A Two-Stage Quantum Reinforcement Learning Method for Multi-Objective Transmission Switching

Multi-objective transmission switching (MO-TS) problems involve the strategic reconfiguration of network topology to simultaneously optimize multiple objectives. As the system scale increases, finding feasible solutions becomes increasingly challenging due to the problem's nonlinearity and high computational complexity. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stage quantum reinforcement learning method that leverages potential quantum advantages for MO-TS. In the first stage, candidate switching lines are identified using a graph-theoretical approach to reduce the problem's dimensionality. The second stage introduces a quantum-classical reinforcement learning framework, where a learnable measurement-based CNN-ResVQC architecture is developed to effectively reduce the input dimension for quantum processing, mitigate vanishing gradients, and enhance trainability while improving the quantum circuit's flexibility in modeling complex decision policies for MO-TS. Numerical studies on IEEE 14-bus, 57-bus, and 118-bus systems demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves superior training stability and faster convergence with approximately 1% of the network parameters required by classical algorithms, highlighting its effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Furthermore, the practicality is validated through its stable convergence under three common quantum noise channels.

Topological Equivalence of VSI and CSI Commutation Cells and Its Application to Switching Resonance Analysis and Damper Design

This paper proposes the concept of the topological equivalence between the commutation cells of a voltage source inverter (VSI) and a current source inverter (CSI) using duality and equivalent circuit transformation techniques. A switching resonance of CSI is analyzed and an effective three-phase RC damper is derived from the dc-link RC damper of VSIs based on the topological equivalence of the VSI and CSI commutation cells. Furthermore, a new three-phase RC damper design framework utilizing the topological equivalence is proposed. Here, experimental results verify that the proposed three-phase RC damper design for CSI significantly reduces the switching resonance and improves the CSI’s output waveform total harmonics distortions (THDs).

Mechanical morphotype switching as an adaptive response in mycobacteria

Invading microbes face a myriad of cidal mechanisms of phagocytes that inflict physical damage to microbial structures. How intracellular bacterial pathogens adapt to these stresses is not fully understood. Here, we report the discovery of a virulence mechanism by which changes to the mechanical stiffness of the mycobacterial cell surface confer refraction to killing during infection. Long-term time-lapse atomic force microscopy was used to reveal a process of “mechanical morphotype switching” in mycobacteria exposed to host intracellular stress. A “soft” mechanical morphotype switch enhances tolerance to intracellular macrophage stress, including cathelicidin. Both pharmacologic treatment, with bedaquiline, and a genetic mutant lacking uvrA modified the basal mechanical state of mycobacteria into a soft mechanical morphotype, enhancing survival in macrophages. Our study proposes microbial cell mechanical adaptation as a critical axis for surviving host-mediated stressors.

Field-free deterministic switching of all–van der Waals spin-orbit torque system above room temperature

Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials hold promise for the development of high-density, energy-efficient spintronic devices for memory and computation. Recent breakthroughs in material discoveries and spin-orbit torque control of vdW ferromagnets have opened a path for integration of vdW magnets in commercial spintronic devices. However, a solution for field-free electric control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) vdW magnets at room temperatures, essential for building compact and thermally stable spintronic devices, is still missing. Here, we report a solution for the field-free, deterministic, and nonvolatile switching of a PMA vdW ferromagnet, Fe 3 GaTe 2 , above room temperature (up to 320 K). We use the unconventional out-of-plane anti-damping torque from an adjacent WTe 2 layer to enable such switching with a low current density of 2.23 × 10 6 A cm –2 . This study exemplifies the efficacy of low-symmetry vdW materials for spin-orbit torque control of vdW ferromagnets and provides an all-vdW solution for the next generation of scalable and energy-efficient spintronic devices.

The Influence of Switching between Chaotic Regimes on the Correlation Characteristics of Nonlinear Systems

The problem of dynamic regime diagnostics in nonlinear systems using their experimental time series is studied in the presence of switching between various oscillatory processes. Interpretation of such data can be affected by errors in the calculated correlation characteristics caused by the presence of fragments corresponding to different dynamic regimes. It is shown that the switching between various regimes more significantly influences the diagnostics of anticorrelated dynamics.

Switching the conductance of a single molecule: Lessons from molecular junctions

The concept of using single molecules as functional building blocks in electronic circuitry represents the ultimate device miniaturization and has garnered tremendous attention from physics, chemistry, and engineering. Recent advances in single-molecule junction techniques have enabled direct investigation of charge transport in a quasi-one-dimensional conduction channel composed of an individual molecule. Furthermore, one of the main research focuses over the past decade has been to understand the conductance switching effect of single molecules as it is essential for developing molecular-scale optoelectronics, computing, and sensing applications. In this perspective, we highlight the established physical and chemical mechanisms for single-molecule conductance switching behavior and examine the associated stimuli in single-molecule junction systems.

