This material is based upon work supported by the Department of Energy under Award Number DEFE0031933. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has retained the services of ASME Standards Technology LLC (ASME ST-LLC) to develop a standardized test method and calculation protocol for determining and reporting annual/long-term heat rate for coal-fueled plants electricity generating units. ASME ST-LLC has retained the services of McHale & Associates, Inc. and Licata Energy & Environmental Consultants, Inc. to provide the technical input to this study. This code applies to hydrocarbon fueled Rankine cycle power generating facilities of any size. It is intended to be used for the determination of continuous power output and heat rate of a generating facility in its operating load cycle and in its operational lineup during the reporting period.

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL’s) compliance with Radionuclide NESHAP0F 1 regulations is managed by the Radioactive Air Emissions Management (RAEM) team, part of LANL’s Compliance Programs group (EPC-CP). One area of the Radionuclide NESHAP addresses requirements for siting a stack sample system. Prior to commissioning a new stack sampling system, the ANSI Standard for stack sampling requires that the stack sample location must meet several criteria, including uniform mixing of tracer gas (sulfur hexafluoride, SF 6 ) and tracer aerosol (liquid oil droplets) in the air stream. This memorandum will specifically focus on the tracer gas portion of the ANSI Standard. For these mix tests, tracer gas is injected into the stack air stream and the resulting air concentrations are measured across the plane of the stack at the proposed sampling location. The coefficient of variation of the media concentration must be under 20% when evaluated over the central 2/3 area of the stack or duct.

The US Department of Energy Office of Electricity has partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to find alternative precision timing solutions for the nation’s power grid. This effort is in response to the vulnerabilities identified in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), of which the US Global Positioning System (GPS) platform is a part. Additionally, Executive Order 139055 has highlighted the need for alternative or backup timing solutions. ORNL has established a Timing Lab and has been testing various technologies and timing devices as part of this effort. Precision Time Protocol (PTP), and the off-the-shelf timing devices and network connections that support it, are among the alternatives being tested. This work reports the accuracy of PTP over an Optical Transport Network (OTN) and is part of a series published by the Center for Alternative Synchronization and Timing (CAST).
