Aqueous passivation of multi-principal element alloy Ni 38 Fe 20 Cr 22 Mn 10 Co 10 : Unexpected high Cr enrichment within the passive film

The aqueous passivation of a non-equiatomic Ni 38 Fe 20 Cr 22 Mn 10 Co 10 - at.% (Ni 40 Fe 20 Cr 20 Mn 10 Co 10 - wt.%) multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) was investigated in 0.1 M NaCl at pH 4 and compared to a conventional binary Ni 76 Cr 24 – at.% (Ni 78 Cr 22 – wt.%) alloy. The electrochemical behavior and oxide film characteristics were explored utilizing in-situ electrochemical and ex-situ surface-sensitive techniques. The passive film composition, thickness, and elemental valence states, as well as, the fate of each element were studied by in-situ atomic emission spectro-electrochemistry, ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atom probe tomography. The Ni 38 Fe 20 Cr 22 Mn 10 Co 10 MPEA demonstrated slightly better corrosion resistance compared to the binary Ni 76 Cr 24 , alloy. Passive films on the MPEA contained primarily Cr, and small amounts of Ni, Fe, Co and Mn, while dissolution of Ni, Fe, Co was observed. Ni 0 was enriched at the oxide/metal interface while Cr was depleted. Enrichment of Cr in the passive film occurred to a greater extent in the MPEA than for the Ni-Cr binary alloy. As a result, enrichment factors were determined and the origins of enrichment are discussed.

Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Computational Study on Microsolvated [B 10 H 10 ] 2– Clusters and Comparisons to Their [B 12 H 12 ] 2– Analogues

Microhydrated closo-Boranes have attracted great interests due to their superchaotropic activity related to well-known Hofmeister effect and important applications in biomedical and battery fields. In this work, we report a combined negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical investigation on hydrated closo-decaborate clusters [B 10 H 10 ] 2- ·nH 2 O (n = 1 – 7) with a direct comparison to their analogues [B 12 H 12 ] 2- ·nH 2 O and free water clusters. A single H 2 O molecule is found sufficient to stabilize the intrinsically unstable [B 10 H 10 ] 2- dianion. The first two water molecules strongly interact with the solute forming B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonds while additional water molecules show substantially reduced binding energies. Unlike [B 12 H 12 ] 2- ·nH 2 O possessing highly structured water network with the attached H 2 O molecules arranged in a unified pattern by maximizing B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonding, distinct structural arrangements of the water clusters within [B 10 H 10 ] 2– ·nH 2 O are achieved with the water cluster networks from trimer to heptamer resembling free water clusters. Such a distinct difference arises from the variations in size, symmetry, and charge distributions between these two dianions. Finally, the present finding again confirms the structural diversity of hydrogen-bonding networks in microhydrated closo-boranes and enrich our understanding of aqueous borate chemistry.

Effects of Glymes on the Distribution of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) and Mg(B 12 H 12 ) from the Thermolysis of Mg(BH 4 ) 2

We examined the effects of concentrations and identities of various glymes, from monoglyme up to tetraglyme, on H 2 release from the thermolysis of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 at 160–200 °C for 8 h. 11 B NMR analysis shows major products of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) and Mg(B 12 H 12 ); however, their relative ratio is highly dependent both on the identity and concentration of the glyme to Mg(BH 4 ) 2 . Selective formation of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) was observed with an equivalent of monoglyme and 0.25 equivalent of tetraglyme. However, thermolysis of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 in the presence of stoichiometric or greater equivalent of glymes can lead to unselective formation of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) and Mg(B 12 H 12 ) products or inhibition of H 2 release.

Design Initiative for a 10 TeV pCM Wakefield Collider

This document outlines a community-driven Design Study for a 10 TeV pCM Wakefield Accelerator Collider. The 2020 ESPP Report emphasized the need for Advanced Accelerator R&D, and the 2023 P5 Report calls for the ``delivery of an end-to-end design concept, including cost scales, with self-consistent parameters throughout." This Design Study leverages recent experimental and theoretical progress resulting from a global R&D program in order to deliver a unified, 10 TeV Wakefield Collider concept. Wakefield Accelerators provide ultra-high accelerating gradients which enables an upgrade path that will extend the reach of Linear Colliders beyond the electroweak scale. Here, we describe the organization of the Design Study including timeline and deliverables, and we detail the requirements and challenges on the path to a 10 TeV Wakefield Collider.

