Low Power, Radiation Resilient Synchronous Edge Processing for Remote Monitoring

Next-generation space remote sensing systems may be equipped with imaging arrays that sense data at a rate that outstrips the processing capability of any computing hardware that can operate within a satellite’s power budget. This project developed novel convolutional and recurrent neural networks to detect and estimate point-like events amid clutter, and investigated their efficient and accurate implementation on analog in-memory computing systems that are 10-1000× more energy-efficient than digital processors. This project leveraged two memory devices at different levels of technological maturity: a large-scale analog computing prototype using commercial SONOS charge-trap memory, and electrochemical memory (ECRAM) with intrinsic radiation hardness. We experimentally demonstrated end-to-end analog processing of our neural networks on SONOS and characterized the radiation response of both SONOS and ECRAM. We advanced the state-of-the-art in ECRAM precision and reliability, and developed co-design methods to enable accurate long-term operation of SONOS analog accelerators in space radiation environments.

Solid State Power Substations (SSPS): A Multi-Hierarchical Architecture from Substation to Grid Edge

With the growing deployment of distributed generation, or power electronic interfaced renewable energy and storage technologies, the nature and behavior of the grid is changing. Synchronous machine-driven asset contributions to the generation mix are shrinking, leading to concerns regarding grid stability. Furthermore, the scale of smaller distributed PE resources needed for managing the electrical network could dwarf the existing system leading to more complex optimization problems and communication interconnections. This paper introduces the concept of a hierarchal system of controllers that spans the grid edge or the customer end to distribution scale substations or solid-state power substation (SSPS). This concept focuses on minimizing the number of interfaces and optimization considerations in the grid by clustering resources into nodes and hubs. The work validates the concept in a controller hardware-in-the-loop (cHIL) platform.

The two-way time synchronization system via a satellite voice channel

A newly developed two-way time synchronization system is described in this paper. The system uses one voice channel at a SCPC satellite digital communication earth station, whose bandwidth is only 45 kHz, thus saving satellite resources greatly. The system is composed of one master station and one or several, up to sixty-two, secondary stations. The master and secondary stations are equipped with the same equipment, including a set of timing equipment, a synthetic data terminal for time synchronizing, and a interface unit between the data terminal and the satellite earth station. The synthetic data terminal for time synchronization also has an IRIG-B code generator and a translator. The data terminal of master station is the key part of whole system. The system synchronization process is full automatic, which is controlled by the master station. Employing an autoscanning technique and conversational mode, the system accomplishes the following tasks: linking up liaison with each secondary station in turn, establishing a coarse time synchronization, calibrating date (years, months, days) and time of day (hours, minutes, seconds), precisely measuring the time difference between local station and the opposite station, exchanging measurement data, statistically processing the data, rejecting error terms, printing the data, calculating the clock difference and correcting the phase, thus realizing real-time synchronization from one point to multiple points. We also designed an adaptive phase circuit to eliminate the phase ambiguity of the PSK demodulator. The experiments have shown that the time synchronization accuracy is better than 2 mu S. The system has been put into regular operation.

IEEE P2988: Recommended Practice of Use and Functions of Virtual Synchronous Machines

Power systems are going through a paradigm shift from centralized generation to distributed generation. This brings unprecedented challenges to power systems stability, reliability, and security. Operating power electronic converters as Virtual Synchronous Machines (VSMs) can bring backward compatibility to power systems, unify and harmonize the integration and interaction of future power systems players, and improve power system stability, reliability, and security. This is vital for the large-scale adoption of distributed energy resources, the advancement of sustainability, and the development of a low-carbon economy. This IEEE 2988 Recommended Practice will define the fundamental principles, mandatory functions, and optional functions of a VSM, i.e., a power electronic converter that is operated to behave like conventional synchronous machines. It will not describe or specify power semiconductor devices, hardware topologies, or micro-controllers that are used to build a VSM. This talk will discuss the activities and development plan for IEEE 2988 with the aim to engaging broad stakeholders and widening participation.

