PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative Final Technical Report (FTR)

Improved analysis and reporting of photovoltaic (PV) field performance increases the certainty of owners and financiers that systems will perform as expected. Advanced module technologies (e.g., PERC, HJT, and bifacial) introduce new degradation mechanisms and performance characteristics. This project will leverage data from the ever-increasing PV fleet to develop models and understanding of the field performance of existing and new technologies. Please see our list of public reports at https://www.nrel.gov/pv/fleet-performance-data-initiative.html. Objective 1: Support the global PV industry with scalable, robust data analysis tools that reduce the uncertainty of PV system performance and loss calculation. Objective 2: Reduce perceived risk arising from degradation rate, soiling loss, and system availability by publishing detailed statistics on U.S. fleet performance. Objective 3: Highlight factors leading to system underperformance including module type, climate, mounting configuration, etc. Objective 4: Enable continued high system performance in modern PV systems, as turnover and advances in technology bring new suppliers and high-efficiency modules into the market.

Development of technology for fluid-structure interaction modeling of a 1/8-scale dynamic model of shuttle External Tank (ET). Volume i: Technical report

A NASTRAN analysis of the external tank (ET) substructure of the 1/8-scale space shuttle structural dynamics model is described. The NASTRAN hydroelastic procedures were used to form a model of the liquid oxygen portion of the ET. Large computer storage requirements and running times were required unless these procedures were modified. Several possibilities were demonstrated including the substitution of the real for the complex eigenvalue routine and the use of the OMIT capability to reduce the number of fluid coordinates. A NASTRAN model of the complete ET was formed and reduced to 252 degrees of freedom. A review of the eigenvector extracted, using the unsymmetrical inverse power method, indicated that the structural OMIT's resulted in unsatisfactory modal deflections. Modifications to the NASTRAN hydroelastic capability appeared necessary to generate a successful ET model. An approach is described which, by assuming incompressibility, reduces the fluid representation to a symmetric mass matrix which can be added to the structural mass. The problem is solved using faster and more efficient eigenvalue routines. Using this approach the ET NASTRAN model was analyzed for three separate weight conditions.

Study for identification of beneficial uses of Space (BUS). Volume 2: Technical report. Book 1: Development and business analysis of space processed isoenzymes

A separation method to provide reasonable yields of high specificity isoenzymes for the purpose of large scale, early clinical diagnosis of diseases and organic damage such as, myocardial infarction, hepatoma, muscular dystrophy, and infectous disorders is presented. Preliminary development plans are summarized. An analysis of required research and development and production resources is included. The costs of such resources and the potential profitability of a commercial space processing opportunity for electrophoretic separation of high specificity isoenzymes are reviewed.

Study for identification of beneficial Uses of Space (BUS). Volume 2: Technical report. Book 3: Development and business analysis of space processed tungsten fox X-ray targets

The development plans, analysis of required R and D and production resources, the costs of such resources, and finally, the potential profitability of a commercial space processing opportunity for containerless melting and resolidification of tungsten are discussed. The aim is to obtain a form of tungsten which, when fabricated into targets for X-ray tubes, provides at least, a 50 percent increase in service life.

Air Transport by Gliders : Some Technical Observations

This short analysis may be useful in determining the real tactical possibilities of "glider trains" and in adopting the course to be followed in possible studies of these questions. In this analysis most prominent are: (a) the power required for the train in level flight; (b) its speed; (c) climb; and (d) the type of airplane best suited for towing as well as design requirements for transport gliders.

Operational and Technical Updates to the Object Reentry Survival Analysis Tool

The Object Reentry Survival Analysis Tool (ORSAT) has been used in the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office for over 25 years to estimate risk due to uncontrolled reentry of spacecraft and rocket bodies. Development over the last 3 years has included: a major change to the treatment of carbon fiber- and glass fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP and GFRP, respectively); an updated atmospheric model; a new model for computing casualty area around an impacting debris object; and a newly-implemented scheme to determine the breakup altitude of a reentry object. Software also was written to automatically perform parameter sweeps in ORSAT to allow for uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis for components with borderline demisability. These updates have improved the speed and fidelity of the reentry analysis performed using ORSAT, and have allowed for improved engineering understanding by estimating the uncertainty for each component’s survivability. A statistical model for initial conditions captures the latitude bias in population density, a large improvement over the previous inclination-based latitude-averaged models. A sample spacecraft has been analyzed with standard techniques using ORSAT 6.2.1 and again using all the updated models; we will demonstrate the variation in the total debris casualty area and overall expectation of casualty.
