Biasing topological charge injection in topological matter

Here we explore the interplay between topologies in the momentum and real spaces to formulate a thermodynamic description of nonequilibrium injection of topological charges under external bias. We show that the edge modes engendered by the momentum-space topology can play a functional role of connecting the external reservoirs to the bulk transport of topological charges in the real space. We illustrate our general results with two examples: the spin-torque injection of skyrmions in an electrically biased integer quantum Hall system, and the vortex injection in a topological $p + ip$ superconductor coupled to heat reservoirs. Based on the universal fractional entropy of the Majorana zero modes bound to the vortices, their controllable injection proposed in this work could provide a route for creating and manipulating Majorana fermions.

Langevin dynamics of generalized spins as SU( N ) coherent states

Classical models of spin systems traditionally retain only the dipole moments, but a quantum spin state will frequently have additional structure. Spins of magnitude S have N = 2⁢S + 1 levels. Alternatively, the spin state is fully characterized by a set of N 2 - 1 local physical observables, which we interpret as generalized spin components. For example, a spin with S = 1 has three dipole components and five quadrupole components. Further, these components evolve under a generalization of the classical Landau-Lifshitz dynamics, which can be extended with noise and damping terms. In this paper, we reformulate the dynamical equations of motion as a Langevin dynamics of SU(N) coherent states in the Schrödinger picture. This viewpoint is especially useful as the basis for an efficient numerical method to sample spin configurations in thermal equilibrium and to simulate the relaxation and driven motion of topological solitons. To illustrate the approach, we simulate a nonequilibrium relaxation process that creates CP 2 skyrmions, which are topological defects with both dipole and quadrupole character.

Transferring orbital angular momentum to an electron beam reveals toroidal and chiral order

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) and torque transfer play central roles in a wide range of magnetic textures and devices including skyrmions and spin-torque electronics. Analogous topological structures are now also being explored in ferroelectrics, including polarization vortex arrays in ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices. Unlike magnetic toroidal order, electric toroidal order does not couple directly to linear external fields. Instead, we find that the presence of an electric toroidal moment in a ferrorotational phase transfers measurable torque and OAM to a localized electron beam in the ballistic limit. We record these torque transfers from a high-energy electron beam using a momentum-resolved detector. This approach provides a high-sensitivity method to detect polarization fields and their more complex order parameters and topologies. In addition to toroidal order, we also demonstrate high-precision measurements of vorticity and chirality for polar vortexlike phases.

Large anomalous Nernst effect and topological Nernst effect in the noncollinear antiferromagnet NdMn 2⁢ Ge 2

ThCr 2 Si 2 -type NdMn 2 Ge 2 was recently proposed to be a magnetic skyrmion candidate exhibiting the topological Hall effect. In this work, we report magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric measurements for NdMn 2 Ge 2 single crystals. We show that, in the canted antiferromagnetic phase and the conical magnetic phase with a large out-of-plane ferromagnetic component, this system exhibits both an anomalous Nernst effect and a topological Nernst effect. Here we argue that NdMn 2 Ge 2 is a unique magnetic material, with its topological characteristics associated with the Berry phases in both real space and momentum space.

Enhancement of magnetic domain wall velocity via resonant dissipation of standing wave modes of domain wall structure with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

The dynamic behaviors of magnetic domain walls have significant implications for developing advanced spintronic devices. In this study, we investigate the intriguing resonance phenomenon within the magnetic domain wall structure, focusing on the dissipation mechanism and its impact on domain wall dynamic motion. By applying a static external magnetic field, we observe a remarkable amplification of domain wall velocity through the resonant excitations of the flexure modes. The resonance of the flexure mode exerts an indirect influence on the domain wall velocity through energy dissipation, leading to a significant enhancement from the predictions of the one-dimensional Walker model. We establish a robust model platform rooted in energy dissipation allows comprehensive understanding the dramatic enhancement of domain wall velocity observed during width-directional flexure mode resonance. By directly quantifying energy dissipation, our approach provides highly effective and accurate estimates of domain wall velocity, surpassing previous methods that focus solely on the instantaneous dynamics of the domain wall structure. These findings offer crucial insights into the fundamental mechanisms governing the dynamics of domain walls and other magnetic systems, such as magnetic skyrmions, bubbles, and magnetic vortices, paving the way for development and optimization of next-generation spintronic devices.

