Summary Report on the Refined User Requirements for U.S. Fusion Prototypic Neutron Source

The Fusion Prototypic Neutron Source (FPNS) is proposed as an urgent near-term facility necessary for understanding D-T fusion neutron degradation processes in materials and for the development of high-performance radiation tolerant materials for fusion power reactors. This facility is central to our goal of predicting the behavior of materials in the harsh D-T neutron environment and calibrating and verifying the materials performance models necessary to support design of next-generation fusion reactors. Key FPNS performance metrics were previously defined for the cost-efficient facility necessary to adequately and expediently resolve key materials science knowledge gaps required to move to next-step fusion devices. This brief report is intended to expand upon this previous metrics discussion as an aid to selecting the most desirable FPNS concept and enabling a facility that meets the program needs.

Summary of GNU Octave Lady Godiva Simulator

A pseudo real-time interactive reactor simulator for the Lady Godiva reactor has been developed using the GNU Octave software package. The simulator tracks the time-dependent power and fuel temperature behavior of the Lady Godiva reactor during sub-prompt critical transients. Users interact with the simulator by controlling reactivity input. This input occurs through users repositioning a control rod as desired during simulator operation. Various reactor parameters are displayed graphically in near “real time,” facilitating user assessment and feedback input. The reactor model consists of a lumped-fuel core, a single control rod, and a simple heat transfer mechanism that allows heat to be rejected from the core. The goal of the simulator is to demonstrate in real-time the system response to reactivity perturbations, the effect of reactivity feedback, and the effect of temperature-dependent equilibrium conditions. The dynamic behavior of the reactor is primarily driven by the relative characteristic time-constants between the delayed neutrons and the overall heat transfer parameter. The simulator will allow users to gain experience performing standard reactor operations, such as establishing steady-state at different fuel temperatures and making power level changes

IMS Rapid Response FY21 Summary Report for: Integrating Patterned Probes with Four-Dimensional Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy for Unrivaled Crystallographic Structure Determination in Nanomaterials

The initial goal of our 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM)-based project was to develop strain resolution two orders of magnitude better than what is now currently possible with electron-based scattering techniques, all while collecting scattering information from 7 different tilt axes at one time [multi-beam electron diffraction (MBED)1 ] through the development of a new electron probe-forming aperture with non-circular features (patterned probes 2 ). We set out to accomplish this through a collaboration with Drs. Colin Ophus and Ben Savitsky at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (they are the world-leading experts in developing the complex computational codes required to perform orientation analysis and quantitative strain mapping on our 4D-STEM data sets. We are motivated to invest in this area as it will be the only technique sensitive enough to perform three- dimensional automated crystallographic orientation mapping (ACOM) and strain mapping for materials exposed to external stimulus (a focus of our larger efforts).

2021 Microbial U (Summary Report)

The US nuclear industry is on the cusp of significant growth in the areas of advanced reactors, SMRs, and microreactors. The existing commercial nuclear reactor fleet is considering expanding the life of the reactor cores by slightly increasing enrichment of their fuel. The common thread is the demand for High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU). A technical challenge exists with a blend down of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) from spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the “Y12” specifications. U-236 impacts reactor performance and is not desired in fresh fuel cores. In order to meet tight specifications, U-236 must be diluted by addition of fresh HEU. Fresh HEU is highly sought after and not plentiful in the US. A solution to this issue lies in the application of a technology to selectively remove the U-236 with non-hazardous microorganisms, which will be evaluated in this project by experimentally separating different isotopes of uranium.

Summary of the CeC Experiment in RHIC Run 21

The coherent electron cooling (CeC) experiment at RHIC is crucial for determining the feasibility of this technique for cooling the hadron beam in the electron-ion collider (EIC) and reaching the luminosity of 10 34 cm -1 s -1 . During RHIC Run 21, various progresses have been made including successfully commissioning the time resolved diagnostic beam line (TRDBL), achieving the key performance parameters (KPP) of the system and the development of novel methods for accurate alignment of the electron beam with the ion beam. While the longitudinal cooling of the ion beam with cooling time of 100 hours was observed during Run 21, it was related to the traditional electron cooling since the cooling rate was not as sensitive to the energy of the electron beam as what one would expect from the CeC. In Run 21, we were not able to observe the longitudinal cooling of the ion beam caused by CeC and the main challenges are identified as the insufficient stability of the electrons' energy. The sources of the energy jitter have been identified and we are making improvements to the stability of the CeC system for Run 22.

Fuel/Basket Degradation Modeling Summary

This report documents the activities in a preliminary phase of development for three models: 1) waste package breach model, 2) fuel/basket degradation model, and 3) dual-purpose canister (DPC) crush model. The waste package breach model describes the coupling of mass flow, heat transport, and canister shell deformation in response to a heat-generating (criticality) event. The fuel/basket degradation model describes potential weakening and disaggregation of the DPC structure from corrosion, possibly accelerated by seismic ground motion. Progressively degraded three-dimensional (3D) configurations of the fuel, basket, and shell are generated for future analysis of reactivity (with as-loaded DPC fuel characteristics). Another important application for the fuel/basket degradation model is validation of the two stylized degradation cases currently being used by other investigators for analysis of the as-loaded DPC inventory under disposal conditions. The DPC crush model investigates stability of a typical DPC after breach of the disposal overpack allows fluids from the repository near-field environment to penetrate and externally pressurize the canister shell. Preliminary results show that large deformation of the DPC could occur for external pressure on the order of 10 to 15 MPa, or the shell could be stable (not collapse) with pressure of 20 MPa or greater if the basket plates are fully welded at the connections.
