Evolution of noncollinear magnetism in magnetocaloric MnPtGa

MnPtGa crystallizes in the hexagonal Ni 2 In structure type in space group P6 3 /mmc and has been reported to display a ferromagnetic Curie temperature near 220K. Here we find a transition near T c = 236 K to a ferromagnetic state, albeit with a reduced moment from what is expected for collinear ordering. The peak magnetocaloric entropy change was determined to be ΔS M = –1.9 J kg –1 K –1 for an applied magnetic field of H = 5 T at the ferromagnetic ordering temperature. Magnetostructural coupling manifests as a change in the slope of the thermal expansion coefficients of the c lattice parameter near T c , with a negative spontaneous volume magnetostriction; ω = –300 ppm at 190K. In this work, neutron powder diffraction studies of the magnetic ground state reveal an evolution in complexity as temperature decreases: from a ferromagnet, to a canted antiferromagnet, to the eventual formation of a spin-density-wave state at low temperatures.

Complex magnetic properties in the mixed 4 f - 5 d double perovskite iridates X 2 ZnIrO 6 ( X = Nd , Sm , Eu , Gd )

Here in this paper, we report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of double perovskites Ln 2 ZnIrO 6 with Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd. These compounds present examples of the rare case of double perovskites (general formula A 2 BB'O6) with a magnetic 4ƒ-ion on the A site in combination with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition-metal ion Ir 4+ on the B sublattice. We discuss the impact of different rare earths on the macroscopic magnetic properties. Gd 2 ZnIrO 6 and Eu 2 ZnIrO 6 show ferrimagnetic or canted antiferromagnetic order below T N = 23 and 12 K, respectively. Sm 2 ZnIrO 6 orders antiferromagnetically at T N = 13 K. Nd 2 ZnIrO 6 exhibits more complex magnetic properties with a strong field dependence ranging from a two-step spin reorientation at μ 0 H = 0.01 T to an antiferromagnetic ground state at intermediate external fields to a spin-flop phase for 0H ≥ 4 T. This unique behavior suggests an interesting interplay between Nd 3+ and Ir 4+ . To further shed light on the relevant magnetic interaction, the zero-field magnetic ground state of Nd 2 ZnIrO 6 is examined via neutron powder diffraction. In general, the magnetic properties of Ln 2 ZnIrO 6 hint towards a substantial contribution of the rare-earth ions and a significant correlation between 5d and 4ƒ magnetism.

Canted antiferromagnetic order in the monoaxial chiral magnets V 1/3 TaS 2 and V 1/3 NbS 2

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is present in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) magnets of form M 1 / 3 T S 2 ( M = 3 d transition metal, T ϵ { Nb , Ta } ), given that the intercalants M form 3 × 3 superlattices within the structure of the parent materials T S 2 and break the centrosymmetry. Competition between DM and ferromagnetic exchange interactions has been shown to stabilize a topological defect known as a chiral soliton in select intercalated TMDCs, initiating interest both in terms of fundamental physics and the potential for technological applications. In the current article we report on our study of the materials V 1 / 3 TaS 2 and V 1 / 3 NbS 2 , using a combination of x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, and single crystal neutron diffraction. Historically identified as ferromagnets, our diffraction results instead reveal that vanadium spins in these compounds are arranged into an A-type antiferromagnetic configuration at low temperatures. Refined moments are 1.37(6) and 1.50(9) μ B for V 1 / 3 TaS 2 and V 1 / 3 NbS 2 , respectively. Transition temperatures T c = 32 K for V 1 / 3 TaS 2 and 50 K for V 1 / 3 NbS 2 are obtained from the magnetization and neutron diffraction results. We attribute the small net magnetization observed in the low-temperature phases to a subtle ( ~ 2 ° ) canting of XY spins in the out-of-plane direction. These new results are indicative of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the vanadium moments in adjacent a b planes, likely eliminating the possibility of identifying stable chiral solitons in the current materials.

Magnetoelectric effect arising from a field-induced pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion in a rare-earth magnet

Magnetoelectric materials are attractive for several applications, including actuators, switches, and magnetic field sensors. Typical mechanisms for achieving a strong magnetoelectric coupling are rooted in transition metal magnetism. In sharp contrast, here we identify CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 as a magnetoelectric material without magnetic transition metal ions, thus ensuring that the Er ions play a key role in achieving this interesting property. Our detailed study includes measurements of the structural, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of this material. Bulk characterization and neutron powder diffraction show no evidence for structural phase transitions down to 0.3 K and therefore CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 maintains the room temperature P2/c space group over a wide temperature range without external magnetic field. These same measurements also identify collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Er 3+ moments below T N =0.87K. Complementary dielectric constant and pyroelectric current measurements reveal that a ferroelectric phase with a maximum polarization P~0.6 nC/cm 2 emerges when applying a modest external magnetic field, which indicates that this material has a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Finally, we argue that the magnetoelectric coupling in this system arises from a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion induced by the magnetic field.

