Auxiliary titanium sublimation pump produces ultrahigh /10 to the minus 11 torr/ vacuum

Sublimated titanium as a gettering agent in conjunction with a turbine-type pump provides a two-step procedure for obtaining an ultrahigh vacuum of 10 to the minus 11 torr. The pump alone evacuates the chamber to a pressure of 10 to the minus 9 torr. The residual gas is removed by the gettering agent at a pumping speed of 15 liters per second per square inch.

Flight Operation of a Pump-Fed Liquid-Hydrogen Fuel System

A pump-fed liquid-hydrogen fuel system was developed and flight tested in a B57 bomber. The aircraft was flown to an altitude of 50,000 feet and a Mach number of 0.75 with JP-4 fuel in both engines. One engine was then switched to hydrogen operation for approximately 11 minutes. The liquid-hydrogen pump used for these flights was a five-cylinder positive-displacement type submerged in the bottom of the hydrogen tank. The hydrogen flow regulator was able to maintain a constant engine speed even though pump speed and discharge pressure oscillated.

Hermetically sealed pump

Mechanically simple, hermetically-sealed pump utilizes pumped fluid for lubrication. The rotor, having helical grooves on the outer surface, functions as both a bearing and pump.

Large-capacity pump vaporizer for liquid hydrogen and nitrogen

Pump vaporizer system delivers 500 standard cubic feet per minute of hydrogen or nitrogen, one system delivers both gases. Vacuum-jacketed pump discharges liquid hydrogen or liquid nitrogen into vaporizing system heated by ambient air. Principal characteristics of the flow and discharge system, pump, and vaporizer are given.

Response of a radial-bladed centrifugal pump to sinusoidal disturbances for noncavitating flow

A radial-bladed centrifugal pump was run in water with sinusoidal fluctuations of pressure and flow rate imposed at the pump inlet. Since the flow was noncavitating, zero gain was assumed in computing pump impedance. The inertive reactance became greater than the resistance at relatively low frequencies. An electric circuit model was developed in order to explain the trends of inertance and resistance with frequency.

An experimental study of the cryoentrainment pump and the behavior of nude ionization gauge at low temperature

The use of cryopumping techniques to obtain a contamination free vacuum is discussed. Of those gases that are normally present in an initially air filled vacuum system, only carbon dioxide and water vapor will be effectively pumped at 77 degrees Kelvin. In order to circumvent this restriction on the types of gases that are pumped at this temperature, it is postulated that a gas which is easily condensable at 77 degrees K be injected into the system in the form of a directed stream. The stream would then entrain the normally noncondensable species by a momentum transfer mechanism. After sweeping through the volume to be pumped, the injected gas stream would then be condensed on a cryopumping surface maintained at 77 degrees Kelvin.

Vehicle-scale investigation of a fluorine jet-pump liquid hydrogen tank pressurization system

A comprehensive analytical and experimental program was performed to evaluate the performance of a fluorine-hydrogen jet-pump injector for main tank injection (MTI) pressurization of a liquid hydrogen (LH2) tank. The injector performance during pressurization and LH2 expulsion was determined by a series of seven tests of a full-scale injector and MTI pressure control system in a 28.3 cu m (1000 cu ft) flight-weight LH2 tank. Although the injector did not effectively jet-pump LH2 continuously, it showed improved pressurization performance compared to straight-pipe injectors tested under the same conditions in a previous program. The MTI computer code was modified to allow performance prediction for the jet-pump injector.

Stimulated parametric fluorescence induced by picosecond pump pulses.

Stimulated parametric fluorescence emission tunable over the range from 0.96 to 1.16 microns has been obtained using a barium sodium niobate crystal pumped by a frequency-doubled and mode-locked neodymium:glass laser. The pump radiation in the form of a train of picosecond pulses produced infrared parametric fluorescence pulses, less than 10 psec in duration and with average peak powers on the order of 300 W when pumped with a power density of 300 MW/sq cm.

Study of blade clearance effects on centrifugal pumps

A program of analysis, design, fabrication, and testing has been conducted to develop and experimentally verify analytical models to predict the effects of impeller blade clearance on centrifugal pumps. The effect of tip clearance on pump efficiency, and the relationship between the head coefficient and torque loss with tip clearance was established. Analysis were performed to determine the cost variation in design, manufacture, and test that would occur between unshrouded and shrouded impellers. An impeller, representative of typical rocket engine impellers, was modified by removing its front shroud to permit variation of its blade clearances. It was tested in water with special instrumentation to provide measurements of blade surface pressures during operation. Pump performance data were obtained from tests at various impeller tip clearances. Blade pressure data were obtained at the nominal tip clearance. Comparisons of predicted and measured data are given.

Space simulation ultimate pressure lowered two decades by removal of diffusion pump oil contaminants during operation

The complex problem why large space simulation chambers do not realize the true ultimate vacuum was investigated. Some contaminating factors affecting diffusion pump performance have been identified and some advances in vacuum/distillation/fractionation technology have been achieved which resulted in a two decade or more lower ultimate pressure. Data are presented to show the overall or individual contaminating effect of commonly used phthalate ester plasticizers of 390 to 530 molecular weight on diffusion pump performance. Methods for removing contaminants from diffusion pump silicone oil during operation and reclaiming contaminated oil by high vacuum molecular distillation are described.

Access to uncombined titanium through an inhibiting film in sublimation pumping of deuterium.

Experimental demonstration of the possibility to gain access to sublayers of uncombined titanium through an inhibiting surface film in titanium bulk sublimator pumping by adding a thin layer of titanium to an apparently occluded surface. Though most of the work described was directed toward more effective utilization of titanium in bulk sublimation pumping for small positive-ion accelerators, the results presented should be of interest to others concerned with hydrogen pumping in general and the problems associated with inhibiting films.

Method of investigation of vibroacoustic characteristics of centrifugal pumps

A method for acoustical diagnostics of pumps is described which consists of taking sonograms of the pump, by means of an audio spectrograph. In distinction from usual analyzers, the spectrograph makes it possible to obtain a three-dimensional image of the signal being analyzed, in which its frequency-amplitude characteristics developed over time are depicted with a resolving power of 0.004 sec. As an example, a sonogram of an electrically driven pump, in the 40-4000 Hz frequency range, is presented. The amplitude ratios are determined on the sonogram by the contrast of individual contours, with an accuracy of 6 db.

Results of TC-1 boost pump icing tests in the space power facility

A series of tests were conducted in the space power facility to investigate the failure of the Centaur oxidizer boost pump during the Titan/Centaur proof flight February 11, 1974. The three basic objectives of the tests were: (1) demonstrate if an evaporative freezing type failure mechanism could have prevented the pump from operating, (2) determine if steam from the exhaust of one of the attitude control engine could have entered a pump seal cavity and caused the failure, and (3) obtain data on the heating effects of the exhaust plume from a hydrogen peroxide attitude control engine.

Centaur liquid oxygen boost pump vibration test

The Centaur LOX boost pump was subjected to both the simulated Titan Centaur proof flight and confidence demonstration vibration test levels. For each test level, both sinusoidal and random vibration tests were conducted along each of the three orthogonal axes of the pump and turbine assembly. In addition to these tests, low frequency longitudinal vibration tests for both levels were conducted. All tests were successfully completed without damage to the boost pump.