Laser-Induced Ultrafast Demagnetization and Spin Switching (Final Report)

The information technology revolution demands bigger and faster magnetic storage devices. The funded research focuses on a new frontier - Laser-induced ultrafast all-optical spin switching (AOS), where a single laser pulse can switch spins from one direction to another permanently, without a magnetic field, on a time scale of 1-10 picoseconds, 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than the existing technology. The funded research has successfully resolved a long-standing issue in ultrafast demagnetization whether the lattice contributes to the demagnetization. We developed a high level first-principles theory and employed a massively parallel computer to pin down the details of the physical mechanisms that are inaccessible to other methods. This unique feature allows us to compute the force on each atom in both bulk and monolayer systems. We find that it is indeed true there is a nonzero force on each atom, but the idea of vibration contribution is not crucial to our basic understanding of physics. This paves the way to future experimental, theoretical and technological developments.

Laboratory Evaluation and Field Demonstration of High Rotor Switched Reluctance Motor (HRSRM) Technology

In this project, a new motor technology based on a novel design called a High Rotor Pole Switched Reluctance Motor (HRSRM) was demonstrated and evaluated. The HRSRM system combines an innovative electric motor design with a programmable variable-speed drive and a controller that provides real time monitoring and cloud-based connectivity. Unlike induction or permanent-magnet motor designs, this motor uses a switched reluctance (SR) design that purports to be simpler to manufacture and more reliable and efficient to operate. Several of the stated benefits of the HRSRM system were evaluated as part of this project. First, the technology is claimed to offer greater energy efficiency than any motor currently on the market. Second, according to the manufacturer, the motor can be dropped into an existing pump or heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning application in less than 30 minutes, and has controls that can be pre-programmed to interact with the application’s existing control structure. Third, the control system allows the HRSRM to replace a constant-speed motor with one that provides variable-speed capabilities without requiring the installation of a variable-speed drive. The evaluation of a 10 hp HRSRM system was conducted in two parts. One portion of the evaluation consisted of performance tests conducted in a tightly controlled laboratory environment in which the performance of the HRSRM system was compared with that of a premium efficiency induction motor with a variable-frequency drive. The other portion of the evaluation was conducted at a field location within a General Services Administration facility in which the HRSRM system replaced an existing motor system in a 10 hp chilled water pump. The performance of the HRSRM system was compared with that of the incumbent motor system that was supplied with the pump from the manufacturer. The overall project and performance objectives for this motor evaluation are defined in Table ES.1.

Entropy Analysis of FPGA Interconnect and Switch Matrices for Physical Unclonable Functions

Random variations in microelectronic circuit structures represent the source of entropy for physical unclonable functions (PUFs). In this paper, we investigate delay variations that occur through the routing network and switch matrices of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The delay variations are isolated from other components of the programmable logic, e.g., look-up tables (LUTs), flip-flops (FFs), etc., using a feature of Xilinx FPGAs called dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR). A set of partial designs is created to fix the placement of a time-to-digital converter (TDC) and supporting infrastructure to enable the path delays through the target interconnect and switch matrices to be extracted by subtracting out common-mode delay components. Delay variations are analyzed in the different levels of routing resources available within FPGAs, i.e., local routing and across-chip routing. Data are collected from a set of Xilinx Zynq 7010 devices, and a statistical analysis of within-die variations in delay through a set of the randomly-generated and hand-crafted interconnects is presented.

Sub-Nanosecond, Room-Temperature, Mid-IR Fe:ZnSe Gain-Switched Laser: Experimental Characterization and Modeling

We present the modeling and experimental characterization of a room-temperature, sub-nanosecond, gain-switched (GS) Fe:ZnSe laser operating at 4.4–4.8 μm. As pump sources, we used a 2.79 µm Q-switched Cr:Er:YSGG laser with a pulse duration of 52 ns and the 2.98 μm idler of a Nd:YAG pumped KTA-OPO system with a pulse duration of 9 ns. The shortest pulse durations were measured to be 1.4 ns and 0.7 ns under excitation by the Cr:Er:YSGG laser and KTA-OPO system, respectively. The developed Fe:ZnSe laser model showed good agreement with the experimental results. Optimization of the laser parameters based on model simulations suggests that an Fe:ZnSe microchip laser configuration could be achieved with a pulse duration of ~250 ps and an efficiency of ~20%.

Data center coolant switch

A data center cooling system has an indoor portion wherein heat is absorbed from components in the data center, and an outdoor heat exchanger portion wherein outside air is used to cool a first heat transfer fluid (e.g., water) present in at least the outdoor heat exchanger portion of the cooling system during a first mode. When an appropriate time has been reached to switch from the first mode to a second mode, the outdoor heat exchanger portion of the data cooling system is switched to a second heat transfer fluid, which is a relatively low performance heat transfer fluid (compared to the first fluid). It has a second heat transfer fluid freezing point, lower than the first heat transfer fluid freezing point, and sufficiently low to operate without freezing when the outdoor air temperature drops below a first predetermined relationship with the first heat transfer fluid freezing point.
