Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials as polymerization catalysts: a review and recent advances

Synthetic polymers are ubiquitous across both the industrial and consumer segments of the world economy. Catalysts enable rapid, efficient, selective, and even stereoselective, formation of desired polymers from any of a host of candidate monomers. While numerous molecular catalysts have been shown to be effective for these reactions, separation of the catalysts from reaction products is typically difficult – a potentially problematic complication that suggests instead the use of heterogeneous catalysts. Many of the most effective heterogeneous catalysts, however, comprise supported collections of reaction centres that are decidedly nonuniform in their composition, siting, and activity. Nonuniformity complicates atomic-scale evaluation of the basis for catalytic activity and thus impedes scientific hypothesis-driven understanding and development of superior catalysts. In view of the fundamental desirability of structural and chemical uniformity at the meso, nano, and even atomic scale, crystallographically well-defined, high-porosity metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention as model catalysts and/or catalyst-supports for a wide variety of chemical transformations. In the realm of synthetic polymers, catalyst-functionalized MOFs have been studied for reactions ranging from coordination-mediated polymerization of ethylene to visible-light initiated radical polymerizations. Nevertheless, many polymerization reactions remain to be explored – and, no doubt, will be explored, given the remarkable structural and compositional diversity of attainable MOFs. Noteworthy emerging studies include work directed toward more sophisticated catalytic schemes such as polymer templating using MOF pore architectures and tandem copolymerizations using MOF-supported reaction centres. Finally, it is appropriate to recognize that MOFs themselves are synthetic polymers – albeit, uncoventional ones.

Spectroscopic characterization of a new Re(i) tricarbonyl complex with a thiosemicarbazone derivative: towards sensing and electrocatalytic applications

This work describes the preparation of a new thiosemicarbazone derivative, (Z)- N -ethyl-2-(6-oxo-1,10-phenanthrolin-5(6 H )-ylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (phet) and its respective Re( I ) tricarbonyl chloro complex, fac -[ReCl(CO) 3 (phet)]. The spectroscopic, photophysical and electrochemical properties of the new complex were fully investigated through steady state and time-resolved techniques along with computational calculations. In fac -[ReCl(CO) 3 (phet)], the new ligand is coordinated to the metal center through the pyridyl rings of the phenanthroline moiety. The unbound electron pairs in the S atom of the bending thiosemicarbazone group induce new low energy lying electronic transitions. Consequently, enhanced visible light absorption up to 550 nm is observed in acetonitrile due to the overlap between MLCT Re→phet and IL phet(n→π*) transitions. The absorption bands and emission quantum yields of fac -[ReCl(CO) 3 (phet)] are sensitive to proton concentration due to an acid-basic equilibrium in the N atoms of the thiosemicarbazone. Proton dissociation constants of 10.0 ± 0.1 and 11.4 ± 0.2 were determined respectively for the ground and excited states of the new complex. Spectral changes could also be observed in the presence of Zn 2+ cations which can be further explored for sensing applications. The electrochemical behavior of the new complex was studied in detail, revealing up to four one electron reduction processes in the range from 0 to -2.4 V vs. Fc + /Fc. With support of DFT calculations, the first three processes are ascribed to the reduction of the coordinated phet ligand followed by the Re I/0 reduction and consequent Cl - release. Furthermore, the new complex was able to act as an electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction into CO ( E onset = -1.92 V vs. Fc + /Fc), with a turnover frequency of 2.81 s -1 and turnover number of 24 ± 1 in anhydrous acetonitrile, being the first Re( I ) tricarbonyl complex with a thiosemicarbazone derivative described for this goal. The detailed characterization carried out here can drive the development of new Re( I )-thiosemicarbazone derivatives for different applications.