AC/DC Power Systems with Applications for future Lunar/Mars base and Crew Exploration Vehicle

ABSTRACT The Power Systems branch at JSC faces a number of complex issues as it readies itself for the President's initiative on future space exploration beyond low earth orbit. Some of these preliminary issues - those dealing with electric power generation and distribution on board Mars-bound vehicle and that on Lunar and Martian surface may be summarized as follows: Type of prime mover - Because solar power may not be readily available on parts of the Lunar/Mars surface and also during the long duration flight to Mars, the primary source of power will most likely be nuclear power (Uranium fuel rods) with a secondary source of fuel cell (Hydrogen supply). The electric power generation source - With nuclear power being the main prime mover, the electric power generation source will most likely be an ac generator at a yet to be determined frequency. Thus, a critical issue is whether the generator should generate at constant or variable frequency. This will decide what type of generator to use - whether it is a synchronous machine, an asynchronous induction machine or a switched reluctance machine. The type of power distribution system - the distribution frequency, number of wires (3- wire, 4-wire or higher), and ac/dc hybridization. Building redundancy and fault tolerance in the generation and distribution sub-systems so that the system is safe; provides 100% availability to critical loads; continues to operate even with faulted sub-systems; and requires minimal maintenance. This report descril_es results of a summer faculty fellowship spent in the Power Systems Branch with the specific aim of investigating some of the lessons learned in electric power generation and usage from the terrestrial power systems industry, the aerospace industry as well as NASA's on-going missions so as to recommend novel surface and vehicle-based power systems architectures in support of future space exploration initiatives. A hybrid ac/dc architecture with source side and load side redundancies and including emergency generators on both ac and dc sides is proposed. The generation frequency is 400 Hz mostly because of the technology maturity at this frequency in the aerospace industry. Power will be distributed to several ac load distribution buses through solid state variable speed, constant frequency converters on the ac side. A segmented dc ring bus supplied from ac/dc converters and with the capability of connecting/disconnecting the segments will supply power to multiple de load distribution buses. The system will have the capability of reverse flow from dc to ac side in the case of an extreme emergency on the main ac generation side.

Wind sets from SMS images - An assessment of quality for GATE

The paper analyzes the accuracy, representativeness, and reproducibility of tracer winds in the 1974 GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment whose data are used as ground truth. The tracer winds were generated by tracking clouds in SMS (Synchronous Meteorological Satellite) images. Data availability limits comparisons to satellite winds with ship winds at the surface and at 250 mb. Attention is focused on how accurately the cloud displacements can be measured and on the extent to which the cloud displacements represent the wind field. Operator errors in obtaining the cloud displacements are examined in a series of reproducibility tests and wind sets. Differences between proximate satellite and ship winds were all under 3 m/sec. Representativeness of cloud tracers for cumulus and cirrus level flow is found to be good within the accuracy of currently available ground truth data.

Redundant operation of counter modules

A technique for the redundant operation of counter modules is described. Redundant operation is maintained by detecting the zero state of each counter and clearing the other to that state, thus periodically resynchronizing the counters, and obtaining an output from both counters through AC coupled diode-OR gates. Redundant operation of counter flip flops is maintained in a similar manner, and synchronous operation of redundant squarewave clock generators of the feedback type is effected by connecting together the feedback inputs of the squarewave generators through a coupling resistor, and obtaining an output from both generators through AC coupled diode-OR gates.

Proposal for implementation of CCSDS standards for use with spacecraft engineering/housekeeping data

Many of today's low earth orbiting spacecraft are using the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) protocol for better optimization of down link RF bandwidth and onboard storage space. However, most of the associated housekeeping data has continued to be generated and down linked in a synchronous, Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) fashion. There are many economies that the CCSDS protocol will allow to better utilize the available bandwidth and storage space in order to optimize the housekeeping data for use in operational trending and analysis work. By only outputting what is currently important or of interest, finer resolution of critical items can be obtained. This can be accomplished by better utilizing the normally allocated housekeeping data down link and storage areas rather than taking space reserved for science.

