Chapter 8: Fluids: liquid crystals—self-assembly of the superlarge and superweak active clothing

At the suggestion of NASA’s Physical Science Research Program in the Space Life and Physical Science Research and Application Division, Paul Chaikin, Noel Clark, and Sidney Nagel organized a focus session and workshop for the 2020 American Physical Society (APS) March meeting under the auspices of the Division of Soft Matter. Three overarching themes emerged from the workshop and are presented with additional details: • Machines made out of machines • Scalable self-sustaining ecosystems • Active materials and metamaterials This report lays out only some of the potential directions for soft matter dynamics over the next two decades. It also lays out the role that gravity plays in the organization of the basic building blocks of matter. Not only will research on soft matter have tremendous application towards understanding its behavior in our terrestrial environment, but also potentially in other NASA programs such as planetary science, exploration, robotics, etc. The attached is a White Paper for the Decadal Survey that consists of an extended Title along with the previous Introduction and Chapter 2.8 from NASA/CP-20205010493.

The structure of fly Teneurin-m reveals an asymmetric self-assembly that allows expansion into zippers

Teneurins are conserved cell adhesion molecules essential for embryogenesis and neural development in animals. Key to teneurin function is the ability of its extracellular region to form homophilic interactions in cis and/or in trans. However, our molecular understanding of teneurin homophilic interaction remains largely incomplete. Here, we showed that an extracellular fragment of Teneurin-m, the major teneurin homolog in flies, behaves as a homodimer in solution. The structure of Teneurin-m revealed that the transthyretin-related domain from one protomer and the β-propeller domain from the other mediates Teneurin-m self-association, which is abolished by point mutation of conserved residues. Strikingly, this architecture generates an asymmetric oligomerization interface that enables expansion of Teneurin-m into long zipper arrays reminiscent of protocadherins. An alternatively spliced site that exists only in vertebrates and regulates homophilic interaction in mammalian teneurins overlaps with the fly Teneurin-m self-association interface. Our work provides a molecular understanding of teneurin homophilic interaction and sheds light on its role in teneurin function throughout evolution.

Self‐Assembly and Oriented Growth of Conductive Ni‐CAT‐1 Metal‐Organic Framework at Solid–Liquid Interfaces

Abstract Two‐dimensional (2D) conductive metal‐organic frameworks (MOF) represent a unique class of electrode materials with high capacity and power density. Understanding molecular mechanisms and pathways for heterogeneous nucleation of 2D π‐conjugated MOFs is highly desirable for controlling the structure and properties of conductive MOFs on solid substrates. Herein, a systematic study of nucleation and growth of 2D π‐conjugated Ni‐catecholate (Ni‐CAT‐1) MOFs on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and copper substrates is reported. It is discovered that the nucleation density and growth kinetics of the MOF film can be controlled by varying substrate interactions with the organic linker. Specifically, π–π interactions between the linker and the HOPG dictate lower nucleation density, whereas π–metal interactions between the linker and the copper substrate dictate faster nucleation and higher nucleation densities. These studies reveal the key mechanism for Ni‐CAT‐1 nucleation on different surfaces and provide insights into interfacial control over the growth of other 2D π‐conjugated MOF films on solid substrates to inform synthesis of functional materials.

Surface Energy Modulated Self‐Assembly of Percolative Gallium Nanodroplet Films for Stretchable Electronics

Advancements in soft robotics and wearable technologies have led to an increased need for flexible and stretchable electronic systems. Liquid metals like Gallium (Ga) and its alloys offer high potential in the field of stretchable electronics and photonics due to their inherent high conductivity and malleability. However, their high surface tension and native oxide formation hinder uniform wetting and continuous film formation to get conducting films. Here, we report a fabrication strategy to realize electrically conductive Ga thin films with effective thicknesses around 100 nm on polymeric and elastomeric substrates. By enhancing the surface energy of the elastomer, we create uniform Ga nanodroplets capable of sustaining stretchability up to 200% strain. Our devices exhibit electronic conduction primarily through tunneling and display strain tunable piezoresistive characteristics, which are explained using Kirchhoff's resistive network and Simmon's analytical tunneling current model. To showcase the device's capability in fields of stretchable electronics, we demonstrate several functional prototypes, including flexible devices integrated with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), curvature and pressure sensors, and soft robotic grippers capable of sensing object curvature. The demonstrated devices highlight the potential of this approach for scalable integration of stretchable electronics in soft robotic and wearable platforms.

Supramolecular Self-Assembled Multi-Electron-Acceptor Organic Molecule as High-Performance Cathode Material for Li-Ion Batteries

Organic electrode materials possess many advantages such as low toxicity, sustainability, and chemical/structural tunability toward high energy density. However, to compete with inorganic-based compounds, crucial aspects such as redox potential, capacity, cycling stability, and electronic conductivity need to be improved. Herein, a comprehensive strategy on the molecular design of small organic electron-acceptor-molecule—hexaazatrianthranylene (HATA) embedded quinone (HATAQ) is reported. By introducing conjugated quinone moieties into the electron-deficient hexaazatriphenylene-derivative core, HATAQ with highly extended π-conjugation can yield extra-high capacity for lithium storage, delivering a capacity of 426 mAh g -1 at 200 mA g -1 (0.4C). At an extremely high rate of 10 A g -1 (19C), a reversible capacity of 209 mAh g -1 corresponding to nearly 85% retention is obtained after 1000 cycles. A unique network of unconventional lock-and-key hydrogen bonds in the solid-state facilitates favorable supramolecular 2D layered arrangement, enhancing cycling stability. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the capacity and rate capability of HATAQ are found to be the best ever reported for organic small-molecule-based cathodes. Finally, these results together with density functional theory studies provide proof-of-concept that the design strategy is promising for the development of organic electrodes with exceptionally high energy density, rate capability, and cycling stability.