Shock-induced phase transitions and stacking fault formation in additively manufactured eutectic high-entropy alloy Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2

Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2 additively manufactured using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is among the toughest as-built alloys reported and is a promising candidate for use in extreme environments. However, its behavior under multi-megabar pressure regimes remains unexplored. We used femtosecond in situ X-ray diffraction to investigate the shock response of LPBF Ni40Co20Fe10Cr10Al18W2 under laser-driven shock compression and release. Our results reveal that the initial dual-phase face-centered + body-centered structure transforms to a single face-centered phase over a wide pressure range of 84±10 to 277±55 GPa, followed by a transition to a single body-centered phase at 431±48 GPa. We establish the Hugoniot equation-of-state of LPBF Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2 and compare it to the benchmark alloy AlCoCrFeNi 2.1 , demonstrating the effects of W-doping and increased Al content. High stacking fault probabilities, close to those measured in Au and Ag, are observed upon compression. A portion of the stacking faults are annihilated upon release to ambient pressure.

Toward full simulations for a liquid metal blanket: part 2. Computations of MHD flows with volumetric heating for a PbLi blanket prototype at Ha ~10 4 and Gr ~10 12

On the pathway toward full simulations for a liquid metal (LM) blanket, this part 2 extends a previous study of purely magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows in a DCLL blanket in reference Chen et al (2020 Nucl. Fusion 60 076003) to more general conditions when the MHD flow is coupled with heat transfer. The simulated prototypic blanket module includes all components of a real LM blanket system, such as supply ducts, inlet and outlet manifolds, multiple poloidal ducts and a U-turn zone. Volumetric heating generated by fusion neutrons is added to simulate thermal effects in the flowing lead–lithium (PbLi) breeder. The MHD flow equations and the energy equation are solved with a DNS-type finite-volume code ‘MHD-UCAS’ on a very fine mesh of 470 × 10 6 cells. The applied magnetic field is 5 T (Hartmann number Ha ~ 10 4 ), the PbLi velocity in the poloidal ducts is 10 cm s –1 (Reynolds number Re ~10 5 ), whereas the maximum volumetric heating is 30 MW m –3 (Grashof number Gr ~ 10 12 ). Four cases have been simulated, including forced- and mixed-convection flows, and either an electrically conducting or insulating blanket structure. Various comparisons are made between the four computed cases and also against the purely MHD flows computed earlier in reference Chen et al (2020 Nucl. Fusion 60 076003) with regards to the (1) MHD pressure drop, (2) flow balancing, (3) temperature field, (4) flows in particular blanket components, and (5) 3D and turbulent flow effects. The strongest buoyancy effects were found in the poloidal ducts. In the electrically non-conducting blanket, the buoyancy forces lead to significant modifications of the flow structure, such as formation of reverse flows, whereas their effect on the MHD pressure drop is relatively small. In the electrically conducting blanket case, the buoyancy effects on the flow and MHD pressure drop are almost negligible.

Anisotropy of cosmic rays of energy 10 (15) eV to 10 (17) eV observed at Akeno

Anisotropy of cosmic rays is studied with extensive air showers (EAS) data by muon trigger. The present results support those obtained by electron trigger which suggest the significant anisotropy of second harmonics with phase around 100 deg in right ascension for showers of 10 to the 16th power - 10 to the 17th power eV, and predominant arrival direction of 230 deg in right ascension for muon-rich showers. It seems that the phase of the first harmonics in the energy range below 10 to the 11th power eV is about 300 deg in right ascension and the second harmonics near 6 x 10 to the 14th power eV is statistically significant with an amplitude of 0.39 + or - 0.13% in direction of 83 + or - 10 deg in right ascension.

