Health Analysis and Research for Public Events (HARPE) Tool (Final CRADA Report)

Based on its experience in building assessment tools, Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) has demonstrated expertise in developing comparative methodologies and question sets that provide both a physical and cyber-based risk assessment for the commercial facilities sector. A high-level risk assessment tool can be beneficial for venues and organizations that fall under a wide array of facility characterizations, ultimately accommodating the evolving landscape of threats specific to these facilities. The Health Analysis and Research for Public Events (HARPE) Tool is an assessment that seeks to help facility managers assess and mitigate aspects of safety, security, and emergency management within their venues. With the pandemic featuring prominently in today’s landscape, we have adapted and extended the scope of the HARPE tool so that it offers users the ability to integrate assessments of their preparation for, response to, and recovery from threats faced at the venue arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditional threats and hazards remain prevalent in today’s landscape, and the best defense is a proactive approach to preventing and mitigating these threats. At the very core of prevention and mitigation is the first step of conducting a risk assessment—this is the gap that HARPE fills. While it is obvious that the response to COVID-19 is health and sanitation driven, leaders within the commercial facilities sector must also know where to best extend their efforts in mitigating future threats arising from the pandemic. Public events and mass gatherings are directly impacted by COVID-19; however, with the help of HARPE, leaders can focus their attention on core impact areas related to the safety and security of returning to a new normal, as they assess their risks using the Argonne-developed tool. HARPE provides an important solution to the COVID-19 situation by assisting venue managers and health officials in identifying their risks.

AFUE Analysis Software Tool

The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) analysis of residential and light commercial furnaces follows ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 103-2017 (i.e., Method of Testing for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of Residential Central Furnaces and Boilers) . The analysis is a complex, comprehensive method based on furnace configuration and specific components equipped, requiring detailed furnace testing and measurement data. For this reason, an AFUE Analysis Tool using Microsoft Excel enabled with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) was developed with a user-friendly interface and comprehensive coverage. The tool consists of three worksheets: unit and configuration selection, geometry and measurement data input, and AFUE plus key results. This tool can be used to estimate the AFUE of both condensing and noncondensing furnaces with single-stage, two-stage, and step-modulating functions. The tool was validated with experimental data from Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s natural gas furnace projects that are commercially available. The results indicate the tool is reasonably accurate in the evaluation of a new R&D modified furnace unit.

INGRID: An interactive grid generator for 2D edge plasma modeling

A fusion boundary-plasma domain is defined by axisymmetric magnetic surfaces where the geometry is often complicated by the presence of one or more X-points; and modeling boundary plasmas usually relies on computational grids that account for the magnetic field geometry. The new grid generator INGRID (Interactive Grid Generator) presented in this work is a Python-based code for calculating grids for fusion boundary plasma modeling, for a variety of configurations with one or two X-points in the domain. INGRID first performs partitioning over the domain consisting of a small number of patches conforming to the magnetic field and wall geometry; then it generates a subgrid on each of the patches and joins them into a global grid. This domain partitioning strategy makes possible a uniform treatment of various configurations with one or two X-points in the domain. This includes single-null, double-null, and other configurations with two X-points in the domain. The INGRID design allows generating grids either interactively, via a parameter-file driven GUI, or using a non-interactive script-controlled workflow. Results of testing demonstrate that INGRID is a flexible, robust, and user-friendly grid-generation tool for fusion boundary-plasma modeling.

Real-time 3D analysis during electron tomography using tomviz

The demand for high-throughput electron tomography is rapidly increasing in biological and material sciences. However, this 3D imaging technique is computationally bottlenecked by alignment and reconstruction which runs from hours to days. We demonstrate real-time tomography with dynamic 3D tomographic visualization to enable rapid interpretation of specimen structure immediately as data is collected on an electron microscope. Using geometrically complex chiral nanoparticles, we show volumetric interpretation can begin in less than 10 minutes and a high-quality tomogram is available within 30 minutes. Real-time tomography is integrated into tomviz, an open-source and cross-platform 3D data analysis tool that contains intuitive graphical user interfaces (GUI), to enable any scientist to characterize biological and material structure in 3D.