Competing magnetic states in multiferroic BaYFeO 4 : A high magnetic field study

Spin-driven ferroelectricity phenomena have drawn great interest in the scientific community due to potential application in spintronics and their complex physical mechanisms. A noticeable example of this is multiferroic BaYFeO 4 that exhibits an unconventional magnetoelectric (ME) coupling due to the uncorrelated behavior of the ferroelectric and cycloidal states under an applied magnetic field. To shed more light on this spin-driven ME effect, a high-quality sample of BaYFeO 4 was synthesized by a standard solid-state reaction method, and its high-field (up to 9 T) magnetic properties have been systematically investigated by means of magnetometry, magnetocaloric effect, and Mössbauer measurements over a wide temperature range (5–400 K). In addition, its crystal and magnetic structures have been studied using x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Results obtained in this work indicate that Fe spins form a long-range spin density wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T_{\text{N1}}$ ~ 50K, which transforms into the cycloidal AFM order at $T_{\text{N2}}$ ~ 35K. A spin-glass-like state emerges below $T^\ast$ ~ 17K, and coexists with the long-range cycloidal AFM one in this temperature range. Magnetocaloric and Mössbauer measurements consistently confirm the robustness of both the long-range SDWand cycloidal AFM orders under applied magnetic fields up to 6 T, whereas the spin-glass state is converted into the ferromagnetic (FM) state when the applied magnetic field exceeds 1 T. These findings pinpoint the fact that the magnetic field evolution of spin correlations from the AFM to FM character in the spin-glass state is responsible for the magnetic field dependence of ferroelectricity in BaYFeO 4 .

Relationship between A-site cation and magnetic structure in 3d–5d–4f double perovskite iridates Ln 2 NiIrO 6 ( Ln = La, Pr, Nd)

We report a comprehensive investigation of Ln 2 NiIrO 6 (Ln=La, Pr, Nd) using thermodynamic and transport properties, neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the role of A-site cations on the magnetic interactions in this family of hybrid 3d–5d–4f compositions. Magnetic structure determination using neutron diffraction reveals antiferromagnetism for La 2 NiIrO 6 , a collinear ferrimagnetic Ni and Ir state that is driven to long-range antiferromagnetism upon the onset of Nd ordering in Nd 2 NiIrO 6 , and a noncollinear ferrimagnetic Ni and Ir sublattice interpenetrated by a ferromagnetic Pr lattice for Pr 2 NiIrO 6 . For Pr 2 NiIrO 6 , heat-capacity results reveal the presence of two independent magnetic sublattices, and transport resistivity indicates insulating behavior and a conduction pathway that is thermally mediated. Here, a first principles DFT calculation elucidates the existence of the two independent magnetic sublattices within Pr 2 NiIrO 6 and offers insight into the behavior in La 2 NiIrO 6 and Nd 2 NiIrO 6 . Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is consistent with spin-orbit coupling splitting the t 2 g manifold of octahedral Ir 4+ into a J eff = 1/2 and J eff = 3/2 state for all members of the series considered.

Helical versus collinear antiferromagnetic order tuned by magnetic anisotropy in polar and chiral (Ni,Mn) 3 TeO 6

In this work, polar and chiral Ni 3 TeO 6 was found to exhibit a colossal magnetoelectric (ME) effect associated with collinear antiferromagnetic order. We have investigated the evolution of its magnetic state with the substitution of the Ni 2+ spins by isotropic Mn 2+ spins, namely (Ni, Mn) 3 TeO 6 (NMTO). The ground state of NMTO maintains an Ising nature, but a new phase with XY-type magnetic anisotropy is discovered at an intermediate temperature range. Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that (1) Mn ions tend to occupy a specific transition-metal site, consistent with the first-principle calculation, and (2) the intermediate phase is an incommensurate (IC) helical magnetic state propagating along the $\textit{c}$ axis with $\vec q_{\text{IC}}$ = (0, 0, 1.5 ± δ). We also found that the balance between these two magnetic states can be readily manipulated with magnetic fields, which results in significant ME effects. This selective site occupancy of NMTO allows for a unique competition between collinear and helical magnetic structures with minimal chemical disorder. Thus, NMTO serves as a model system to study site-specific chemical control of noncollinear magnetism and ME coupling.