Accessing the triplet manifold of naphthalene benzimidazole–phenanthroline in rhenium(i) bichromophores

In this work, the steady-state and ultrafast to supra-nanosecond excited state dynamics of fac-[Re(NBI-phen)(CO) 3 (L)](PF 6 ) (NBI-phen = 16H-benzo[4',5']isoquinolino[2',1':1,2]imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-16-one) as well as their respective models of the general molecular formula [Re(phen)(CO) 3 (L)](PF 6 ) (L = PPh 3 and CH 3 CN) has been investigated using transient absorption and time-gated photoluminescence spectroscopy. The NBI-phen containing molecules exhibited enhanced visible light absorption with respect to their models and a rapid formation (<6 ns) of the triplet ligand-centred (LC) excited state of the organic ligand, NBI-phen. These triplet states exhibit an extended excited state lifetime that enable the energized molecules to readily engage in triplet–triplet annihilation photochemistry.

Alkaline salt-promoted construction of hydrophilic and nitrogen deficient graphitic carbon nitride with highly improved photocatalytic efficiency

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) possesses fascinating merits, but its practical applications are limited by the inferior properties of limited visible-light sorption, rapid recombination of photo-excited charge carriers and low electrical conductivity. Introduction of N-defects is an efficient approach to tune its optical properties, but strategies capable of creating abundant vacancies and simultaneously maintaining the highly crystalline architecture are still limited and highly desired. In this work, a facile construction methodology was demonstrated to afford g-C 3 N 4 with abundant N vacancies, high crystallinity, a hydrophilic surface structure, a small particle size, and an increased surface area under neat and mild conditions. Furthermore, the essence of our approach lies in the treatment of the bulk g-C 3 N 4 precursor with an alkaline salt (LiN(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) with a low melting point, moderate nucleophilicity, and easy removal procedures. The unique structural properties of the afforded ND-g-C 3 N 4 allow for a significantly redshifted absorption edge and enhanced charge carrier separation, leading to superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance three times that obtained by pristine g-C 3 N 4 . The modification strategy developed herein sheds light on the fabrication of g-C 3 N 4 -based materials with improved photocatalytic efficiency via efficient introduction of N defects, variation of the surface structure, and retention of the high crystallinity.

Insights into the extraction of photogenerated holes from CdSe/CdS nanorods for oxidative organic catalysis

Using aerobic oxidative coupling of thiophenol in organic media as a model reaction, we show that photogenerated holes in CdSe/CdS core–shell nanorods can be efficiently extracted. As a result, CdSe/CdS nanorods can serve as an efficient visible-light photocatalyst at a very low concentration (~1.5 × 10 -4 mol%). We show that primary amines play an important role in the transformation of thiols into disulfides by forming a soluble thiolate in nonpolar solvent. Using time-resolved optical spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that thiolate can efficiently extract the photogenerated holes from CdSe/CdS nanorods and transform into disulfide in organic solvent. Overall, our data indicate that there are two reaction pathways responsible for S–S coupling of thiolate upon illumination of CdSe/CdS nanorods. We demonstrate that instead of scavenging of photogenerated holes by sacrificial species for prevention of photo corrosion of CdSe/CdS nanorods, the photogenerated holes can be efficiently used for oxidative organic synthesis.

Electron–phonon interaction and ultrafast photoemission from doped monolayer MoS 2

We have examined the effect of electron–phonon coupling on photoluminescence and ultrafast response of electron doped monolayer MoS2, using a combination of density functional theory, time dependent density functional theory, and many-body theory. For small doping (~1–3%) of interest here, the electron–phonon coupling parameter is modest (~0.1–0.2) but its effect on the emissive properties and response of the system to femtosecond (fs) laser pulses is striking. We find an ultrafast (fs) relaxation of the electronic subsystem as well as a high fluence of visible light emission induced by electron phonon interaction. Together with high carrier mobility, these features of monolayer MoS2 may be relevant for optoelectronic technologies.

