Optimizing Residential HVAC Systems: Evaluating How the Usage of Smart Diagnostic Tools for Quality Installation and Commissioning Impacts System Performance and HVAC Contractor Businesses

The adoption of digital quality installation and fault detection tools has the potential to transform the $14 billon residential heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) service and installation industry. Increased market penetration can be accelerated by providing an increased understanding of the energy and economic value proposition of the usage of these tools. In tandem with energy and HVAC system performance impact research and analysis, the Southface Team investigated the economic business implications for HVAC service and installation contractors adopting the use of measureQuick (mQ), a smart diagnostic app that aids in quality installation and fault detection and works agnostically with Bluetooth-enabled HVAC technician tools.

Heating Ventilation Air-Conditioning (HVAC) System Analysis and Optimization for Revit with the OpenStudio Analytical Framework (CRADA Final Report)

This project proposes to integrate the NREL-developed OpenStudio (OS) and its accompanying Analytical Framework (OSAF) into Autodesk’s (ADSK’s) market leading suite of building information modeling (BIM) tools. As a result, BIM users will gain access to advanced (but user-friendly) building energy modeling (BEM), calibration, and design optimization capabilities. Following integration, the BIM software will automatically generate a consistent OS-based BEM model, allowing users to develop projects in an integrated manner, moving back and forth between architectural and engineering perspectives without redundancy or data loss, saving time and effort.

Digitally Optimized Autonomous Robotic System for Hanford Waste Tank Handling [Slides]

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is developing a robotic system and digital twin to perform monitoring, inspection, and mapping of underground tank pits at the Hanford Site, operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE). The Autonomous Pit Exploration System (APES) will consist of four primary components: an electric vehicle truck with a robotic system developed by INL to deploy payloads into the tanks through small diameter preexisting risers, a robotic arm developed by Florida International University (FIU) for the purposes of deploying a variety of payloads into the tank pit environment, and a small robotic COTS crawler platform for examining the bottom of the pits.
