Satellite Power System (SPS) FY 79 program summary

The Satellite Power System (SPS) program a joint effort to develop an initial understanding of the technical feasibility, the economic practicality, and the social and environmental acceptability of the SPS concept is discussed. This is being accomplished through implementation of the Concept Development and Evaluation Program Plan which is scheduled for completion by the end of FY 1980. This Program Summary not only covers FY 1979 but includes work completed in FY 1977 and FY 1978 in order to give a comprehensive picture of the DOE involvement in the SPS concept development and evaluation process.

The Galilean satellites - New near-infrared spectral reflectance measurements /0.65-2.5 microns/ and a 0.325-5 micron summary

New near-infrared (0.65-2.5 microns) reflectance spectra of the Galilean satellites are presented. These spectra more precisely define the water ice absorption features previously identified on Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto at 1.55 and 2.0 microns. In addition, previously unreported spectral features due to water ice are seen at 1.25, 1.06, 0.90, and 0.81 microns on Europa, and at 1.25, 1.04, and possibly 0.71 microns on Ganymede. Unreported absorption features in Callisto's spectrum occur at 1.2 microns, probably due to H2O, and a weak, broad band extending from 0.75 to 0.95 microns due possibly to other minerals. The spectrum of Io has only weak absorption features at 1.15 microns and between 0.8 and 1.0 microns. No water absorptions are positively identified in the Io spectra, indicating an upper limit of areal water frost coverage of 2% (leading and trailing sides). It is found for Callisto, Ganymede, and Europa that the water ice absorption features are due to free water and not to water bound or absorbed onto minerals. The areal coverage of water frost is approximately 100% on Europa (trailing side), approximately 65% on Ganymede (leading side), and 20-30% on Callisto (leading side). An upper limit of approximately 5% bound water (in addition to the 20-30% ice) may be present on Callisto, based on the strong 3-micron band seen by other investigators. A summary of spectra of the satellites from 0.325 to about 5 microns to aid in laboratory and interpretation studies is also presented.

MAIL LOG, program summary and specifications

The summary and specifications to obtain the software package, MAIL LOG, developed for the Scout Project Automatic Data System, SPADS are provided. The MAIL LOG program has four modes of operation: (1) input - putting new records into the data base; (2) revise - changing or modifying existing records in the data base; (3) search - finding special records existing in the data base; and (4) archive - store or put away existing records in the data base. The output includes special printouts of records in the data base and results from the input and search modes.

Ion beam applications research - A 1981 summary of Lewis Research Center programs

In 1975 the NASA's Lewis Research Center initiated a technology specific spinoff program to more broadly utilize benefits resulting from ion thruster technology. An Ion Beam Applications Research (IBAR) program was organized to enable the development of new or improved materials, products, and processes through the nonpropulsive application of ion thruster technology. Focused efforts to identify, evaluate, develop and transfer applications to the user community were conducted. A summary of the NASA Lewis Research Center's in-house, grant, and contract projects involving IBAR is given. Specific application efforts utilizing ion beam sputter etching, deposition, and texturing are discussed as well as ion source and component technology applications.

The microwave radiometer spacecraft. A design study: Executive summary

A conceptual design was developed for a microwave radiometer spacecraft (MRS) using a large passive reflector, microwave radiometer, and advanced control concepts soil moisture mapping from microwave sensing for global crop forecasting. Mission requirements and tradeoffs were defined, and major subsystems (structural, electromagnetic surface, and attitude control) conceptually designed. An overview of the mission and a summary of the study results are presented.

Space Operations Center system analysis study extension. Volume 1: Executive summary

The analysis fo Space Operations Center (SOC) systems is summarized. Design considerations, configurations of the manned orbital space station, planned operational and research missions, and subsystem tradeoffs are considered. Integration into the space transportation system is discussed. A modular design concept permitting growth of the SOC as its functions are expanded is described. Additional considerations are special requirements for habitat modules, design modifications needed to operate in geosynchronous orbits, and use of the external tank for cryogenic propellant storage or as a pressurized hangar. A cost summary is presented.

The 30/20 GHz flight experiment system, phase 2. Volume 1: Executive summary

Summary information on the final communication system design, communication payload, space vehicle, and development plan for the 30/20 GHz flight experiment will be installed on the LEASAT spacecraft which will be placed into orbit from the space shuttle cargo bay. The communication concept has two parts: a truck service and a customer premise service (CPS). The trucking system serves four spot beams which are interconnected in a satellite switched time division multiple access mode by an IF switch matrix. The CPS covers two large areas of the eastern United States with a pair of scanning beams.

Applications systems verification and transfer project. Volume 1: Operational applications of satellite snow cover observations: Executive summary

Both LANDSAT and NOAA satellite data were used in improving snowmelt runoff forecasts. When the satellite snow cover data were tested in both empirical seasonal runoff estimation and short term modeling approaches, a definite potential for reducing forecast error was evident. A cost benefit analysis run in conjunction with the snow mapping indicated a $36.5 million annual benefit accruing from a one percent improvement in forecast accuracy using the snow cover data for the western United States. The annual cost of employing the system would be $505,000. The snow mapping has proven that satellite snow cover data can be used to reduce snowmelt runoff forecast error in a cost effective manner once all operational satellite data are available within 72 hours after acquisition. Executive summaries of the individual snow mapping projects are presented.

Ground truth crop proportion summaries for US segments, 1976-1979

The original ground truth data was collected, digitized, and registered to LANDSAT data for use in the LACIE and AgRISTARS projects. The numerous ground truth categories were consolidated into fewer classes of crops or crop conditions and counted occurrences of these classes for each segment. Tables are presented in which the individual entries are the percentage of total segment area assigned to a given class. The ground truth summaries were prepared from a 20% sample of the scene. An analysis indicates that this size of sample provides sufficient accuracy for use of the data in initial segment screening.
