Templated Vapor-Liquid-Solid Epitaxy of III-V Semiconductors on Silicon

Epitaxial growth on silicon remains the most promising method to reduce the cost of optoelectronic-quality III-V semiconductors. Several approaches exist to epitaxially grow III-V material from the vapor phase, but control of 3-D structures remains difficult with these methods. In this work, we present a novel epitaxial growth technique in which photolithography and wet etching are used to establish the geometry of group-III metal, which is then converted to III-V semiconductor by annealing with exposure group-V precursor. The resulting material has been shown to align to the substrate lattice and is optically active, making it a promising approach for III-V PV technologies.

Terahertz lightwave control of non-equilibrium phases and collective modes in multi-band superconductors

A gauge-invariant density matrix approach is presented to describe the non-equilibrium dynamics of multiband superconductors after photo-excitation. The derived gauge-invariant Bloch equations extend the Anderson pseudo-spin precession model by fully incorporating the center-of-mass motion of Cooper pairs. We also describe lightwave propagation effects inside a superconducting film by including the self-consistent interaction of the photo-excited superconducting system with the propagating electromagnetic field inside the superconductor using Maxwell's equations.

Reports From The Frontier: Overcoming Limitations for Pure-water Anion-exchange-membrane Electrolysis

Anion-exchange-membrane electrolysis is positioned to play a key role in the predicted exponential growth of green hydrogen technology with essential R&D advances. We reveal key design parameters essential to commercialization. First, stable alkaline oxygen-evolution reaction catalysts with high electronic conductivity and minimal surface reconstruction during operation must be designed. Alkaline catalyst layers must also be applied to the membrane electrode assembly with scalable, industrially relevant techniques. Second, ionomer oxidation mitigation strategies must be developed. Furthermore, this approach could also target other creative catalyst layer design, such as phase-separation control to protect oxidation-prone organic components or catalyst engineering to direct selectivity for hydroxide over polymer oxidation. If competitive efficiency and durability can be achieved in pure water, AEM electrolysis has the potential to become a dominant electrolyzer technology.

Functionalized Cellular Magmatics

We are pioneering the development of fundamental and applied research related to engineered cellular magmatics (ECM) technology. Over the course of our first year, we developed the methodology and measured the effects of various additives on ECM properties. We demonstrated the ability to control the phase and morphology of post-process secondary minerals on ECMs based on starting conditions and compositions. Both achievements are critical to advancing the use of ECMs for applications such as water filtration and runoff remediation. We established the ability to grow various microbiologic consortia on ECM surfaces as well as a process that allows industrial scaling of the technology for rapid field deployment in applications such as the cleanup of fossil fuel contamination. Furthermore, this biotechnology also has potential application in the nascent fields of biomining of precious metals and bioremediation of toxic heavy metals.

On the Life Expectancy Ot High-power CW Magnetrons for Superconducting Accelrators

Modern CW or pulse Superconducting RF (SRF) accelerators require efficient RF sources controllable in phase and power with a reduced cost. Therefore, utilization of the high-power CW magnetrons as RF sources in SRF accelerator projects was proposed in a number of works, e.g., [1, 2]. But typically, the CW magnetrons are designed as RF sources for industrial heating, and the lifetime of the tubes is not the first priority as it is required for high-energy accelerators. The high-power industrial CW magnetrons use the cathodes made of pure tungsten. The emission properties of the tungsten cathodes are not deteriorated much by electron and ion bombardments, but the latter causes sputtering of the cathode in the magnetron crossed fields. The sputtered cathode material covers the magnetron interior. This leads to sparks and discharges that limit the life of the magnetrons. We considered an analysis of magnetron failure modes vs. output power [3]. We developed a model of ionization of the residual gas in the magnetrons interaction space and simulated the spattering of the cathode in 100 kW CW magnetrons to estimate the life expectancy. Basing on results we proposed ways to increase the CW magnetrons longevity for SRF accelerators.

Chiral, Topological, and Knotted Colloids in Liquid Crystals

The geometric shape, symmetry, and topology of colloidal particles often allow for controlling colloidal phase behavior and physical properties of these soft matter systems. In liquid crystalline dispersions, colloidal particles with low symmetry and nontrivial topology of surface confinement are of particular interest, including surfaces shaped as handlebodies, spirals, knots, multi-component links, and so on. These types of colloidal surfaces induce topologically nontrivial three-dimensional director field configurations and topological defects. Director switching by electric fields, laser tweezing of defects, and local photo-thermal melting of the liquid crystal host medium promote transformations among many stable and metastable particle-induced director configurations that can be revealed by means of direct label-free three-dimensional nonlinear optical imaging. The interplay between topologies of colloidal surfaces, director fields, and defects is found to show a number of unexpected features, such as knotting and linking of line defects, often uniquely arising from the nonpolar nature of the nematic director field. This review article highlights fascinating examples of new physical behavior arising from the interplay of nematic molecular order and both chiral symmetry and topology of colloidal inclusions within the nematic host. Furthermore, the article concludes with a brief discussion of how these findings may lay the groundwork for new types of topology-dictated self-assembly in soft condensed matter leading to novel mesostructured composite materials, as well as for experimental insights into the pure-math aspects of low-dimensional topology.