Depletion Benchmark Analysis on a Lead Fast Reactor Using PyARC/OpenMC

PyARC is a user-friendly fast reactor analysis tool that automates multiphysics workflows using the “extended suite” of Argonne Reactor Computation (ARC) codes by providing a single common input for model definition, code execution, and output post-processing. A lead fast reactor (LFR) benchmark model is used to perform depletion calculations using the newly integrated OpenMC depletion capability in PyARC, building on previous analysis using the ARC codes through PyARC and Serpent. Results for core lifetime k-effective, shutdown decay heat, and end-of-life heavy-metal inventory are compared to verify the PyARC/OpenMC integration against the PyARC/ARC workflow and Serpent for depletion analysis of LFR designs. The results show satisfactory agreement among all three methods, with remaining discrepancies largely attributable to differences in nuclear data libraries and decay-chain modeling detail rather than to fundamental modeling limitations.

Real-time streaming tomographic reconstruction with on-demand data capturing and 3D zooming to regions of interest

Complex dynamic tomographic experiments at brilliant X-ray light sources require real-time feedback on the sample changes with respect to environmental conditions, selecting representative regions of interest for high-resolution scanning, and on-demand data saving mechanisms for storing only relevant projections acquired by fast area detectors and reducing data volumes. Here the implementation details of a 3D real-time imaging monitoring instrument, with zooming to a volume of interest with easy-to-use visualization via ImageJ , a tool familiar to most beamline users, is presented. The instrument relies on optimized data flow between the detector and processing machines and is implemented on commodity computers. The instrument has been developed at beamline 2-BM of the Advanced Photon Source, where the automatic lens changing mechanism for zooming is implemented with an Optique Peter microscope. Performance tests demonstrate the ability to process more than 3 GB of projection data per second and generate real-time 3D zooming with different magnification. These new capabilities are essential for new APS Upgrade instruments such as the projection microscope under development at beamline 32-ID. The efficacy of the proposed instrument was demonstrated during an in situ tomographic experiment on ice and gas hydrate formation in porous samples.

WE-Validate: An Open-Source Framework For Wind Power Validation

Grid operators rely on historical weather time series at existing and planned wind power plants to make informed decisions when planning for a future power grid with very high penetration of renewable power. While synthetic wind power time series have been developed based on historical weather models, their validation with actual power production data remains complex due to variations in modeling practices and methodologies. This paper introduces the WE-Validate framework, originally designed for wind speed validation and now enhanced for wind power validation with a graphical user interface to support users with minimal programming experience. Validation of wind power with WE-Validate is based on robust metrics consisting of RMSE, centered RMSE, average bias, average percent bias, mean absolute error, mean absolute percent error, cross correlation, and calculation of ramping magnitude, rate, and duration. This paper showcases WE-Validate with validation of synthetically derived power for a wind plant in Washington state for one month in 2018. Validation of the synthetic power from two comparison data sets compared with observations shows both comparison series have strong correlation with observed across weekly and monthly aggregations while suffering from persistent negative bias. The suite of metrics within WE-Validate facilitates immediate insight into the utility of the comparison data sets through compression across multiple axes. This user-friendly, open-source tool can be extended beyond wind power, making it a valuable resource for system planners and operators in different domains.

Integration of Silica in G4CMP for Phonon Simulations: Framework and Tools for Material Integration

Superconducting detectors with sub-eV energy resolution have demonstrated success setting limits on Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics due to their unique sensitivity to low-energy events. G4CMP, a Geant4-based extension for condensed matter physics, provides a comprehensive toolkit for modeling phonon and charge dynamics in cryogenic materials. This paper introduces a technical formalism to support the superconducting qubit and low-threshold detector community in implementing phonon simulations in custom materials into the G4CMP. As a case study, we present the results of a detailed analysis of silica phonon transport properties relevant for simulating substrate backgrounds in Beryllium Electron capture in Superconducting Tunnel junctions (BeEST)-style experiments using G4CMP. Additionally, Python-based tools were developed to aid users in implementing their own materials and are available on the G4CMP repository.
