Changes in lake status are often interpreted as palaeoclimate indicators due to their dependence on precipitation and evaporation. The Global Lake Status Database (GLSDB) has since long provided a standardised synopsis of qualitative lake status over the last 30,000 14C years. Potential sources of uncertainty however are not recorded in the GLSDB. Here we present an updated and improved relational-database framework that incorporates uncertainty in both chronology and the interpretation of palaeoenvironmental data. The database uses peer-reviewed palaeolimnological studies to produce a consensus on qualitative lake-status histories, whose chronologies are revised and standardized through the recalibration of radiocarbon dates and the application of Bayesian age-depth modelling for stratigraphic archives. Quantitative information on absolute water-level elevation is preserved if available from geomorphological sources. We also propose a new probabilistic analytical framework that accounts for these uncertainties to reconstruct synoptic, integrated environmental signals. The process is based on a Monte Carlo algorithm that iteratively samples individual lake-status histories within the limits of their uncertainties to produce many possible scenarios. We then use Recursively-Subtracted Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis to extract dominant patterns of lake-status variability from these scenarios. As a proof of concept, we apply this framework to 67 sites in eastern and southern Africa whose lake-status histories cover part of the late Pleistocene and/or Holocene. We show that, despite the sometimes large temporal and interpretation uncertainties, and the inclusion of highly discontinuous lake-status time series, identifying the major known millennial-scale climatic phases during the last 20,000 years is possible. Our framework was also able to identify an antiphased response between the lake basins in eastern and interior southern Africa to these changes. Here, we propose that our new database and methodology framework serves as a template for efficient lake-status data synthesis, encourages the incorporation of lake-status data in palaeoclimate syntheses, and expands the possibilities for the use of such data in the evaluation of climate models.
In recent years, options for procuring renewable energy have increased, ranging from rooftop solar installation to utility green pricing to Community Choice Aggregation. These options vary in terms of costs and benefits to the consumer as well as grid integration implications. However, little is known regarding how the presence of a wide range of voluntary utility-scale renewable procurement options as well as their growth could affect adoption of distributed residential solar. To examine this relationship, we fit a two-stage least squares random effects regression model on panel data from 2016 to 2019 for all fifty US states plus the District of Columbia, controlling for variables that measure state-level policies, economic factors, and resource availability. Although there was no evidence of a strong relationship between demand for utility-scale and distributed options across all states, the state-level correlations suggest a wide variation between states including a positive, zero or negative relationship between utility-scale and distributed generation.

Zirconia-based electrochemical sensors have revolutionized oxygen monitoring and combustion control. Here, these robust, solid-state devices are found in virtually every internal combustion engine today providing feedback information for tight air to fuel ratio control thus minimizing unwanted emissions and improving engine efficiency. Variations on the sensor design and operational mode enable the measurement of nitrogen oxides to part per million levels, providing control information for exhaust after-treatment systems. Emerging designs include the development of "gas analyzers on a chip" capable of monitoring oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and hydrocarbons.

Complexes of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl diglycolamide (TMDGA), a hydrophilic diglycolamide (DGA) proposed as an aqueous phase holdback reagent, have been crystallized for the majority of the lanthanide series (excluding promethium), yttrium, and americium to deepen our structural understanding of trivalent metal ion (M 3+ ) DGA coordination compounds in the presence of nitrate counter-anions. The presented collection of 16 complexes with accompanying single-crystal structures, taking formulas [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 6 ] (M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Am), [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)] 1–x [M(NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] x (NO 3 ) 1+x (M = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), [M(TMDGA) 3 ] 2 [M(NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] 0.75 [M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)] 1.25 (NO 3 ) 2.75 ·H 2 O (M = Lu), and [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)](NO 3 )·CH 3 OH (M = Y) were all synthesized via solvent diffusion of reaction mixtures containing the metal nitrate M(NO 3 ) 3 ·nH 2 O and TMDGA. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of these new structures show that each TMDGA complex comprises of three TMDGA ligands coordinating the metal ion via carbonyl and etheric oxygen atoms forming [M(TMDGA) 3 ] 3+ cations. Spectroscopy measurements under high pressure displayed notable differences in the f → f transition shifting between that of Nd(III) and Am(III). Shifting of transitions by 2.0 nm were observed in Nd up to 8.50 ± 0.09 GPa, while Am saw shifting between 11.0 to 13.5 nm at pressures up to 20.06 ± 1.90 GPa. The local geometry in these complexes is a distorted spherical capped square antiprism (CSAPR-9) except for of the yttrium complex, which exhibits a distorted spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic (TCTPR-9) geometry. Further, the anions that form concomitantly with the TMDGA complexes are composed of hexanitrato species for the early lanthanide ions (lanthanum to samarium); whereas the remaining smaller lanthanides did not possess sufficiently large ionic radii to coordinate six bidentate nitrate anions, instead, one or two nitrate anions are situated in the outer sphere. The systematic progression of changes in the anionic environments of these complexes outlines the changing coordination habits afforded by the lanthanide contraction.
