Development of an Integrated Thermal Energy Storage Heat Exchanger for Concentrating Solar Power

In this design and development effort a latent-heat energy storage heat exchanger was designed for a 10MW e sCO 2 power plant as a basis for detailed design and testing of a new phase-change heat exchanger technology. High efficiency thermal conductors of graphite foam or folded copper were employed within chloride salt phase-change volumes bounded by alternating high density compact plate-fin heat exchange cells in this new heat exchanger technology. Test articles were constructed at Brayton Energy and tested at Argonne National Laboratory. Copper-conducting samples were constructed and tested at Brayton Energy.

Comparative assessment of orbital and terrestrial central power plants

Recent studies of the space power system (SPS) are integrated into a total social cost framework developed for terrestrial central electric power systems. Total social costs include the projection of commercial economics to the time frame of interest as well as the federal research, development and demonstration (RD&D) costs, the health impacts, the resources required, the environmental impacts and other social costs. The SPS system is limited to transporting all materials from the earth's surface to geosynchronous orbit. Only silicon photovoltaic is considered as the SPS energy conversion technique. Costs and impacts of the LWR are considered as a reference for nuclear systems, and the low BTU coal gasification with combined cycle gas and steam turbines is considered as a reference for a fossil central electric plant. The ground solar systems considered are solar thermal using the central receiver approach with thermal storage, and solar photovoltaic using the silicon cell with battery storage.

Design Factors for Applying Cryogen Storage and Delivery Technology to Solar Thermal Propulsion

Thermodynamic Vent System (TVS) and Multilayer Insulation (MLI) technology, originally developed for long term storage of cryogen propellants in microgravity, is ideally suited for propellant storage and delivery systems for solar thermal propulsion. With this technology the heat-induced pressure rise in the tank provides the propellant delivery pressure without the need for an auxiliary pressurant system, and propellant delivery is used to remove the excess heat to control tank pressure. The factors to consider in designing such a balanced system, are presented. An example of a minimum system design is presented along with examples of laboratory-tested hardware.

Regulatory and Policy Considerations for the Reuse and End-of-Life Management of Solar and Batteries in the U.S.

The demand for solar photovoltaics (PV) and lithium-ion batteries (LIB) is expected to continue in the U.S. as the call for solar is projected to quadruple by 2030 to meet renewable energy and decarbonization goals. The expected demand for PV and LIB brings supply chain concerns and a growing need for a circular economy for PV and LIB materials. Domestic reuse and recycling is one potential circular economy solution for PV and LIB. This presentation explores the current U.S. law and regulatory landscape for the reuse and recycling of PV and LIB materials, and how certain policy frameworks impact reuse and end-of-life management decisions for PV and LIB materials.

Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms

The “Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms” project focuses on exploring alternative power converter and system-level plant configurations to achieve the lowest cost and highest energy output for a given solar plus storage (e.g., PV + battery) plant, including the use of medium voltage (MV) collection while taking into account detailed models of all elements. To realize this objective, four approaches were utilized (i) employ a novel Medium Voltage String Inverter (MVSI) topology (soft switching solid state transformer – S4T) to convert 1000 Vdc to 4.16 kVac; (ii) plant collection using standard, low-cost overhead MV distribution network; (iii) enable energy storage integration without additional converter cost to achieve dispatchability of the PV resource; and (iv) provide advanced functionality (autonomous operation, track ISO signals for dynamic balancing and ancillary services, and PV farm operation as a virtual grid resource). Subsequently and in alignment with the previously mentioned approaches, the project was structured in five efforts (i) S4T MVSI simulation and design; (ii) system analysis and storage optimization; (iii) financial analysis; (iv) power converter prototype build and test; and (v) regulatory and commercial impact study. The outcomes provided by each effort can be summarized as follows (i) Project explored the use of MV AC distribution architecture for hybrid PV+storage utility-scale PV farms; (ii) Detailed loss and LCOE analysis for AC and DC side BESS architecture, including multiple converter topologies, as well as for proposed MVSI/MDCT systems; (iii) MVSI was built and holds promise but needs lower-cost high-voltage Si-C devices, which does not seem possible in the near term; (iv) MDCT provides a simpler modular building block – validated through HIL and farm level modeling, simulation and experimental validation; (v) 300 kVA MDCT prototype built and tested, technology is being commercialized; and (vi) Regulatory model of utility building PV plants, where PV panels are treated as DC generation (IPP), seems viable and can allow improved grid integration.

Grid connection barriers to renewable energy deployment in the United States

Bulk-power grid connection is an emerging bottleneck to the entry of wind, solar, and storage but has been understudied due to a lack of data. We create and analyze two novel interconnection datasets with more than 38,000 project-level observations that provide new information documenting interconnection challenges in the United States. Active grid connection requests are more than double the total installed capacity of the US power plant fleet (2,600 vs. 1,280 GW). The time required to secure a connection has increased by 70% over the last decade, and withdrawal rates remain high at 80%, suggesting a constrained transmission system that jeopardizes energy transition targets. Wide distributions of interconnection costs indicate the inherent uncertainty of the interconnection process. Interconnection requests that identify large transmission upgrades tend to withdraw from the process. These findings suggest the need for interconnection reforms, tighter links between long-term transmission planning and project-level interconnection processes, and more interconnection outcome transparency.

Development of a phase-change thermal storage system using modified anhydrous sodium hydroxide for solar electric power generation

A thermal storage system for use in solar power electricity generation was investigated analytically and experimentally. The thermal storage medium is principally anhydrous NaOH with 8% NaNO3 and 0.2% MnO2. Heat is charged into storage at 584 K and discharged from storage at 582 K by Therminol-66. Physical and thermophysical properties of the storage medium were measured. A mathematical simulation and computer program describing the operation of the system were developed. A 1/10 scale model of a system capable of storing and delivering 3.1 x 10 to the 6th power kJ of heat was designed, built, and tested. Tests included steady state charging, discharging, idling, and charge-discharge conditions simulating a solar daily cycle. Experimental data and computer-predicted results are correlated. A reference design including cost estimates of the full-size system was developed.

Sustainable Solar Energy for Hughes Village (Hudotl’eekkaakk’e Tribe) (Final Technical Report)

Hughes Village Council is the local Tribal government for Hughes, Alaska. With the funding from this project, the Village Council designed and installed a 120kW solar Photo Voltaic (PV) array with a 250 kW/335kWh lithium-ion battery bank that has offset diesel consumption in the community by an estimated 10% per year. This translates to approximately 6,000 gallons of fuel per year. The goal is to reduce diesel consumption and turn the diesel generators off for certain periods of the Alaskan summer when solar PV is abundant and electrical loads in the community are low. Daily generator logs from the community show an average load of approximately 50kW-60kW with peaks ranging from 100kW-160kW. This project aligns with the tribe’s mission to work towards tribal energy sovereignty, utilizing sustainable energy technologies, and their overall goal of 25% clean energy by 2025.