Unveiling the mechanism of the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to formate promoted by porphyrinic Zr-based metal–organic frameworks

A complete picture of the reaction mechanism responsible for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 into formate promoted by the Zr-based porphyrinic MOF-545 (PCN-222) in acetonitrile/triethanolamine (CH 3 CN/TEOA) solutions is provided for the first time by combining experimental and computational approaches. Firstly, we combined the metalation of the porphyrin linkers and the synthesis under microwave conditions of nano-sized materials (150–200 nm) to reach one of the highest CO 2 RR activities under visible light irradiation reported so far for a MOF-based catalyst in terms of formate production (identified in all cases as the sole product), i.e., 6000 μmol g –1 after 4 h for the NanoMOF-545(Fe). A thorough mechanistic study of CO 2 RR is provided afterwards, which elucidated the respective roles of TEOA, porphyrin linkers and Zr 6 -nodes. Photophysical measurements of both metalated and unmetalated MOFs excluded the prevailing belief of ligand-to-Zr 6 cluster charge-transfer state formation, while bulk photolysis proved that the porphyrinic linkers of the MOF promote the photooxidation of TEOA under catalytic conditions. DFT calculations allowed characterization with atomistic detail of a novel reaction mechanism whereby TEOA˙ radicals generated photochemically at the porphyrinic linkers play the crucial role of transferring a formal hydride to a CO 2 molecule activated on a Zr IV center, which acts as a Lewis acid. Notably, this mechanism backed by additional experimental assays explains the experimental activity trends observed upon metalation, on the basis of the ability of the materials to accomplish the photo-oxidation of TEOA. Here, while elucidating the reaction pathways at work in Zr 6 -based MOFs with chromophore linkers, the findings reported herein pinpoint new mechanistic features capable of rationalizing other light-driven reactions making use of TEOA (or structurally related donors) and ultimately, inspire the bottom-up design of new catalysts and catalytic routes.

Photo-accelerated oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD for efficient carbon-based perovskite solar cells

Metal halide perovskite thin film solar cell (PSC) technology demonstrates promising power conversion efficiency and paves the way to commercialization. So far, the best device performance originates from the n-i-p structure with FTO/SnO 2 /perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au device architecture. Traditionally, to achieve high efficiency, several hours of oxidization of a Li-doped Spiro-OMeTAD hole transport layer (HTL) is necessary, which hinders the application of Spiro-OMeTAD for rapid large-scale manufacturing. In particular, the oxidization process significantly relies on ambient conditions, including oxygen and moisture levels. In this work, we report a fast technique to accomplish rapid oxidation in several mins of Spiro-OMeTAD HTL in perovskite solar cells by illuminating in visible light with one Sunlight intensity (100 mW cm −2 ). Compared to the traditional approach, our photo-accelerated oxidization of Spiro-OMeTAD approach can deliver a high-power conversion efficiency. We employ this photo-accelerated oxidization for the planar carbon-based perovskite solar cell and achieve a champion device efficiency of 17.47%. This strategy overcomes the barriers for a simple and rapid means toward mass manufacturing and industrial applications by utilizing Spiro-OMeTAD as the HTL for the perovskite solar module.

Wavelength dependent photochemistry of an iron dinitrogen hydride complex via multiple spectroscopies – competing ejection of axial ligands

Nitrogenase (N 2 ase) is a critical enzyme which catalyzes the reaction of N 2 → NH 3 in nature. Studies on the spectroscopy and photochemistry of trans-[Fe II (DMeOPrPE) 2 (N 2 )H][BPh 4 ] (1) and its isotopologues (2–6) provide a possible first step to evaluate the geometries and properties of the real N 2 ase–N 2 structure(s). In this article, we have used FT-IR, FT-Raman, synchrotron-based nuclear resonant vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) and DFT calculations to examine and assign the normal modes of these complexes. In addition, we have monitored their wavelength dependent photochemistry using mid-IR, near-IR, NRVS, and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Two distinct photolysis pathways are observed with mid-IR at (nominal) 4 K – (1) the cleavage of Fe–N 2 bond in UV or visible light photolyses, which presents a unipolar disappearance of the N 2 peak at 2094 cm −1 and is recombinable; (2) the ejection of trans hydrogen atom with UV irradiation, which has a pair of bipolar peaks with the disappearance of N 2 at 2094 cm −1 and the appearance of a new species at 2056 cm −1 and is non-recombinable. The latter peak is well aligned with the N 2 peak in an Fe I reference complex (7). The combination of mid IR monitored photolysis/recombination and NRVS monitored photolysis form the central evidence for the conclusions in this article. In particular, the Fe II –N 2 and Fe I –H·dissociations are in competition with each other in UV or UV-inclusive photolyses of this dinitrogen hydride complex. In addition, near-IR and Mössbauer also provide consistent evidence about Fe I . This wavelength dependent photochemical work is the first one on a reaction active N 2 ase–N 2 model complex and it also demonstrates the competition ejection between two axial ligands (H· and N 2 ). It offers valuable information for future studies on real N 2 ase–N 2 and its photolysis products.