Evolution of {delta}ferrite in a CF3 cast stainless steel upon neutron irradiation to 3, 5, 10, 20, and 40 dpa

The microstructural evolution of delta ferrite in a CF3 cast stainless steel irradiated to 3, 5, 10, 20, and 40 dpa with two dose rates was studied with atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron mi-croscopy. Spinodal decomposition and G-phase precipitates induced by neutron irradiation and thermal aging were quantified systematically. The neutron irradiation significantly enhances the spinodal decom-position in delta ferrite as both the spinodal wavelength (i.e. a characteristic repeat distance) and am-plitude (i.e. magnitude of elemental concentration fluctuation) increase after irradiation. The wavelength only varies slightly when the dose increases from 5 to 40 dpa, while the amplitude increases dramatically from 10 to 20 dpa and starts to saturate before 20 dpa. The dose rate and irradiation temperature also have a notable effect on the spinodal wavelength and amplitude. The study shows that higher dose rate promotes a larger wavelength at given irradiation doses. Regarding the G-phase precipitates, a slightly lower irradiation temperature would result in a smaller mean size of G-phase precipitates, while a lower irradiation dose rate would lead to a larger G-phase precipitates at a given temperature and dose. Over-all, the spinodal decomposition and G-phase precipitates in the delta ferrite continue to evolve with the increasing dose beyond 10 dpa. This study confirms that the formation of G-phase precipitates at the in-terdomain region between alpha and alpha-prime is facilitated by the Si and Mo atoms rejected from Fe rich alpha phase and the Ni and Mn atoms rejected from Cr rich alpha-prime phase. Neutron irradiation plays a dominant role in the ferrite instability, and the effect of prior thermal aging at 400 degrees C for 10,000 hours is negligible as the dose is 3 dpa and above.

Features of ion generation by a picosecond laser in the range of 10 11 –10 13 W cm -2 power densities

Picosecond lasers (ps-lasers) have significant advantages for the generation of low charge state ions compared to nanosecond lasers because the influence of heat conductivity on a solid target is almost negligible in the case of ps-laser ablation for laser pulse durations less than 10 ps. However, there is no comprehensive data on ion yields for different elements and target irradiation conditions for laser power densities at the target surface around and below 10 13 W cm –2 , which is of interest to our study of such plasmas as a source of low charge state ions for various applications, particularly for external injection of those ions into an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS). We investigated ion generation from Al, Ti, Cu, Nb and Ta target elements by a ps-laser with power densities in the range of 10 11 –10 13 W cm –2 at the target surface. A ps-laser with 1.27 mJ maximum energy within an 8 ps pulse and repetition rate up to 400 Hz has been used to generate a laser-ablated plasma. Dependencies of ion current versus time, total charge of registered ions as well as ion kinetic energy distributions are characterized using a Faraday cup. Significant difference in ion current dynamics between first, second and following shots onto the same target spot was found for all five target elements. The total charge of ions registered by the Faraday cup increases linearly with increasing laser pulse energy and is almost independent of the target element and number of shots onto the same target spot for all five target elements studied. The results obtained give us a basis for specification and design of the source of low charge state ions for external injection into EBIS.

Low fractional volume superconductivity in single crystals of Pr{sub 4}Ni{sub 3}O{sub 10} under pressure

Magnetotransport measurements of P⁢r4⁢N⁢i3⁢O10 single crystals performed under externally applied pressures up to 73 GPa in diamond anvil cells with either KBr or Nujol oil as pressure media yield signatures of superconductivity with a maximum onset temperature of approximately 31 K. True zero resistance was not observed, consistent with a nonpercolating superconducting volume fraction. Magnetization measurements provided corroborating evidence of superconductivity, with a pressure-dependent diamagnetic signal occurring below the onset temperature, and an estimate from the absolute value of the susceptibility suggests a superconducting volume fraction on the order of 10%. We observe sample to sample variations in the magnitude and pressure dependence of 𝑇𝑐 as well as a dependence on the configuration of electrical contacts on a given sample. Possible causes of this behavior may be significant inhomogeneities in the pressure and/or damage to the samples induced by the pressure media as well as inhomogeneities in the crystals themselves. The results imply that our as-grown P⁢r4⁢N⁢i3⁢O10 single crystals are not bulk superconductors but that there is a minority structure present within the crystals that is indeed superconductin

Direct measurement of the muonic content of extensive air showers between 2 $\times$ 10 17 and 2 $\times$ 10 18 eV at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory allows for the measurement of the properties of extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. By using an array of prototype underground muon detectors, we have performed the first direct measurement, by the Auger Collaboration, of the muon content of air showers between 2 $\times$ 10 17 and 2 $\times$ 10 18 eV. We have studied the energy evolution of the attenuation-corrected muon density, and compared it to predictions from air shower simulations. The observed densities are found to be larger than those predicted by models. We quantify this discrepancy by combining the measurements from the muon detector with those from the Auger fluorescence detector at 10 17.5 eV and 10 18 eV. We find that, for the models to explain the data, an increase in the muon density of 38% $±$4%(12%) $±^{21\%}_{18\%}$ for EPOS-LHC, and of 50%(53%) $±$4%(13%) $±^{23\%}_{20\%}$ for QGSJETII-04, is respectively needed.