Self‐Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well‐defined one‐handed double‐helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template‐free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time‐dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod‐like aggregates into the double‐helical microstructures. We have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor ( g lum ) up to ≈0.01.

Gramicidin and chlorhexidine encapsulated in bicontinuous microemulsions: Antimicrobial activity performance and their impact on self‐assembly

The utility of bicontinuous microemulsions (BMEs) as carriers of the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) gramicidin D and antiseptic chlorhexidine was investigated for possible topical delivery to chronic wounds. The two water-insoluble solutes dissolved in pre-formed one-phase BMEs of Water/Polysorbate 80/Limonene/Ethanol/Glycerol and Water/Aerosol-OT (AOT)/Polysorbate 85/Isopropyl Myristate and an AOT/Polysorbate 85 Winsor-III system, achieving gramicidin and chlorhexidine concentrations of 1.0 wt% and 0.5% individually and 0.5% and 0.3% in mixtures at 22°C, respectively. Small-angle neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that both solutes decreased surfactant interfacial activity and increased interfacial fluidity for the Polysorbate 80 system. For the AOT/Polysorbate 85 systems, ellipsoidal aggregates consisting of gramicidin and likely adsorbed surfactant and oil formed, while chlorhexidine enhanced the surface activity of surfactants. According to bioassays performed on artificial skin, the incorporation of melittin, gramicidin, and chlorhexidine in general enhanced the bioactivity of Polysorbate 80 BMEs for 24 h treatment against relevant antibiotic-resistant bacteria found on skin relative to controls. Yet, BME treatments were less effective than aqueous melittin control, in contrast to well diffusion bioassays performed previously. The results reflect the strong impact of AMPs and antiseptics on BME structure and dynamics and the complexity of formulating BMEs for optimal antimicrobial activity.

Smectic C Self‐Assembly in Mesogen‐Free Liquid Crystalline Chiral Polyethers with Sulfonylated Methyl‐Branched Side Chains

Abstract To realize advanced electrical applications for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, high spontaneous polarization ( P s ) is highly desired. However, current ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers usually exhibit a low P s . In this work, mesogen‐free, chiral polyethers containing sulfonylated methyl‐branched alkyl side chains with a (CH 2 ) 3 O spacer between the sulfonyl and the branched alkyl groups are designed and synthesized. In contrast to the linear n ‐alkyl side chains, the methyl‐branched alkyl side chains induce chain tilting in the smectic layers. When double chirality exists in both the main chain and the side chains, a crystalline structure is observed after mechanical stretching. Intriguingly, when single chirality exists in either the backbone or the side chains, a liquid crystalline smectic C phase is obtained. The electric displacement–electric field study, however, does not show typical ferroelectric switching, although the dielectric constants are relatively high for these liquid crystalline polymers. This is likely because the dipole–dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups along the main chain are so strong that the ferroelectric switching is hindered in the samples. For the future work, it is desired to weaken the dipole–dipole interaction to achieve ferroelectricity in these mesogen‐free liquid crystalline polymers.

Nitride-Oxide-Metal Heterostructure with Self-Assembled Core–Shell Nanopillar Arrays: Effect of Ordering on Magneto-Optical Properties

Magneto-optical (MO) coupling incorporates photon-induced change of magnetic polarization that can be adopted in ultrafast switching, optical isolators, mode convertors, and optical data storage components for advanced optical integrated circuits. However, integrating plasmonic, magnetic, and dielectric properties in one single material system poses challenges since one natural material can hardly possess all these functionalities. Here, co-deposition of a three-phase heterostructure composed of a durable conductive nitride matrix with embedded core–shell vertically aligned nanopillars, is demonstrated. Additionally, the unique coupling between ferromagnetic NiO core and atomically sharp plasmonic Au shell enables strong MO activity out-of-plane at room temperature. Further, a template growth process is applied, which significantly enhances the ordering of the nanopillar array. The ordered nanostructure offers two schemes of spin polarization which result in stronger antisymmetry of Kerr rotation. The presented complex hybrid metamaterial platform with strong magnetic and optical anisotropies is promising for tunable and modulated all-optical-based nanodevices.

Super-Large-Scale Hierarchically Porous Films Based on Self-Assembled Eye-Like Air Pores for High-Performance Daytime Radiative Cooling

Metal-free polymer daytime radiative cooling coatings with hierarchical eye-like air pores are proposed and fabricated with a super-large-scale film-stretching method. The hierarchically porous film (HPF) can be further coated with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) micro-hemispheres, forming coated HPF (cHPF), which do not dramatically change the optical or thermal properties. The cHPF is slightly better with a lower solar absorptivity (2.4%) and a higher thermal emissivity over the atmospheric transparency window (90.1%). The low solar absorptivity is due to the strong scattering of the hierarchical eye-like air pores, while the molecular vibrations and the focusing effect of the PMMA micro-hemispheres contribute to the high emissivity. Further, an average mid-day temperature reduction of 7.92 °C is achieved relative to the air temperature, and the average cooling power reaches 116.0 W m -2 , which are much better than the cooling performances of the commercial cooling cushion. During the day, the cHPF-covered simulated building is up to 6.47 and 4.84 °C cooler than the ambient and the white painted counterpart, respectively. The film is durable and resistant to chemical etching, and very promising to use globally, especially in warm and tropical regions.