WEST actively cooled load resilient ion cyclotron resonance heating system results

Three identical new WEST ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) antennas have been designed, assembled then commissioned on plasma from 2013 to 2019. The WEST ICRH system is both load-resilient and compatible with long-pulse operations. The three antennas have been successfully operated together on plasma in 2019 and 2020, with up to 5.8 MW of coupled power. The load resilience capability has been demonstrated and the antenna feedback controls for phase and matching have been developed. The breakdown detection systems have been validated and successfully protected the antennas. The use of ICRH in combination with lower hybrid has triggered the first high confinement mode transitions identified on WEST.

Compact folded metasurface spectrometer

Compact optical devices such as spectrometers are realized with metasurfaces within a dielectric medium confined by reflective surfaces. The metasurfaces control the phase profiles of the reflected electromagnetic waves within the device. In a compact spectrometer, the metasurfaces within the device separate the electromagnetic waves in different wavelengths. The metasurfaces are designed according to their phase profile by varying the size of the array of scatterers.

Higher-order dispersion compensating pulse shaper via amplitude spectral filtering and nonlinear phase accumulation

A method of pulse shaping using spectral filtering, positive chirp, and self-phase modulation to control the accumulated higher-order phase terms of the spectral phase. This pulse shaping method has particular advantage in fiber chirped pulse amplification (FCPA) systems, where there are two effects: (1) an offsetting of the fourth order phase via nonlinear phase accumulation, allowing for a higher Strehl ratio (i.e., a cleaner pulse), higher peak power pulse and (2) enabling power scaling to higher pulse energies without the increased nonlinear phase accumulation leading to pulse breakup. This technique can be used both in a passive system with no amplification to clean up an existing pulse, and in an amplifier system to enable higher performance operation (shorter pulses, cleaner pulses, higher energy pulses).

Metasurface-assisted 3D beam shaping using array of scatterers

Cascaded metasurfaces can control the phase, amplitude and polarization of an electromagnetic beam, shaping it in three dimensional configuration not achievable with other methods. Each cascaded metasurface has dielectric or metallic scatterers arranged in a period array. The shape of the scatterers determines the three dimensional configuration of the output beam and is determined with iterative calculations through computational simulations.

Revisiting metastable immiscibility in SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 : Structure and phase separation of supercooled liquids and glasses

Understanding and controlling liquid–liquid phase separation in aluminosilicates is crucial for optimizing glass properties. However, the metastable nature of aluminosilicates’ phase separation has made it difficult to study experimentally, and uncertainty persists regarding the compositional and temperature extents of the miscibility gap. Here, we present new experimental evidence that suggests a consolute temperature between 1440 and 1590°C and endmember compositions of 7 and 62 mol.% Al 2 O 3 for the phase-separated glasses. Using containerless melt processing, deeply supercooled liquids over the 0–60 mol.% Al 2 O 3 range are probed with in situ small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, which simultaneously reveals changes in nanoscale density heterogeneity and atomic structure. Correlations between phase separation and atomic coordination environments are compared for liquids and glasses. Pair distribution function analysis shows mean O–(Si + Al) coordination increases with Al 2 O 3 content and decreases with temperature.

Phase Trombone Design in the Beam Transfer line for the Project PIP-II at Fermilab

PIP-II beam transfer line (BTL) to transport the beam from PIP-II Linac to the Booster ring at Fermilab. One crucial aspect of the BTL design involved the implementation of collimators. These collimators play a vital role in removing large amplitude particles from the beamline that might otherwise miss the horizontal and vertical edge of the foil at the point of the Booster injection. To ensure the effectiveness of these collimators, simulation was conducted to determine their optical placement within the BTL. The simulation revealed that the precise control of accumulated phase advances between the collimators and the foil was crucial. To achieve this control, a phase trombone is needed within the BTL. The phase trombone serves as an adjustment mechanism, allowing for the fine-tuning of the phase advance between the collimators and the foil, thus optimizing the performance of the collimation process. This paper discusses and presents the details of the design and implementation of the phase trombone within the PIP-II BTL.

Robust Quantum Control via Multipath Interference for Thousandfold Phase Amplification in a Resonant Atom Interferometer

We introduce a novel technique for enhancing the robustness of light-pulse atom interferometers against the pulse infidelities that typically limit their sensitivities. The technique uses quantum optimal control to favorably harness the multipath interference of the stray trajectories produced by imperfect atom-optics operations. We apply this method to a resonant atom interferometer and achieve thousandfold phase amplification, representing a 50-fold improvement over the performance observed without optimized control. Moreover, we find that spurious interference can arise from the interplay of spontaneous emission and many-pulse sequences and demonstrate optimization strategies to mitigate this effect. Given the ubiquity of spontaneous emission in quantum systems, these results may be valuable for improving the performance of a diverse array of quantum sensors. We anticipate our findings will significantly benefit the performance of matter-wave interferometers for a variety of applications, including dark matter, dark energy, and gravitational wave detection.
