Small-scale Assessment of Simplified Ceramic Waste Form Processing

The feasibility of directly processing glass-bonded sodalite ceramic waste form materials by heating a mixture of Zeolite 4A, chloride salt, and sodium borosilicate binder glass was demonstrated by generating laboratory-scale materials. This direct processing method eliminates pre-setting the moisture content of the Zeolite 4A, eliminates the step of occluding salt in the prepared Zeolite 4A prior to processing, and can be conducted using larger particle sizes of crushed Zeolite 4A and crushed borosilicate glass than those called for in the current method. These simplifications are expected to facilitate material transfer and handling in a hot cell or controlled atmosphere environment and be more readily implemented at large scale than the current method. Most materials made to assess these simplifications were directly processed at 925 °C for two hours in an argon atmosphere glovebox, but one material was processed at 925 °C for four hours and one material was processed at 880 °C for two hours. Sodalite was generated and became microencapsulated by the binder glass in all materials. The microstructures were uniform throughout each product, were similar in all products, and were similar to the microstructures of materials made previously using the pressureless consolidation or hot isostatic pressing methods. Various formulations showed the efficiency of sodalite generation was not sensitive to the salt-to-Zeolite 4A ratio or salt-to-glass mass ratio, although a greater relative mass of glass is required to encapsulate sodalite generated from large particles of aggregated Zeolite 4A. The upper limit of salt loadings that can be effectively processed remains to be determined. The effectiveness of direct processing provided new insights into the conversion mechanism. The salt was likely dissolved into the glass that transported NaCl into the Zeolite 4A aggregates and sodalite was generated in situ as NaCl migrated from the outside of the aggregate inward. Other salt cations (e.g., potassium, strontium, cesium, and probably lithium) remain dissolved in the glass encapsulating the zeolite/sodalite domains. When the glass solidifies during cooling, small halite inclusion phases form in glass within sodalite domains and large mixed salt inclusions form in glass surrounding the sodalite due to the low solubility of chloride in the (solid) glass. Other salt cations were oxidized during processing and formed inclusions in the bulk glass (e.g., neodymium). Initial degradation tests show the dissolution behavior of directly processed CWF (SCWF) materials is similar to CWF materials made using different methods.

Multi-component Dark Matter and small scale structure formation

We consider the evolution of non-thermal dark matter perturbations in models which contain both Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and axions. Using constraints from existing observations we examine the percentage of WIMPs and axions that may comprise the cosmological dark matter budget in models with an Early Matter Dominated Epoch (EMDE) — where entropy production is important. After carefully tracking the thermal evolution of the various species by solving the Boltzmann equations, we consider the enhancement of perturbations that may have led to early structure formation for axions and WIMPs. We investigate the impact of enhanced perturbations on the parameter space of both species, after imposing existing constraints from indirect detection experiments. Given these constraints we establish the feasibility of axions to form miniclusters in the early universe in EMDEs for a given percentage of allowed WIMPs. We find that EMDEs with low reheat temperatures near the BBN limit are preferred for axion minicluster formation. When the EMDE is caused by string moduli, the WIMP contribution to the relic density is set by the moduli branching to dark matter at the level of ≲ $\mathcal{O}$ (10 −4 ).

SPLENDAQ: A Detector-Agnostic Data Acquisition System for Small-Scale Physics Experiments

Many scientific applications from rare-event searches to condensed matter system characterization to high-rate nuclear experiments require time-domain triggering on a raw stream of data, where the triggering is generally threshold-based or randomly acquired. When carrying out detector R &D, there is a need for a general data acquisition (DAQ) system to quickly and efficiently process such data. In the SPLENDOR collaboration, we are developing the Python-based SPLENDAQ package for this exact purpose—it offers two main features for offline analysis of continuous data: a threshold triggering algorithm based on the time-domain optimal filter formalism and an algorithm for randomly choosing nonoverlapping segments for noise measurements. Further, combined with the commercially available Moku platform, developed by Liquid Instruments, we have a full pipeline of event building off raw data with minimal setup. Here, we review the underlying principles of this detector-agnostic DAQ package and give concrete examples of its utility in various applications.

Influence of microstructural heterogeneities on small-scale mechanical properties of an additively manufactured Al-Ce-Ni-Mn alloy

Laser powder bed fusion-based additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising method to fabricate creep-resistant Al-rare earth alloys (Al-Ce-Ni-Mn) with stable microstructures at up to 400°C. However, creep testing of these alloys at high temperatures shows that void coalescence and failure initiation occurs along the melt pool boundaries in the microstructure. Hence it is crucial to understand how the local mechanical behavior of the melt pool boundaries would influence the global properties of the AM produced alloy. In this study, in situ nanoindentation conducted at room temperature and 300°C revealed a reduced hardness at the melt pool boundaries. Similarly, micro-pillar compression showed a slight decline in yield strength at these boundaries, indicating that they are the weak spots in the microstructure. Such multimodal local mechanical property studies are necessary for understanding the influence of melt pool boundaries on the bulk response of fusion-based AM alloys.