The Evaluation of (1R,4R,7R,10R)-α,α′,α″,α‴-Tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic Acid (DOTMA) as a Chelator for Zirconium-89

Recently, macrocycles such as 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) have been observed to form zirconium-89 (89Zr: t½ = 78.4 h, β+: 22.8%, Eβ+max = 901 keV; EC: 77%, Eγ = 909 keV)-complexes with excellent in vivo stability. In this report, we describe (1R,4R,7R,10R)-α,α′,α″,α‴-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTMA) as an 89Zr chelator. Using [89Zr]ZrCl4, [89Zr]Zr-DOTMA was prepared in 99% radiochemical yield and a molar activity of 1055 ± 6 MBq/µmol. In vitro studies revealed a LogP value of −2.97± 0.02 and a radiometal complex that was inert when challenged with 1000-fold excess EDTA or high concentrations of biologically relevant metal ions. Finally, biodistribution studies revealed that the radiometal complex demonstrated in vivo behavior that was like [89Zr]Zr-DOTA and superior to [89Zr]Zr-DFO. Despite these promising observations, the elevated temperature required to form the [89Zr]Zr-DOTMA complex and the lack of derivatives available for bioconjugation will require additional ligand engineering to improve its utility for future nuclear medicine applications.

Composition of primary cosmic rays at energies 10(15) to approximately 10(16) eV

The sigma epsilon gamma spectrum in 1 approx. 5 x 1000 TV observed at Mt. Fuji suggests that the flux of primary protons 10 to the 15 approx 10th eV is lower by a factor of 2 approx. 3 than a simple extrapolation from lower energies; the integral proton spectrum tends to be steeper than around to the power V and the spectral index tends to be steeper than Epsilon to the -17th power around 10 to the 14th power eV and the spectral index becomes approx. 2.0 around 10 to the 15th power eV. If the total flux of primary particles has no steepening up to approx 10 to the 15th power eV, than the fraction of primary protons to the total flux should be approx 20% in contrast to approx 45% at lower energies.

Monte Carlo simulation of EAS generated by 10(14) - 10(16) eV protons

Detailed Monte Carlo simulations of extensive air showers to be detected by the Homestake Surface Underground Telescope and other similar detectors located at sea level and mountain altitudes have been performed for 10 to the 14th power to 10 to the 16th power eV primary energies. The results of these Monte Carlo calculations will provide an opportunity to compare the experimental data with different models for the composition and spectra of primaries and for the development of air showers. The results obtained for extensive air showers generated by 10 to the 14th power to 10 to the 16th power eV primary protons are reported.

Low-Pressure Capability of NASA Glenn's 10- by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel Expanded

Extremely low dynamic pressure Q conditions are desired for space-related research including the testing of parachute designs and other decelerator concepts for future vehicles landing on Mars. Therefore, the low-pressure operating capability of the Abe Silverstein 10- by 10-foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel (10 10 SWT) at NASA Glenn Research Center was recently increased. Successful checkout tests performed in the fall of 2002 showed significantly reduced minimum operating pressures in the wind tunnel.

