Distributed PV Hosting Capacity Evaluation Considering Equitable PV Accommodation: Preprint

In distribution systems, distributed photovoltaic (DPV) hosting capacity is widely used by system operators to evaluate how much DPV the distribution networks can accommodate without violating operational constraints. With the proliferation of DPV deployment, if managed properly, it offers a great opportunity to mitigate the persistent energy inequity issue in electric grid. Otherwise, energy inequity can be exacerbated with unequal DPV access when hosting capacity improvement plans ignore the equity factor. To consider energy equity in distribution network planning for enhancing DPV accommodation, the hosting capacity evaluation should be improved to consider equity constraints endogenously. In this paper, a DPV hosting capacity evaluation method is proposed considering equitable DPV access among sub-regions of a distribution feeder partitioned by social-economic indicators such as the income levels. The results demonstrate that considering equity in DPV hosting capacity evaluation can provide valuable reference in the equitable energy transition. This work provides a valuable guidance for future distribution network upgrade planning for equitable DPV deployment.

Using an Absolute Cavity Pyrgeometer to Calibrate Pyrgeometers Outdoors with Respect to the International System of Units

Accurate measurement of the atmospheric longwave irradiance is important for renewable energy and atmospheric science applications. Pyrgeometers are deployed outdoors all over the world to measure the atmospheric longwave irradiance and presently are calibrated with traceability to the interim standards for atmospheric longwave radiation measurement, the standards are based on four pyrgeometers and their average irradiance is the World InfraRed Standard Group (WISG) which is developed and maintained by The Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos/World Radiation Center (PMOD/WRC). Since 2013 the InfraRed Integrating Sphere (IRIS) developed by PMOD/WRC and the Absolute Cavity Pyrgeometer (ACP) developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have been compared outdoors six times at different locations and the difference between the measured atmospheric longwave irradiance by ACP and IRIS was less than 2 w/m2 with traceability to the International System of Units (SI). During the six comparisons the irradiance measured by the interim WISG was 5 w/m2 lower than the irradiance measured by the average irradiance measured by the ACP and IRIS [1]. Based on this discrepancy, the World Meteorological Organization's Commission for Instruments and Methods of Observation (CIMO) recommended that the interim WISG should be adjusted to be traceable to SI units [2]. In anticipation of CIMO's expert team agreement on establishing the world reference using the average irradiance measured by ACP and IRIS in this article we describe a procedure to calibrate pyrgeometers with traceability to SI. One Absolute Cavity Pyrgeometer (ACP95F3) was used to calibrate four pyrgeometers traceable to SI units. Three Eppley PIRs and one Kipp&Zonen CG4 were originally calibrated with traceability to the interim WISG. Using the described procedure below, the responsivity of each pyrgeometer was then adjusted to match the irradiance measured by ACP. Outdoor data was collected during one clear sky night monitored by the output thermopile voltage of ACP95F3. The irradiance measured by the PIRs and CG4 was calculated using NREL equation. The calculated uncertainty (U95) of the PIRs varied from 2.43 w/m2 to 2.67 w/m2 , and for the CG4 equals 1.97 w/m2 with respect to SI.

Viewfactor and Raytracing for AgriPV Modeling

View factor models are used in due diligence software to calculate rear irradiance for bifacial modules. An intermediate step in this calculation is the irradiance at the ground level, which can be leveraged for evaluating the Photo Active Radiation available for crops in Agrivoltaic setups. This paper presents the metrics and modifications to the model for ground irradiance study with the view factor approach, compares it to the raytracing method, and validates it with field measurements of ground irradiance. It is found that for the clearances, row-to-row setups, and tilts studied, the view factor method matches with raytracing results within 2% MBD. The comparison is performed for the nine most common agriPV configurations using high-performance computing and the NSRDB database for the whole US, with results and data made available open-source on the InSPIRE AgriPV website.

More Than Recycling: How Should We Define Circularity Goals for PV in a Global Energy Transition? Preprint

Energy transition to carbon-free electricity is a crucial pillar of the Circular Economy. Renewable energy reduces environmental impacts and decarbonizes the production of other goods. But, manufacturing renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic (PV) modules, require energy inputs that are currently carbon intensive. So, how do we decarbonize and circularize these critical technologies to achieve a sustainable energy transition? This work proposes that effective capacity-the installed capacity accounting for degradation rates and failures-is a critical metric to evaluate renewable energy technologies on the path toward circular economy and energy transitions. Our analyses also emphasize the importance of examining a suite of metrics incorporating mass and energy flows to identify potential tradeoffs and inform design or lifecycle management decisions holistically.

Estimating the Value of Worker Training: A System Reliability & LCOE Perspective

This workshop presentation briefly describes the labor standards required for large photovoltaic (PV) systems (>1MWac) to receive the full investment tax credit from the Inflation Reduction Act. The potential for labor standards to affect aspects other than upfront installation costs (such as energy generation or maintenance expenses) is analyzed using levelized cost of energy (LCOE) calculations. This considers benefits which may come from better training for workers, more productive workers, or improved installation quality, using NREL's simplified PV-specific LCOE calculator at pvlcoe.nrel.gov.

Circular Economy in Photovoltaics

The photovoltaic (PV) industry is advancing towards a circular economy (CE), emphasizing the crucial role of sustainability in PV technology. This progression entails adopting practices that extend the lifespan of PV modules, motivated by a commitment to CE principles and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Tackling the challenges to achieve circularity is essential. Moreover, the goals of IEA-PVPS Task 12 are to enhance the environmental profile of PV electricity, highlighting the industry's dedication to the environmental, economic, and policy dimensions of CE.

Human Health Risk Assessment for Improper Landfill Disposal of End-of-Life CdTe Modules

The present work is a continuation of the 2020 IEA PVPS Task 12 Human Health Risk Assessment Methods for PV Part 3: Module Disposal Risks. The 2020 report performed a human health risk assessment (HHRA) for disposal of a cadmium telluride (CdTe) PV module in an unlined landfill, focusing solely on risks from cadmium. This study extends the 2020 HHRA on CdTe PV, analyzing eleven constituent elements: Cd, Se, Te, Cu, Si, Cr(III), Mo, Sn, Zn, Ni, and Al. The present HHRA was performed through two methods: utilization of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Delisting Risk Assessment Software (DRAS V.4.0) on eight exposure pathways for cancer risk and non-cancer hazards; and comparison of exposure point concentrations to federal standards for groundwater, surface water, air, and soil exposure pathways. Cancer risks and non-cancer hazards posed by elemental leaching through all evaluated exposure pathways, using both methods, were found to be several orders of magnitude below USEPA health-protective thresholds. Cadmium exhibited both the highest risks and lowest uncertainty considering data availability on chemical content, leachate, and federal screening levels.
