Photon-coupled isolation switch to provide transistor output electrically isolated from driving sources and all other switch terminals
Low noise transistor switch design capable of switching 1A and meeting military current probe EMI specifications
A commercial Zr-V-Fe alloy (i.e., SAES Getters trade name alloy St-172) has been assessed as reversible hydrogen storage material for use in actuators of gas gap heat switches. Two prototype actuators containing the SAES St-172 material were built and operated for several thousand cycles to evaluate performance of the metal hydride system under conditions simulating heat switch operation.
We present the general principles of gas gap heat switches that impact their performances for the Planck cryocooler, develop two figures of merit relevant to this application, and present initial characterization results of switches using uranium or ZrNi as the hydriding material.
These heat switches are designed to replace slower gas-gap switches in many applications. Applications include isolating calorimeters, and the thermal shorting of heat shields to shorten cool down times on cryogenic apparatus.
This study was undertaken to determine the Single Event Latchup (SEL) susceptibility of the Vishay DG403DY-E3 (Analog Switch). The device was under a biased and switching configuration during irradiation and continuously monitored for destructive events. The parts were tested at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88 inch cyclotron facility
The Cassini spacecraft uses a new hybrid device to replace the load switching relays used on previous missions. These hybrid devices provide additional functions such as circuit breaking, controlled voltage turn-on and current limiting features. The current limiting function makes an uninterruptible power system possible. This hybrid, the Solid State Power Switch (SSPS), performs the function of connecting the 192 Cassini loads to the spacecraft power bus in response to commands from the Command and Data subsystem.
Free space optical (FSO) communication links increase data rate, reduce size and power, and increase security. These criteria are particularly important in space communication. Increasing mission complexity and crowding of lower frequency bands is driving the need for optical communications. This makes FSO communication technology extremely attractive, and there is significant ongoing work towards the development of FSO transceivers, ground stations, and relays. Notable projects include the Laser Communications Relay Demonstrator (LCRD), Integrated LCRD Low-Earth Orbit User Modem and Amplifier Terminal (ILLUMA-T), and CubeSat Laser Infrared Crosslink (CLICK) CubeSats. These technologies will eventually operate in unison with existing Radio Frequency (RF) systems, but there is little experimental investigation of such hybrid networks. This paper presents some experimental underpinnings of switching strategies for hybrid RF/FSO systems in various attenuation conditions. A 170 m optical path was constructed in an enclosed test chamber where atmospheric conditions can be tightly controlled. The performance of a 1550 nm infrared FSO link was evaluated in this chamber under varying conditions of turbulence and jitter. The system will eventually be used to investigate switching criteria between the FSO and RF channels. Optimizing the use of RF/FSO communication links will allow data rate, size, power, and security improvements. Therefore, this research will help to mature the network architecture and improve the performance of communication networks to be used for LEO, GEO, Lagrange, Lunar missions and beyond.
By combining a single-throw microwave switch with a microwave circulator in a circuit, two input lines can be switched quickly. There is only a brief transition time when both /or neither/ of the two lines are connected to an output line.
A circuit, in a wide bandwidth mode, overcomes transient-producing capacitance switching by maintaining an equivalent voltage at all times. Bandwidth switching may be done at any time, and integrity of the loop lock is maintained.
Reluctance switch incorporated in an induction motor is used for sensing rotor position and switching armature circuits in a brushless dc motor. This device drives the solar array system of an unmanned space satellite.
Two hermetically sealed, short travel, limit switches permit fuse replacement without danger of a spark or arcing. The switches are wired in parallel circuits and actuated by manually operated cams containing the circuit fuses.
Three-position rocker switch actuator provides positive center positioning to inhibit possible override. Switch position is visually identified by rocker position, and functions can be shown on tabs and bars.
In-place calibration of a pressure switch is provided by a system of radially oriented flexing arms which, when rotated at a known velocity, convert the centrifugal force of the arms to a linear force along the shaft. The linear force, when applied to a pressure switch diaphragm, can then be calculated.
Differential amplifier circuit switches ac signals with peak amplitudes greater than 5 volts. This solid state circuit biases a switching transistor on and off by a 0.1 to 5.0 dc control voltage.
Calibrator and switch design enables pressure switches to operate under 150 g shock loads. The design employs a saturated liquid-to-vapor phase transition at constant pressure to produce a known force independent of displacement over a usable range.
Automatic channel switching device operates with all three triple modular redundant channels when there are no errors. When a failure occurs, channel and module switching isolate the failure to a specific channel. Since only one must operate correctly, reliability is increased.
Variable reluctance switch avoids contact corrosion and bounce in a hostile environment. It consists of a wire-wound magnetic core and moveable bridge piece that alters the core flux pattern to produce an electrical output useful for switching control media.