Parametric Inlet Tested in Glenn's 10- by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel

The Parametric Inlet is an innovative concept for the inlet of a gas-turbine propulsion system for supersonic aircraft. The concept approaches the performance of past inlet concepts, but with less mechanical complexity, lower weight, and greater aerodynamic stability and safety. Potential applications include supersonic cruise aircraft and missiles. The Parametric Inlet uses tailored surfaces to turn the incoming supersonic flow inward toward an axis of symmetry. The terminal shock spans the opening of the subsonic diffuser leading to the engine. The external cowl area is smaller, which reduces cowl drag. The use of only external supersonic compression avoids inlet unstart--an unsafe shock instability present in previous inlet designs that use internal supersonic compression. This eliminates the need for complex mechanical systems to control unstart, which reduces weight. The conceptual design was conceived by TechLand Research, Inc. (North Olmsted, OH), which received funding through NASA s Small-Business Innovation Research program. The Boeing Company (Seattle, WA) also participated in the conceptual design. The NASA Glenn Research Center became involved starting with the preliminary design of a model for testing in Glenn s 10- by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel (10 10 SWT). The inlet was sized for a speed of Mach 2.35 while matching requirements of an existing cold pipe used in previous inlet tests. The parametric aspects of the model included interchangeable components for different cowl lip, throat slot, and sidewall leading-edge shapes and different vortex generator configurations. Glenn researchers used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools for three-dimensional, turbulent flow analysis to further refine the aerodynamic design.

The STRong lensing Insights into the Dark Energy Survey (STRIDES) 2017/2018 follow-up campaign: discovery of 10 lensed quasars and 10 quasar pairs

Here, we report the results of the STRong lensing Insights into the Dark Energy Survey (STRIDES) follow-up campaign of the late 2017/early 2018 season. We obtained spectra of 65 lensed quasar candidates with ESO Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera 2 on the NTT and Echellette Spectrograph and Imager on Keck, confirming 10 new lensed quasars and 10 quasar pairs. Eight lensed quasars are doubly imaged with source redshifts between 0.99 and 2.90, one is triply imaged (DESJ0345-2545, z = 1.68), and one is quadruply imaged (quad: DESJ0053-2012, z = 3.8). Singular isothermal ellipsoid models for the doubles, based on high-resolution imaging from SAMI on Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope or Near InfraRed Camera 2 on Keck, give total magnifications between 3.2 and 5.6, and Einstein radii between 0.49 and 1.97 arcsec. After spectroscopic follow-up, we extract multi-epoch grizY photometry of confirmed lensed quasars and contaminant quasar + star pairs from DES data using parametric multiband modelling, and compare variability in each system’s components. By measuring the reduced χ 2 associated with fitting all epochs to the same magnitude, we find a simple cut on the less variable component that retains all confirmed lensed quasars, while removing 94 per cent of contaminant systems. Based on our spectroscopic follow-up, this variability information improves selection of lensed quasars and quasar pairs from 34-45 per cent to 51–70 per cent, with most remaining contaminants being star-forming galaxies. Using mock lensed quasar light curves we demonstrate that selection based only on variability will over-represent the quad fraction by 10 per cent over a complete DES magnitude-limited sample, explained by the magnification bias and hence lower luminosity/more variable sources in quads.

Dicarbonyl[10,10-dimethyl-5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)biladiene]ruthenium(II): discovery of the first ruthenium tetrapyrrole cis -dicarbonyl complex by X-ray and electron diffraction

Dicarbonyl[10,10-dimethyl-5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)biladiene]ruthenium(II), [Ru(C 33 H 16 F 10 N 4 )(CO) 2 ] or Ru(CO) 2 [DMBil1], is the first reported ruthenium(II) cis-dicarbonyl tetrapyrrole complex. The neutral complex sports two carbonyls and an oligotetrapyrrolic biladiene ligand. Notably, the biladiene adopts a coordination geometry that is well distorted from square planar and much more closely approximates a seesaw arrangement. Accordingly, Ru(CO) 2 [DMBil1] is not only the first ruthenium cis-dicarbonyl with a tetrapyrrole ligand, but also the first metal biladiene complex in which the tetrapyrrole does not adopt a (pseudo-)square-planar coordination geometry. Ru(CO) 2 [DMBil1] is weakly luminescent, displaying λ em = 552 nm upon excitation at λ ex = 500 nm, supports two reversible 1 e – reductions at –1.45 and –1.73 V (versus Fc + /Fc), and has significant absorption features at 481 and 531 nm, suggesting suitability for photocatalytic and photosensitization applications. While the structure of Ru(CO) 2 [DMBil1] was initially determined by X-ray diffraction, a traditionally acceptable quality structure could not be obtained (despite multiple attempts) because of consistently poor crystal quality. Furthermore, an independent structure obtained from electron diffraction experiments corroborates the structure of this unusual biladiene complex.