ZnGa 2 Te 4 thin-film absorbers for photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) has been considered as a promising route to convert and store solar energy into chemical fuels. It is crucial to find suitable photoelectrode materials that are photo-catalytically active and exhibit excellent photochemical stability. One of the promising contenders is ZnTe with the ∼2.26 eV band gap and prolonged stability under CO 2 RR PEC conditions. Herein, a new telluride based thin-film ZnGa 2 Te 4 photocathode with lower band gap and stronger visible light absorption compared to ZnTe is synthesized and characterized using a combinatorial sputtering technique. A two-step annealing method with excess Te supply is implemented to synthesize nearly stoichiometric ZnGa 2 Te 4 absorber material with a zincblende-derived tetragonal crystal structure confirmed by synchrotron X-ray and electron diffraction. Theoretical calculations show that ZnGa 2 Te 4 has suitable direct bandgap (∼1.86 eV) and high absorption coefficient ∼10 5 cm −1 , in agreement with experimentally prepared films. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals the biexponential decay dynamics, with time constants, τ 1 ∼ 0.04, and τ 2 ∼ 0.65 μs in microsecond time scales and provides the optical transition pathways for this semiconductor thin film. PEC measurements show that the ZnGa 2 Te 4 photocurrent densities are comparable to the widely investigated ZnTe photocathodes or even surpass it under simulated sunlight condition. ZnGa 2 Te 4 samples demonstrate promising photoelectrochemical stability, maintaining consistent performance under illumination. The inclusion of diaryliodonium additive substantially increases its CO 2 RR selectivity to ∼60%. These findings open a new avenue for the synthesis of telluride-based thin-film photocathodes for further exploration and will motivate future research to integrate this potential photocathode material into PEC devices.

Alkali triel chalcogenide nanocrystals: a molecular reactivity approach to ternary phase selectivity

Alkali-metal-based materials are promising building blocks for energy conversion and storage technologies. Here, we use a molecular reactivity-based solution-phase approach to selectively synthesize multiple phases and specific polymorphs of lithium- and sodium-containing triel chalcogenide nanocrystals, LiTrCh 2 , NaTrCh 2 , and NaTr 3 Ch 5 , where Tr = Ga and In and Ch = S, Se, and Te. Analogous to the case of binary II–VI and III–V tetrahedral semiconductors, where the two commonly isolated zinc blende and wurtzite polymorphs are separated by only 1–50 meV f.u. −1 , we find that LiTrCh 2 nanocrystals easily adopt tetragonal (chalcopyrite) and orthorhombic polymorphs separated by only 2.7–6.2 meV f.u. −1 Because of this small energy difference, soft colloidal synthesis succeeds in accessing either one of these polymorphs, depending on the specific dichalcogenide precursor used. Highly reactive diethyl diselenide favors the thermodynamically more stable tetragonal I$\bar{4}2$d phase, whereas mildly reactive diphenyl diselenide favors the kinetic, metastable orthorhombic Pna2 1 phase. Density functional theory calculations confirm the relative energies among multiple LiTrCh 2 polymorphs and also model the observed powder X-ray diffraction pattern of a new C2 NaIn 3 Te 5 phase. 7 Li, 69 Ga, and 77 Se solid-state NMR spectra are consistent with phase-pure ternary LiGaSe 2 nanocrystals. A majority of the nanocrystal compositions are visible-light emitters. This work opens the door to new Li/Na-based ternary triel chalcogenide nanostructures for energy storage and conversion applications.