Phase-Synchronized Modal Testing of Mirror Membrane

The research reports on the development of a whole-field, system-level interferometry technique having phase-synchronized data acquisition and adjustable phase triggering. The technique utilizes a Fizeau interferometer, arbitrary function generator, oscilloscope, trigger filter, and CCD camera to determine the out-of-plane modal frequencies of a thin, highly reflective membrane. The technique generates phase-adjustable CCD camera trigger signals that are synchronized to the audio frequency excitation signal. The surface figures from the resulting interferograms were evaluated with fringe-following software and compared against that of an ideal membrane vibrating at resonance.

Fixed gap capacitive power transfer coupling for wound field synchronous machines

An electrical rotating machine, such as a generator or motor, communicates power from a stationary location to the rotating rotor of the rotating machine via opposed pairs of capacitor plates, one plate of each pair rotating with the rotor and one plate of each pair fixed not to rotate. Larger plate gaps suitable for mechanically rigid plates are possible through high-voltage and high-frequency AC signals managed by using a dielectric support design for the capacitor plates minimizing dielectric loss and/or impedance matching on the rotor.

Master clock and time distribution system for the NASA Deep Space Network

NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) consists of more than 20 antennas located at three globally spaced ground communications facilities. Local generation and distribution of precise time and frequency reference signals comprise an essential and central component of each complex. Within each complex synchronized timing references are required by approximately 100 users located at distances up to 30 kilometers from the central control center and station Master Clock. In this paper a highly modular, hot-swappable, and expandable system design for generation, delivery, and synchronization of highly precise and stable timing signals over fiber optic cables is described.

The Bearingless Electrical Machine

Electromagnetic bearings allow the suspension of solids. For rotary applications, the most important physical effect is the force of a magnetic circuit to a high permeable armature, called the MAXWELL force. Contrary to the commonly used MAXWELL bearings, the bearingless electrical machine will take advantage of the reaction force of a conductor carrying a current in a magnetic field. This kind of force, called Lorentz force, generates the torque in direct current, asynchronous and synchronous machines. The magnetic field, which already exists in electrical machines and helps to build up the torque, can also be used for the suspension of the rotor. Besides the normal winding of the stator, a special winding was added, which generates forces for levitation. So a radial bearing, which is integrated directly in the active part of the machine, and the motor use the laminated core simultaneously. The winding was constructed for the levitating forces in a special way so that commercially available standard ac inverters for drives can be used. Besides wholly magnetic suspended machines, there is a wide range of applications for normal drives with ball bearings. Resonances of the rotor, especially critical speeds, can be damped actively.

An Overview of Inverter-based Resource Interconnection Standards

For the past century, electric power systems have primarily been bulk power systems consisting of generation, transmission, and distribution networks. Now the rapid expansion of distributed renewable power sources (RESs) and the shift from large, conventional synchronous machine resources to smaller-sized resources with diverse generation characteristics become the most significant change in modern power systems. With the increasing penetration of RESs, which are inverter-based resources (IBRs), it is important to develop interconnection standards that define performance and capability criteria for these IBRs. This is necessary to ensure the stable and reliable operation of power systems. This report summarizes the standards for IBRs interconnection in North America.

Synchronization of nonsolitonic Kerr combs

Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature that manifests as the spectral or temporal locking of coupled nonlinear oscillators. In the field of photonics, synchronization has been implemented in various laser and oscillator systems, enabling applications including coherent beam combining and high-precision pump-probe measurements. Recent experiments have also shown time-domain synchronization of Kerr frequency combs via coupling of two separate oscillators operating in the dissipative soliton [i.e., anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD)] regime. Here, we demonstrate all-optical synchronization of Kerr combs in the nonsolitonic, normal GVD regime in which phase-locked combs with high pump-to-comb conversion efficiencies and relatively flat spectral profiles are generated. Our results reveal the universality of Kerr comb synchronization and extend its scope beyond the soliton regime, opening a promising path toward coherently combined normal GVD Kerr combs with spectrally flat profiles and high comb-line powers in an efficient microresonator platform.