Topological Hall-like behavior of multidomain ferromagnets

Here, we investigate the emergence of topological Hall-like signals in disordered multidomain ferromagnets. Nonmonotonic behavior in Hall resistivity, commonly attributed to topological spin textures such as skyrmions, is produced in a random resistor network model without any chirality. It arises from simple mechanisms of the anomalous Hall effect in combination with the domain wall scattering. By varying domain configurations and domain wall resistances, we explore the conditions under which the nonmonotonic resistivity can be enhanced. Our results emphasize the need for careful analysis in distinguishing between true topological Hall effects and artifacts caused by domain disorders.

Spin-orbit correlations in the nucleon in the large- N c limit

We study the twist-3 spin-orbit correlations of quarks described by the nucleon matrix elements of the parity-odd rank-2 tensor QCD operator (the parity-odd partner of the QCD energy-momentum tensor). Our treatment is based on the effective dynamics emerging from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and the mean-field picture of the nucleon in the large- N c limit. The twist-3 QCD operators are converted to effective operators, in which the QCD interactions are replaced by spin-flavor-dependent chiral interactions of the quarks with the pion field. We compute the nucleon matrix elements of the twist-3 effective operators and discuss the role of the chiral interactions in the spin-orbit correlations. We derive the first-quantized representation in the mean-field picture and develop a quantum-mechanical interpretation. The chiral interactions give rise to new spin-orbit couplings and qualitatively change the correlations compared to the quark model picture. We also derive the twist-3 matrix elements in the topological soliton picture where the quarks are integrated out (skyrmion). The methods used here can be extended to other QCD operators describing higher-twist nucleon structure and generalized parton distributions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

SU(3) Topology of Magnon-Phonon Hybridization in 2D Antiferromagnets

Magnon-phonon hybrid excitations are studied theoretically in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with an easy axis normal to the plane. In this work, we show that two magnon bands and one phonon band are intertwined by the magnetoelastic coupling through a nontrivial SU(3) topology, which can be intuitively perceived by identifying a skyrmion structure in the momentum space. Our results are insensitive to lattice details and generally applicable to two-dimensional antiferromagnets. We show this by developing a continuum theory as the long-wavelength approximation to the tight-binding model. The theoretical results can be probed by measuring the thermal Hall conductance as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field. We envision that the magnetoelastic coupling in antiferromagnets can be a promising venue in search of various topological excitations, which cannot be found in magnetic or elastic models alone.

Competing Magnetic Interactions in the Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound MnBi 2 Te 4 is suggested to be the first realization of an AFM topological insulator. Here, we report on inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions in MnBi 2 Te 4 that possess ferromagnetic triangular layers with AFM interlayer coupling. The spin waves display a large spin gap and pairwise exchange interactions within the triangular layer are long ranged and frustrated by large next-nearest neighbor AFM exchange. The degree of frustration suggests proximity to a variety of magnetic phases, potentially including skyrmion phases, which could be accessed in chemically tuned compounds or upon the application of symmetry-breaking fields.

Interfacial Rashba-Effect-Induced Anisotropy in Nonmagnetic-Material–Ferrimagnetic-Insulator Bilayers

Interfacial magnetic anisotropy in magnetic insulators has been largely unexplored. Recently, interface-induced skyrmions and electrical control of magnetization have been discovered in insulator-based heterostructures, which demand a thorough understanding of interfacial interactions in these materials. We observe a substantial, tunable interfacial magnetic anisotropy between Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 epitaxial thin films and fifteen nonmagnetic materials spanning a significant portion of the periodic table, which we attribute to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Our results show a clear distinction between nonmagnetic capping layers from the d-block and the p-block. Finally, this work offers a new path for controlling magnetic phases in magnetic insulators for low-loss spintronic applications.

Spin Reversal of a Quantum Hall Ferromagnet at a Landau Level Crossing

When Landau levels (LLs) become degenerate near the Fermi energy in the quantum Hall regime, interaction effects can drastically modify the electronic ground state. Here, we study the quantum Hall ferromagnet formed in a two-dimensional hole gas around the LL filling factor v = 1 in the vicinity of a LL crossing in the heave-hole valence band. Cavity spectroscopy in the strong-coupling regime allows us to optically extract the spin polarization of the two-dimensional hole gas. By analyzing this polarization as a function of hole density and magnetic field, we observe a spin flip of the ferromagnet. Furthermore, the depolarization away from v = 1 accelerates close to the LL crossing. This is indicative of an increase in the size of skyrmion excitations as the effective Zeeman energy vanishes at the LL crossing.

