Ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline self-assembly of mesogen-free sulfonylated side-chain chiral polyethers and their high dielectric property

To achieve large spontaneous polarization for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, we have designed a series of mesogen-free isotactic polyethers with sulfonylated side chains. Different from prior studies using linear alkyl side chains, in this work a methyl branch was implemented in the alkyl side chains of the chiral polyethers. As a result of the continuous twist from the methyl branches and strong dipole-dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups, a helical chain conformation with tilted side chains was achieved. When the branched side chains were short (e.g., C5) and double chirality existed in both the main chain and side chains, a crystalline structure was obtained. When the branched side chains were long (e.g., ≥ C8) and single chirality existed in the main chain, an ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase was induced. Their high-field dielectric property was studied by electric displacement-electric field (D-E) loop tests; however, no ferroelectric behavior was observed up to 200 MV/m. It was considered that the dipole-dipole interaction among neighboring sulfonyl groups in the helical chains was too strong to allow easy ferroelectric flipping.

Coarse-grained simulation of colloidal self-assembly, cation exchange, and rheology in Na/Ca smectite clay gels

Knowledge Gap: The aggregation of clay minerals—layered silicate nanoparticles—strongly impacts fluid flow, solute migration, and solid mechanics in soils, sediments, and sedimentary rocks. Experimental and computational characterization of clay aggregation is inhibited by the delicate water-mediated nature of clay colloidal interactions and by the range of spatial scales involved, from 1 nm thick platelets to flocs with dimensions up to micrometers or more. Simulations: Using a new coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) approach, we predicted the microstructure, dynamics, and rheology of hydrated smectite (more precisely, montmorillonite) clay gels containing up to 2,000 clay platelets on length scales up to 0.1 μm. Further, simulations investigated the impact of simulation time, platelet diameters (6 to 25nm), and the ratio of Na to Ca exchangeable cations on the assembly of tactoids (i.e., stacks of parallel clay platelets) and larger aggregates (i.e., assemblages of tactoids). We analyzed structural features including tactoid size and size distribution, basal spacing, counterion distribution in the electrical double layer, clay association modes, and the rheological properties of smectite gels. Findings: Our results demonstrate new potential to characterize and understand clay aggregation in dilute suspensions and gels on a scale of thousands of particles with explicit representation of counterion clouds and with accuracy approaching that of all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. For example, our simulations predict the strong impact of Na/Ca ratio on clay tactoid formation and the shear-thinning rheology of clay gels.

Anisotropic optical and magnetic response in self-assembled TiN–CoFe 2 nanocomposites

Transition metal nitrides (e.g., TiN) have shown tremendous promise in optical metamaterials for nanophotonic devices due to their plasmonic properties comparable to noble metals and superior high temperature stability. Vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs) offer a great platform for combining two dissimilar functional materials with a one-step deposition technique toward multifunctionality integration and strong structural/property anisotropy. Here, we report a two-phase nanocomposite design combining ferromagnetic CoFe 2 nanosheets in the plasmonic TiN matrix as a new hybrid plasmonic metamaterial. The hybrid metamaterials exhibit anisotropic optical and magnetic responses, as well as a pronounced magneto-optical coupling response evidenced by Magneto-optic Kerr Effect measurement, owing to the novel vertically aligned structure. This work demonstrates a new TiN-based metamaterial with anisotropic properties and multifunctionality toward light polarization modulation, optical switching, and integrated optics.