The impact of infill percentage and layer height in small-scale material extrusion on porosity and tensile properties

We report material extrusion additive manufacturing is prone to introducing porosity within the structure due to the layer-by-layer construction using elliptical beads of material. This open porosity ultimately plays a role in determining the mechanical properties of printed parts. The shape, size, and amount of porosity within a printed part is influenced by a variety of factors, including nozzle diameter, infill percentage, layer height, raster orientation, and print speed. While several studies have investigated these and other parameters’ effects on mechanical performance and porosity, better understanding the interconnected relationships is crucial in balancing the various input parameters to achieve maximum strength. This work initially examined the influence of key print parameters (infill percentage and layer height) on the internal porosity of a printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) part. Then, the print parameters and internal porosity were statistically correlated to final mechanical properties. Porosity was further classified as either open or closed to differentiate between connected voids in the mesostructure from isolated voids within the material itself. Mechanical performance increased with an increasing density and infill percentage, displaying a 224 % increase in elastic modulus and a 150 % increase in ultimate tensile strength. The contribution of layer height was found to be conditional upon the infill percentage.

Experimental investigation of the small-scale prototype of the dew point water recovery system

The article presents experimental investigation of the Dew Point Water Recovery (DPWR) system designed for clean water recovery using the dew point cooling phenomenon. The technology is a novel distillation process which allows for highly efficient water recovery. It is a first distillation technology which allows for water distillation through direct contact with atmospheric air. The authors designed, built, and tested an original prototype of a laboratory-scale DPWR system to verify its basic operating principles and perform performance analysis. It was shown that on average 10 × 10 −6 m 3 of clean water could be recovered from each cubic meter of the supply air with an average GOR of 1.9. Although the operation of the DPWR system requires electricity to drive fans, pumps and other associated equipment, the actual driving force of the system is thermal energy. The average thermal energy demand of the DPWR system was 370 kWh/m 3 , and more than half of this energy was based on the thermodynamic potential of the supply air. Based on experimental data, the mathematical model of the DPWR system was verified and it was found that the average relative discrepancy in predicting air temperature did not exceed 8%, and in predicting air humidity: 5%. In conclusion, the conducted experiments confirmed that the proposed DPWR system is feasible and has the potential to fill the technological gap in terms of a low-energy and easily accessible water recovery method.

Indirectly probing the structural change in ion-irradiated Zr-Based metallic glasses from small scale mechanical tests

Ion irradiation was applied to tailor the structural heterogeneities in Zr-based metallic glasses at room temperature. Experimental methods of X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, and micropillar compression were conducted to examine the irradiation effects on their structural and mechanical property changes. It is found that the irradiated materials retained amorphous structure after room-temperature Ni ion irradiation. The reduction of elastic modulus and hardness measured by nanoindentation indicated the irradiation-induced mechanical degradation. A unified statistic model was employed to quantitatively predict the density and strength of irradiation defects, although their specific structural and physical nature is not explicitly included in this model. The transition of non-intersecting shear bands to multiple intersecting shear bands was observed on compression tests of irradiated micropillars with the increase of irradiation dose. Furthermore, the analysis of the displacement excursion of micropillar compression tests indicated a different deformation mode from the unirradiated state. These results from nanoindentation pop-in and micro-pillar compression tests suggested that irradiation eventually leads to a new state with different types and characteristics of structural heterogeneities from violent displacement cascades and non-equilibrium energy deposition/dissipation processes, which also proves ion irradiation as an effective method to tune the structure and mechanical properties of metallic glasses.

An analytic hybrid halo + perturbation theory model for small-scale correlators: baryons, halos, and galaxies

In this work, we update Halo Zeldovich Perturbation Theory (HZPT, [1]), an analytic model for the two-point statistics of dark matter, to describe halo and galaxy clustering, and galaxy-matter cross-correlation on nonlinear scales. The model correcting Zeldovich has an analytic Fourier transform, and therefore is valid in both configuration space and Fourier space. The model is accurate at the 2%-level or less for P_mm (k< 1 h/Mpc), P_hm (k< 1 h/Mpc), P_hh (k< 2 h/Mpc), P gm (k< 1 h/Mpc), P gg (k< 1 h/Mpc), ξ mm (r> 1 Mpc/h), ξ hm (r> 2 Mpc/h), ξ hh (r> 2 Mpc/h), ξ gm (r> 1 Mpc/h), ξ gg (r> 2 Mpc/h), for LRG-like mock galaxies. We show that the HZPT model for matter correlators can account for the effects of a wide range of baryonic feedback models and provide two extended dark matter models which are of 1% (3%) accuracy for k < 10 (8) h/Mpc. We explicitly model the non-perturbative features of halo exclusion for the halo-halo and galaxy-galaxy correlators, as well as the presence of satellites for galaxy-matter and galaxy-galaxy correlation functions. We perform density estimation using N-body simulations and a wide range of HOD galaxy mocks to obtain correlations of model parameters with the cosmological parameters Ω m and σ 8 . HZPT can provide a fast, interpretable, and analytic model for combined-probe analyses of redshift surveys using scales well into the non-linear regime.