Bloch Chirality Induced by an Interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in Ferromagnetic Multilayers

Chiral spin textures stabilized by the interfacial Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, such as skyrmions and homochiral domain walls, have been shown to exhibit qualities that make them attractive for their incorporation in a variety of spintronic devices. However, for thicker multilayer films, mixed textures occur in which an achiral Bloch component coexists with a chiral Néel component of the domain wall to reduce the demagnetization field at the film surface. We show that an interlayer Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction can break the degeneracy between Bloch chiralities. We further find large population asymmetries and chiral branching in the Bloch component of the domain walls in well-ordered Co/Pd multilayers. This asymmetry is a result of the combined effect of the demagnetization field and an interlayer Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, and is strongly related to film thickness and structural ordering. This work paves the way toward the utilization of this effect toward controlling Bloch chirality in magnetic multilayers.

Magnon Landau Levels and Spin Responses in Antiferromagnets

We study gauge fields produced by gradients of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and propose a model of an AFM topological insulator of magnons. In the long wavelength limit, the Landau levels induced by the inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction exhibit relativistic physics described by the Klein-Gordon equation. The spin Nernst response due to the formation of magnonic Landau levels is compared to similar topological responses in skyrmion and vortex-antivortex crystal phases of AFM insulators. Here, our studies show that AFM insulators exhibit rich physics associated with topological magnon excitations.

Field-Driven Dynamics of Magnetic Hopfions

Herein, we present micromagnetic simulations on resonant spin wave modes of magnetic Hopfions up to 15 GHz driven by external magnetic fields. A sharp transition is found around 32 mT coinciding with a transition from Hopfions to magnetic torons. Furthermore, the modes exhibit characteristic amplitudes in frequency space accompanied by unique localization patterns in real space, and are found to be robust to damping around topological features, particularly vortex lines in Hopfions and Bloch points in torons. The marked differences in spin wave spectra between Hopfions, torons and target skyrmions can serve as fingerprints in future experimental validation studies of these novel 3d topological spin textures.

Robust Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism near a Gate-Tuned ν = 1 Landau Level Crossing

In a low-disorder two-dimensional electron system, when two Landau levels of opposite spin or pseudospin cross at the Fermi level, the dominance of the exchange energy can lead to a ferromagnetic, quantum Hall ground state whose gap is determined by the exchange energy and has skyrmions as its excitations. This is normally achieved via applying either hydrostatic pressure or uniaxial strain. Here, we study here a very high-quality, low-density, two-dimensional hole system, confined to a 30-nm-wide (001) GaAs quantum well, in which the two lowest-energy Landau levels can be gate tuned to cross at and near filling factor v = 1. As we tune the field position of the crossing from one side of v = 1 to the other by changing the hole density, the energy gap for the quantum Hall state at v =1 remains exceptionally large, and only shows a small dip near the crossing. The gap overall follows a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence, expected for the exchange energy. Our data are consistent with a robust quantum Hall ferromagnet as the ground state.

Theory of Defect-Induced Crystal Field Perturbations in Rare-Earth Magnets

We present a theory describing the single-ion anisotropy of rare-earth (RE) magnets in the presence of point defects. Taking the RE-lean 1 ∶ 12 magnet class as a prototype, we use first-principles calculations to show how the introduction of Ti substitutions into SmFe 12 perturbs the crystal field, generating new coefficients due to the lower symmetry of the RE environment. We then demonstrate that these perturbations can be described extremely efficiently using a screened point charge model. We provide analytical expressions for the anisotropy energy that can be straightforwardly implemented in atomistic spin dynamics simulations, meaning that such simulations can be carried out for an arbitrary arrangement of point defects. The significant crystal field perturbations calculated here demonstrate that a sample that is single phase from a structural point of view can nonetheless have a dramatically varying anisotropy profile at the atomistic level if there is compositional disorder, which may influence localized magnetic objects like domain walls or skyrmions. Two-channel anomalous Hall effect in SrRuO 3

The Hall effect in SrRuO 3 thin films near the thickness limit for ferromagnetism shows an extra peak in addition to the ordinary and anomalous Hall effects. This extra peak has been attributed to a topological Hall effect due to two-dimensional skyrmions in the film around the coercive field; however, the sign of the anomalous Hall effect in SrRuO 3 can change as a function of saturation magnetization. Here we report Hall peaks in SrRuO 3 in which volumetric magnetometry measurements and magnetic force microscopy indicate that the peaks result from the superposition of two anomalous Hall channels with opposite sign. These channels likely form due to thickness variations in SrRuO 3 , creating two spatially separated magnetic regions with different saturation magnetizations and coercive fields. Overall, the results are central to the development of strongly correlated materials for spintronics.
