinct phase separated from the hadron gas and from QGP by phase transitions. A natural observable that associates with deconfinement and is directly sensitive to deconfined$$N_c^2-1$$ N c 2 - 1 gluons is the Polyakov loop; in the$$N_c=3$$ N c = 3 world it remains very close to 0 at temperatures well above chiral crossover, reaches the value$$\sim 0.5$$ ∼ 0.5 around$$\sim 3T_{ch}$$ ∼ 3 T ch and the value close to 1 at temperatures$$\sim 1$$ ∼ 1 GeV.

SuperNu Version 4.x

We seek to release SuperNu, Version 4.x, as a continuation of development for the open source SuperNu software. The SuperNu, Version 3.x Monte Carlo radiative transfer code for astrophysical transients was released with GPLv3 copyright, asserted by LANL in 2015. For the next release we have features planned for development , including: opacity implementation (including non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects), generalized source implementation (e.g. for emulating shock heating in Type II supernovae), 3T (electron, ion, radiation) internal energy update, special relativity corrections through O(v^2/c^2), light polarization (e.g. for comparison to spectroplarimetry observations of supernovae and kilonovae), and infrastructure features (checkpoint and restart of simulations, and tools including setup and Slurm batch scripts and simulation post-processing/analysis scripts). These features are intended to improve the fidelity and/or better understand uncertainty in supernova and kilonova light curve calculations.

Performance measurement of emerging 3- and 4-terminal tandem solar cells

Tandem solar cells are not limited to the conventional two-terminal (2-T) configuration. Multi-terminal designs like three-terminal (3-T) and four-terminal (4-T) devices have gained increasing attention in the PV community due to their relaxed current-matching requirement between subcells and their potential for enhanced energy yield. However, reliable and standardized methods for evaluating the performance of multi-terminal tandems remain underdeveloped. This work addresses this gap by providing comprehensive measurement guidelines tailored to these advanced configurations. We examine key coupling mechanisms between subcells, including the shared electrical load in 3-T devices and optical luminescent coupling in both 3-T and 4-T devices, to enable accurate and consistent performance evaluation. Furthermore, we propose two stabilized measurement methods for emerging 3-T tandem cells incorporating perovskite subcells: (1) a two-dimensional maximum-power-point tracking (MPPT) approach that continuously tracks both subcells' maximum power points (P MAX ) until convergence to stabilized outputs, and (2) a hybrid approach that combines MPPT for one subcell with stabilized current recording under fixed voltage biases near the P MAX of the other, allowing robust extraction of the overall stabilized P MAX (termed “MPPT + asymptotic P MA X scan” method). These methods directly address the dynamic current responses inherent to perovskite-containing tandems, providing a foundation for meaningful and reproducible performance comparisons.

Fundamentals of Three-Terminal Tandem Solar Cells: a Comprehensive Taxonomy

Three-terminal tandem (3TT) solar cells can overcome some of the limitations of two- and four-terminal tandem designs. However, the coupled nature of the cells adds a degree of complexity to the devices themselves and the ways that their performance can be measured and reported. To facilitate understanding, we have developed a taxonomy which encompasses all types of 3TT devices, enabling a common nomenclature for discussing devices and performance. Once the physical devices, contact nodes, and loading circuitry have been self-consistently described, it becomes apparent that a wide range of 3TT devices share a common set of design and operating principles.

Three Artificial Spintronic Leaky Integrate-and-Fire Neurons

We report that due to their non-volatility and intrinsic current integration capabilities, spintronic devices that rely on domain wall (DW) motion through a free ferromagnetic track have garnered significant interest in the field of neuromorphic computing. Although a number of such devices have already been proposed, they require the use of external circuitry to implement several important neuronal behaviors. As such, they are likely to result in either a decrease in energy efficiency, an increase in fabrication complexity, or even both. To resolve this issue, we have proposed three individual neurons that are capable of performing these functionalities without the use of an external circuitry. To implement leaking, the first neuron uses a dipolar coupling field, the second uses an anisotropy gradient, and the third uses shape variations of the DW track.
