Post senescent grass canopy remote sensing

Analysis of in situ collected spectral reflectance data from a dormant or senescent grass canopy showed a direct relationship existed between spectral reflectance and biomass for the 0.50-0.80 micron spectral region. The data, collected four weeks after the end of the growing season, indicated that post senescent remote sensing of grass canopy biomass is possible and helps to elucidate the spectral contribution of recently dead vegetation in mixed live/dead canopy situations.

Post Landsat-D advanced concept evaluation /PLACE/

The aim of the Post Landsat-D Advanced Concept Evaluation (PLACE) program was to identify the key technology requirements of earth resources satellite systems for the 1985-2000 period. The program involved four efforts: (1) examination of future needs in the earth resources area, (2) creation of a space systems technology model capable of satisfying these needs, (3) identification of key technology requirements posed by this model, and (4) development of a methodology (PRISM) to assist in the priority structuring of the resulting technologies.

Study of the post-flare loops on 29 July 1973. I - Dynamics of the X-ray loops

We derive an empirical model of the X-ray emitting post-flare loops observed during the decay phase of the 29 July 1973 flare. We find that the loops are elliptical, with the brightest emitting region at the tops. We determine the height, velocity of growth, and ratio of height to width of the loops at times from 3 to 12 hr after the flare onset.

Study of the post-flare loops on 29 July 1973. II - Physical parameters in the X-ray loops

We use the filter ratio method of analysis to determine spatially resolved values of plasma parameters in the X-ray emitting post-flare loop system which developed on 29 and 30 July 1973. We find that the loops were hotter and had higher plasma pressure at their tops than near their footpoints. The loop tops were at nearly the same temperature at different places 3 hr after the flare maximum and were also at nearly this same temperature 3 and 8 hr later. Variations in brightness transverse to the loops were due to variations in emission measure. We show by consideration of radiative losses alone that energy must have been added to the hottest part of the flare, at the tops of the loops, late in the decay phase of the flare.

Ar-40/Ar-39 age of the Shergotty achondrite and implications for its post-shock thermal history

Ar-40/Ar-39 measurements are used to determine the age of the Shergotty achondrite and the chronology of the shock event responsible for the complete conversion of its plagioclase to maskelynite is discussed. Apparent ages are found to vary between 240 and 640 million years for the whole rock sample, with a plateau age of 254 million years for a maskelynite separate. The Rb-Sr age of 165 million years determined by Nyquist at al (1978) suggests that the maskelynite as well as the whole rock was incompletely degassed. Argon diffusion characteristics indicate a post-shock cooling time greater than 1000 years and a burial depth greater than 300 m for a thermal model of a cooling ejecta blanket of variable thickness. It is concluded that the shock event which degassed the argon and reset the Rb-Sr systematics occurred between 165 and 250 million years ago when the parent body experienced a collision in the asteroid belt.

Post-development image intensification by autoradiography

A method of post-development intensification of photographic images using a newly developed autoradiographic procedure is described. Radioactive Thiourea-S35 is combined with silver in the developed emulsion, which is then contact printed with a receiver emulsion. The beta decay from S35 produces an enhanced autoradiographic image. The laboratory technique is described and results of astronomical applications are presented.

The effects of leading edge modifications on the post-stall characteristics of wings

An investigation of the effects of leading edge modifications on the post-stall characteristics of two rectangular planform wings in a series of low speed wind tunnel tests is presented. Abrupt discontinuities in the leading edge shape of the wings were produced by placing a nose glove over a portion of the span or by deflecting sections of a segmented leading edge flap. Six component balance data, oil flow visualization photographs, and pressure distribution measurements were obtained, and tests made to study the development of flow separation at stall on small scale planform wing models. Results of oil flow visualization tests at and beyond stall showed the formation of counter-rotating swirl patterns on the upper surface of the '2-D' and '3-D' wings, and results of a numerical lifting line technique applied to wings with leading edge modifications are included.

Unification of some biochemical methods of research in the pre- and post-flight periods

The biochemical methods for determination of various parameters and factors during pre- and post-flight periods, as used by American and Soviet teams dealing with space flight medicine are compared. The emphasis is on the exchange of information on the study of the blood and urine content of space travelers before and after space flight. A series of electrolytic, enzymatic, and hormonal factors is discussed.