Temperature-induced valence-state transition in double perovskite Ba 2 - x Sr x TbIrO 6

In this paper, a temperature-induced valence-state transition is studied in a narrow composition range 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.375 of Ba 2 - x Sr x TbIrO 6 by means of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. The valence-state transition involves an electron transfer between Tb and Ir leading to the valence-state change between Tb 3 + / Ir 5 + and Tb 4 + / Ir 4 + phases. This first-order transition has a dramatic effect on the lattice, transport properties, and the long-range magnetic order at low temperatures for both Tb and Ir ions. Ir 5 + ion has an electronic configuration of 5 d 4 ( J eff = 0 ), which is expected to be nonmagnetic. In contrast, Ir 4 + ion with a configuration of 5 d 5 ( J eff = 1/2) favors a long-range magnetic order. For x = 0.1 with Tb 3 + / Ir 5 + configuration to the lowest temperature (2 K) investigated in this paper, a spin-glass behavior is observed around 5 K indicating Ir 5 + ( J eff = 0 ) ions act as a spacer reducing the magnetic interactions between Tb 3 + ions. For x = 0.5 with Tb 4 + / Ir 4 + configuration below the highest temperature 400 K of this paper, a long-range antiferromagnetic order at T N = 40 K is observed highlighting the importance of Ir 4 + ( J eff = 1/2) ions in promoting the long-range magnetic order of both Tb and Ir ions. For 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.375, a temperature-induced valence-state transition from high-temperature Tb 3 + / Ir 5 + phase to low-temperature Tb 4 + / Ir 4 + phase occurs in the temperature range 180 K ≤ T ≤ 325 K and the transition temperature increases with x . The compositional dependence demonstrates the ability to tune the the valence state for a critical region of x that leads to a concurrent change in magnetism and structure. Furthermore, this tuning ability could be employed with suitable strain in thin films to act as a switch as the magnetism is manipulated.

Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground states in the double perovskite iridates $\textit{A}_2\textit{B}$IrO$_6$ ($\textit{A}$ = Ba, Sr; $\textit{B}$ = Lu, Sc)

Iridates with the 5$d^4$ electronic configuration have attracted recent interest due to reports of magnetically ordered ground states despite longstanding expectations that their strong spin-orbit coupling would generate a $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground state for each Ir 5+ ion. The major focus of prior research has been on the double perovskite iridates Ba 2 YIrO 6 and Sr 2 YIrO 6 , where the nature of the ground states (i.e., ordered vs nonmagnetic) is still controversial. Here, in this work, we present neutron powder diffraction, high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), magnetic susceptibility, and muon spin relaxation data on the related double perovskite iridates Ba 2 LuIrO 6 , Sr 2 LuIrO 6 , Ba 2 ScIrO 6 , and Sr 2 ScIrO 6 that enable us to gain a general understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties for this family of materials. Our HERFD-XAS and RIXS measurements establish $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground states for the Ir 5+ ions in all cases, with similar values for Hund's coupling $J_H$ and the spin-orbit coupling constant $λ_{\text{SOC}}$. Our bulk susceptibility and muon spin relaxation data find no evidence for long-range magnetic order or spin freezing, but they do exhibit weak magnetic signals that are consistent with extrinsic local moments. Our results indicate that the large $λ_{\text{SOC}}$ is the key driving force behind the electronic and magnetic ground states realized in the $5d^4$ double perovskite iridates, which agrees well with conventional wisdom.

Relationship between magnetoresistance behavior and magnetic states in intercalated compounds Fe x TiS 2

Here, temperature and field-dependent neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements have been performed to reveal the nature of the unusual evolution of the magnetoresistance behavior with increasing Fe content in the intercalated compounds Fe x TiS 2 (with x=0.25,0.33,0.50,0.55) synthesized by solid-phase reaction method with prolonged homogenization heat treatment. As derived from neutron diffraction measurements, both the Fe 0.25 TiS 2 and the Fe 0.50 TiS 2 compound exhibit an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below their respective Néel temperatures T N ≈52 K and T N ≈140K, which results in the presence of a large magnetoresistance accompanying the field-induced phase transition from AFM to the ferromagnetic (FM) state. At low temperatures, this AFM-FM transition is irreversible, confirmed by the irreversibility of changes in the NPD patterns and the presence of remnant magnetoresistance. In contrast, Fe 0.33 TiS 2 shows short-range magnetic order at T f ≈44 K due to a triangular network of intercalated Fe atoms and frustrations of exchange interactions with a field-induced FM alignment of Fe magnetic moments in an applied magnetic field as revealed by NPD measurements. The field-induced transformations of the cluster glass magnetic state in this compound lead to a significant decrease in electrical resistivity. According to NPD data, a reduced impact of an external magnetic field on the electrical resistivity of the compound Fe 0.55 TiS 2 can be ascribed to the presence of ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic order in compounds with the Fe concentrations above x=0.50. The results obtained indicate that the distribution of the Fe atoms, along with their concentration in Fe x TiS 2 layered compounds, plays a decisive role in the formation of the magnetic state and the behavior of the magnetoresistance.

