Development of a pixelated BaF 2 test bed for timing applications [Slides]

BaF 2 one of the fastest known scintillators, emitting at 195 & 220 nm with sub-nanosecond decay constant. Fast emission only comprises ~13% of total light. The goal is to develop a prototype BaF 2 detector system with a practical form factor and variable geometry, and characterize system performance for various timing applications.

VCE test bed engine for supersonic cruise research

Various design concepts for a variable cycle engine applicable to a supersonic, mixed mission propulsion system which would combine the merits of a turbofan at subsonic operating conditions with those of a turbojet for supersonic operating conditions are briefly examined. In particular the integration of the variable area bypass injector with the core driven (aft fan block) fan stage is discussed and the technical benefits of the configuration are summarized.

Characterization of point focusing test bed concentrators at JPL

The characterization data were measured using both a flux mapper and a cold water calorimeter. The flux mapper uses a Kendall Radiometer as the sensing device. It is mounted on an x, y, z motor-driven positioning mechanism that allows the sensor to take an x-y flux raster at several Z planes in the vicinity of the concentrators nominal focal plane. Various concepts were tried to protect the concentrator structure from being damaged by the Sun's energy during sun acquisition and deacquisition. A description of both the passive and active protective systems is presented.

Rapid Test Bed Concentrator (TBC) Alignment Techniques

A new, labor and cost saving method was developed to eliminate the procedure of covering all (220) mirrors and uncovering then one-by-one in sequence to adjust each to the focal plane. This latest method being used to align mirrors of a parabolic solar concentrator utilizes a computer-derived target of discreet images made up of individual mirror reflections on a plane in front of the intended, nominal, focal point. Incorporating this computer technique increases accuracy and gives potential to develop flux distributions required by different receiver designs.

A test-bed for space interferometry: Space Platform Interferometer (SPI)

The Space Platform Interferometer (SPI), a 20-m two-mirror Michelson interferometer, which can reach magnitude 14 at UV and visible wavelengths, is described. The SPI is attached to a platform serviced from the space station. In addition to its ability to produce unique science in the UV, SPI is intended to demonstrate the feasibility of larger projects in the field. Dynamical behavior of the structure in the gravity gradient environment and fringe stabilization at low photon rate are studied by picking up an adjacent bin (in the near IR) on the same object and using it to track the white light fringe in a separate differential interferometer. The same subsystem also corrects for tilt. Active control of critical parameters ensures optical rigidity. Performances are evaluated in low orbit.

An autonomous fault detection, isolation, and recovery system for a 20-kHz electric power distribution test bed

Future space explorations will require long term human presence in space. Space environments that provide working and living quarters for manned missions are becoming increasingly larger and more sophisticated. Monitor and control of the space environment subsystems by expert system software, which emulate human reasoning processes, could maintain the health of the subsystems and help reduce the human workload. The autonomous power expert (APEX) system was developed to emulate a human expert's reasoning processes used to diagnose fault conditions in the domain of space power distribution. APEX is a fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR) system, capable of autonomous monitoring and control of the power distribution system. APEX consists of a knowledge base, a data base, an inference engine, and various support and interface software. APEX provides the user with an easy-to-use interactive interface. When a fault is detected, APEX will inform the user of the detection. The user can direct APEX to isolate the probable cause of the fault. Once a fault has been isolated, the user can ask APEX to justify its fault isolation and to recommend actions to correct the fault. APEX implementation and capabilities are discussed.

Propellant production on Mars - Single cell oxygen production test bed

A study focusing on oxygen production using resources indigenous to Mars is presented. A bank of solid zirconia electrolytic cells that will electrochemically separate oxygen from a high temperature stream of carbon dioxide is at the center of the oxygen production system. The experimental data are discussed with attention given to the cell operating temperature, the carbon dioxide flow rate, and the voltage applied across the cell.

Description of the PMAD DC test bed architecture and integration sequence

NASA-Lewis is responsible for the development, fabrication, and assembly of the electric power system (EPS) for the Space Station Freedom (SSF). The SSF power system is radically different from previous spacecraft power systems in both the size and complexity of the system. Unlike past spacecraft power system the SSF EPS will grow and be maintained on orbit and must be flexible to meet changing user power needs. The SSF power system is also unique in comparison with terrestrial power systems because it is dominated by power electronic converters which regulate and control the power. Although spacecraft historically have used power converters for regulation they typically involved only a single series regulating element. The SSF EPS involves multiple regulating elements, two or more in series, prior to the load. These unique system features required the construction of a testbed which would allow the development of spacecraft power system technology. A description is provided of the Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) DC Testbed which was assembled to support the design and early evaluation of the SSF EPS. A description of the integration process used in the assembly sequence is also given along with a description of the support facility.

Regenerative life support systems (RLSS) test bed development at NASA-Johnson Space Center

NASA-Johnson's RLSS testbed employs higher plants in a closed environment, in conjunction with a physicochemically-based life-support system, to create an integrated, biological/physicochemical RLSS. Crew presence is simulated by a human metabolic simulator, and operation is sufficiently automated for crops to be grown from seed to harvest without human intervention. Attention is given to the Variable Pressure Growth Chamber, which will be operable at both ambient atmospheric pressures and at the reduced pressures representative of operations in lunar and Martian environments.