Lidar measurements of the post-fuego stratospheric aerosol

Fifteen lidar observations of the stratospheric aerosol were made between February and November 1975. All observations revealed the greatly increased particulate backscattering that followed the eruption of the volcano Fuego in October 1974. Vertical structure consisted initially of multiple layers, which later merged to form a single, broader peak. Essentially all of the increased scattering was confined to altitudes below 20 km. Hence, aerosol layer centroids in 1975 were typically several km below their altitude prior to the eruption. Radiative and thermal consequences of the measured post-Fuego layer were computed using several recently published models. The models predict a temperature increase of several K at the altitude of the layer, caused by the infrared absorption bands of the sulfuric acid particles. The surface temperature decrease predicted by the models is considerably smaller than 1 K, partly because of the small optical thickness of the volcanic layer, and partly because of its short residence time relative to the earth-ocean thermal response time.

A mathematical model of post-instability in continuum mechanics

The post-instability can appear in the form of failure of hyperbolicity or in the form of cascade instability (stretching of vorticity in an inviscid fluid or instability of the Navier-Stokes equations). All the cases are characterized by an unlimited decrease of the scale of the motions, in the course of which the derivatives of the corresponding functions tend to infinity, though the functions themselves remain finite. Such an instability shows that the corresponding state of a continuum cannot be properly simulated by smooth functions. Hence, the original model must be corrected by giving up the requirement about differentiability and enlarging the class of functions. Applications to a model of an inviscid fluid and to a model of turbulence are discussed.

The effects of cognitive and behavioral control on post-stress performance

A study was designed to investigate the effects of behavioral and cognitive control on post-stress performance. Half of the subjects exposed to loud unpredictable noise bursts were given 'behavioral' control (a button which would terminate the noise), while the other half had no behavioral control. In addition, subjects were provided with one of three levels of feedback (success, failure, or no feedback) regarding their performance during the noise. It was expected that information about performance would provide subjects with an increased sense of 'cognitive' control which would affect their appraisal of stressful events and their later performance. The results indicated that subjects given feedback performed better on subsequent tasks than those given no feedback. Perceived behavioral control had little effect on performance. The causal attributions made by subjects were used to interpret these effects. These findings were viewed as supportive of Averill's (1973) notion that various types of control are related to stress in a complex fashion. The data may also support the reformulation by Abramson et al. (1978) of learned helplessness theory.

Observations of a post-flare radio burst in X-rays

More than six hours after the two-ribbon flare of May 21, 1980, the hard X-ray spectrometer aboard the SMM imaged an extensive arch above the flare region which was found to be the lowest part of a stationary post-flare noise storm recorded at the same time at Culgoora. The bent crystal spectrometer aboard the SMM confirms that the arch emission was basically thermal. Variations in brightness and energy spectrum at one of the supposed footpoints of the arch are seen as correlation in time with radio brightness, suggesting that suprathermal particles from the radio noise regions dumped in variable quantities onto the low corona and transition layer.

Post heat treatment effects on double layer metal structures for VLSI applications

The realization of high yield double layer metal systems using wet chemistry processes and the ability to extend yields beyond that attainable with wet chemistry by means of post sintering processes at temperatures below 500 C for potential applications in very large scale integration structures were studied. Yields in excess of 98% and average total contact resistance of less than 150 ohms and 200 ohms were realized for a series of 560 vias of 0.5 X 0.5 mils and 0.2 X 0.2 mils in size, respectively.

Observations of suspected low-mass post-T Tauri stars and their evolutionary status

The results of a study of five X-ray discovered weak emission pre-main-sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga star formation complex are presented. All are of spectral type K7-M0, and about 1-2 mag above the main sequence. One is a double-lined spectroscopic binary, the first spectroscopic binary PMS star to be confirmed. The ages, masses, and radii of these stars as determined by photometry and spectroscopy are discussed. The difference in emission strength between these and the T Tauri stars is investigated, and it is concluded that these 'post-T Tauri' stars do indeed appear more evolved than the T Tauri stars, although there is no evidence of any significant difference in ages.

Development of dynamic simulation of TF34-GE-100 turbofan engine with post-stall capability

This paper describes the development of a hybrid computer simulation of a TF34-GE-100 turbofan engine with post-stall capability. The simulation operates in real-time and will be used to test and evaluate stall recovery control modes for this engine. The simulation calculations are performed by an analog computer with a peripheral multivariable function generation unit used for computing bivariate functions. Tabular listings of a simulation variables are obtained by interfacing to a digital computer and using a custom software package for data collection and display.