Crystal growth and magnetic structure of ternary silicide Eu Pd 3 Si 2

The hexagonal CaCu 5 –type structure (P6/mmm) is the prototype for more than 100 ternary borides, gallides, and silicides, with general stoichiometry of RTM 3 X 2 (R=lanthanide/alkaline earth; TM=transition metal; X=B, Ga, Si, Ge). Here we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and bulk magnetic properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of EuPd 3 Si 2 and its nonmagnetic analog SrPd 3 Si 2 . Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group symmetry Imma (no. 74, Z = 2, oI12) displaying pseudohexagonal symmetry. Ferromagnetic (FM) order of Eu 2+ at T C1 =78K and a spin-reorientation transition at T C2 =5K appear as distinctive features in bulk magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity/resistance measurements. Neutron powder diffraction measurements on EuPd 3 Si 2 confirm FM order of the Eu 2+ spins below T C1 , with the spins aligned along the a axis below T C2 . Electronic band structure calculations corroborate the crystal structure and the FM state for EuPd 3 Si 2 , with a Pd d–band polarization in the same direction as the Eu 4f polarization, enhancing the observed spin moment.

Magnetic order in the two-dimensional metal-organic framework manganese pyrazinecarboxylate with Mn-Mn dimers

The magnetic properties of [Mn(pyrazinecarboxylate) 2 ] n , empirical formula C 10 H 6 MnN 4 O 4 , are investigated through susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering measurements. The structure consists of Mn-Mn dimers linked on a distorted 2D hexagonal structure. The weak out-of-plane interactions create a quasi-2D magnetic material within the larger three-dimensional metal-organic framework structure. Here, we show that this material undergoes a two-stage magnetic transition, related to the low dimensionality of the Mn lattice. First, at 5 K, which is assigned to the initial development of short-range order in the 2D layers. This is followed by long-range order at 3.3 K. Applied field measurements reveal the potential to induce magnetic transitions in moderately small fields of ~2 T. Neutron powder diffraction enabled the determination of a unique magnetic space group P2 1 '/c (No. 14.77) at 1.5 K. This magnetic structure consists of antiferromagnetically coupled Mn-Mn dimers with spins principally along the out-of-plane $a$ axis.

Exploring the impact of Cr-doping on the crystallographic and magnetic structure of Mn 5 Si 3 antiferromagnetic alloy

Here, the role of Cr-doping on the structural and magnetic ground states of Mn 5 Si 3 alloy has been investigated through temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) techniques. All the Cr-doped alloys of nominal composition Mn 5-x Cr x Si 3 (for x = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2) undergo two first-order magneto-structural phase transitions from hexagonal (space group: P6 3 /mcm) paramagnetic → orthorhombic (space group: Ccmm) collinear antiferromagnetic → orthorhombic (space group: Cc2m) non-collinear antiferromagnetic phase on cooling from room temperature. NPD studies at different constant temperatures indicate that both anti ferromagnetic phases are commensurate in nature and can be represented by q = (0,1,0) magnetic propagation vector for all the Cr-doped alloys. Such doping at the Mn-site results in a significant modification of the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure (both moment size and orientation) and hence affects the unusual magnetic properties, like inverted hysteresis loop, thermomagnetic irreversibility, etc. The XAFS measurements were performed to interpret the local environment of doped Cr atoms in detail, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of the unusual properties of this class of Cr-doped Mn 5 Si 3 alloys. The analysis confirms the elemental state of Cr in the doped alloys and indicates a high degree of preservation of local crystallographic structure with varying Cr concentration and sample temperature. Doping induces intriguing changes in XAFS patterns, elucidated through different types of scattering mechanisms associated with the central absorbing Cr atom.

Cleavable quaternary oxychlorides with high magnetic ordering temperatures

Quaternary oxychlorides derived from Ruddlesden–Popper 3d transition metal oxides offer a route to cleavable crystals with bulk antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures reaching at least 550 K. Here, we study the magnetic, optical, and mechanical behavior of Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl, Ca 2 FeO 3 Cl, Ca 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 , and Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 . Through optical absorption measurements, we show that these antiferromagnetic semiconductors have optical band gaps of ≈2.1(1) eV. The magnetic ordering symmetries and temperatures were probed by neutron powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy on polycrystalline samples, demonstrating Néel temperatures (T N ) near room temperature in the single layer Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl (T N ≈ 311 K) and Ca 2 FeO 3 Cl (T N ≈ 360 K), and the double-layer compound Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 has T N ≈ 545 K. The high-spin moments of Fe 3+ lie within the basal plane and the magnetic structures are compensated within each magnetic layer and characterized by magnetic propagation vectors k = ($\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{2}$ 0). Magnetization results demonstrate the quasi-2D nature of the magnetism, with a broad maximum in the susceptibility near 2T N for Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl. Scotch tape tests and mechanical exfoliation onto SiO 2 confirm the micaceous nature of these crystals with cleavage down to a single unit cell (two magnetic layers) achieved for Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 . In conclusion, this paper highlights strong antiferromagnetic interactions, semiconducting band gaps, and cleavability of quaternary Fe-based oxychlorides and motivates future work on crystals and exfoliated flakes of these and related oxyhalide systems.

Lorentz factor for time-of-flight neutron Bragg and total scattering

We report the three fundamental origins of the Lorentz factor for neutron time-of-flight powder diffraction are revisited. A detailed derivation of the Lorentz factor is presented in the context of diffuse scattering modelling in reciprocal space when perfect periodicity is assumed, and the total scattering pattern is constructed in its discrete form – the factor in this case becomes 1/Q 2 (or d 2 ). Discussion is also presented with respect to practical data reduction where a vanadium measurement is usually taken as the normalization factor (to account for various factors such as detector efficiency), and it is shown that the existence of the Lorentz factor is independent of such a normalization process.

Structural, vibrational, thermal, and magnetic properties of mullite-type NdMnTiO 5 ceramic

Mullite-type $R$Mn 2 O 5 ($R$ = Y, rare-earth element) ceramics are of ongoing research attention because of their interesting crystal-chemical and magnetic properties. We report nuclear and magnetic structures of NdMnTiO 5 together with its spectroscopic, thermogravimetric, and magnetic properties. The polycrystalline sample is prepared by solid-state synthesis and characterized from neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data Rietveld refinements. NdMnTiO 5 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group $Pbam$ with metric parameter $a$ = 755.20(1) pm, $b$ = 869.91(1) pm, $c$ = 582.42(1) pm, and $V$ = 382.62(1) 10 6 pm 3 . The Mn 3+ and Ti 4+ cations are observed to be located in the octahedral and pyramidal sites, respectively. The vibrational features in these polyhedral sites are characterized by Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. The higher decomposition temperature of NdMnTiO 5 , compared to other $R$Mn 2 O 5 phases, is explained in terms of the higher bond strength of Ti-O bonds than those of Mn-O bonds. Temperature-dependent DC magnetic susceptibility suggests a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition at 43(1) K. Inverse susceptibility in the paramagnetic region above 120 K follows the Curie-Weiss law, resulting in a magnetic moment of 6.33(1) μ B per formula unit. Neutron diffraction data collected at 7.5 K reveal that the magnetic moments of Nd 3+ and Mn 3+ in NdMnTiO 5 are incommensurately ordered with a propagation vector $k$ = (0, 0.238, 0.117).

Design of higher valency in covalent organic frameworks

The valency (connectivity) of building units in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has been primarily 3 and 4, corresponding to triangles and squares or tetrahedrons, respectively. We report a strategy for making COFs with valency 8 (cubes) and “infinity” (rods). The linker 1,4-boronophenylphosphonic acid—designed to have boron and phosphorus as an isoelectronic combination of carbon-group elements—was condensed into a porous, polycubane structure (BP-COF- 1 ) formulated as (–B 4 P 4 O 12 –)(–C 6 H 4 –) 4 . It was characterized by x-ray powder diffraction techniques, which revealed cubes linked with phenyls. The isoreticular forms (BP-COF- 2 to 5 ) were similarly prepared and characterized. Large single crystals of a constitutionally isomeric COF (BP-COF- 6 ), composed of rod units, were also synthesized using the same strategy, thus propelling COF chemistry into a new valency regime.
