A Non-Invasive Approach for Elucidating the Spatial Distribution of In Situ Stress in Deep Subsurface Geologic Formations Considered for CO 2 Storage (Task 2 Report Extracting Stress Data from Seismic Data)

This report describes research accomplishments achieved with funding provided through Department of Energy (DOE) Contract DE-FE0031686. The purpose of this DOE funding is to develop methods that can provide key information about stress fields that act on deep rocks without invading the earth to acquire that information. The research objective was to demonstrate methods that extract the azimuth directions of SHmax and SHmin stress in deep rocks from traditional seismic reflection data like the data that are used to explore for deep oil and gas reservoirs. Battelle performed two seismic investigations and achieved estimates of SHmax and SHmin azimuths in both efforts that agreed with local, non-seismic, ground-truth measurements of SHmax orientation. The first procedure utilized vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data; the second effort utilized three-dimensional (3D) seismic data.

Equation-of-state Dependence of Gravitational Waves in Core-collapse Supernovae

Gravitational waves (GWs) provide unobscured insight into the birthplace of neutron stars and black holes in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). The nuclear equation of state (EOS) describing these dense environments is yet uncertain, and variations in its prescription affect the proto-neutron star (PNS) and the post-bounce dynamics in CCSN simulations, subsequently impacting the GW emission. In this study, we perform axisymmetric simulations of CCSNe with Skyrme-type EOSs to study how the GW signal and PNS convection zone are impacted by two experimentally accessible EOS parameters, (1) the effective mass of nucleons, m*, which is crucial in setting the thermal dependence of the EOS, and (2) the isoscalar incompressibility modulus, K sat . While K sat shows little impact, the peak frequency of the GWs has a strong effective mass dependence due to faster contraction of the PNS for higher values of m* owing to a decreased thermal pressure. These more compact PNSs also exhibit more neutrino heating, which drives earlier explosions and correlates with the GW amplitude via accretion plumes striking the PNS, exciting the oscillations. We investigate the spatial origin of the GWs and show the agreement between a frequency-radial distribution of the GW emission and a perturbation analysis. We do not rule out overshoot from below via PNS convection as another moderately strong excitation mechanism in our simulations. We also study the combined effect of effective mass and rotation. In all our simulations we find evidence for a power gap near ~1250 Hz; we investigate its origin and report its EOS dependence.

Synergy between Ni and Fe in NiFe aerogel oxygen evolution reaction catalyst: in situ 57 Fe Mössbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies

Anion-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE) for hydrogen production have attracted interest because cost-effective Ni- and Fe-based catalysts can be used for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although NiFe oxide/hydroxide-based catalysts have been extensively studied, the role of Fe and its chemical state during OER are not well understood, with inconsistent findings across different studies. In this work, we combined in situ 57 Fe Mössbauer (MS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to investigate the chemical states of Fe and Ni and elucidate their synergy during the OER. A NiFe (8 : 1 molar ratio) aerogel catalyst with high surface area, nano crystallinity, and high performance in AEMWE was used. We show that both Fe and Ni are oxidized during anodic polarization, and the potential for the change of oxidation states correlates well with the onset of the OER. In situ MS shows that 80–90% of Fe 3+ becomes tetravalent at OER potentials and remains so even after the potential is lowered below OER onset. Analysis of in situ XAS results suggests full Fe incorporation into Ni hydroxide. At OER potentials, lattice contraction indicates high oxidation states for both Ni and Fe. Upon returning to lower potentials, a portion of the Fe remains in its more oxidized form which corroborates the in situ MS findings. Results from this work affirm the importance of high-valent Ni and Fe in promoting the OER. Ni and Fe exhibit synergy during OER and the aerogel's unique nanomorphology leads to high OER activity.

Efficient evaluation of the Breit operator in the Pauli spinor basis

The frequency-independent Coulomb–Breit operator gives rise to the most accurate treatment of two-electron interaction in the non-quantum-electrodynamics regime. The Breit interaction in the Coulomb gauge consists of magnetic and gauge contributions. The high computational cost of the gauge term limits the application of the Breit interaction in relativistic molecular calculations. In this work, we apply the Pauli component integral–density matrix contraction scheme for gauge interaction with a maximum spin- and component separation scheme. We also present two different computational algorithms for evaluating gauge integrals. One is the generalized Obara–Saika algorithm, where the Laplace transformation is used to transform the gauge operator into Gaussian functions and the Obara–Saika recursion is used for reducing the angular momentum. The other algorithm is the second derivative of Coulomb interaction evaluated with Rys-quadrature. This work improves the efficiency of performing Dirac–Hartree–Fock with the variational treatment of Breit interaction for molecular systems. In conclusion, we use this formalism to examine relativistic trends in the Periodic Table and analyze the relativistic two-electron interaction contributions in heavy-element complexes.

Exploring the Adoption Challenges of Post-Quantum Cryptography in EV Charging Infrastructure

The rapid evolution of electric vehicle (EV) technology and the corresponding growth of the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) brings to light significant cybersecurity concerns, notably in the context of emerging post-quantum computing capabilities. This report, prepared by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) under the U.S. Department of Energy contract, delves into the challenges associated with integrating Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) into EVCI to safeguard against potential quantum computing threats. Post-quantum computers will eventually be able to invalidate technologies secured through public key cryptography. As part of this effort, the primary gaps and challenges in the EVCI were investigated with a focus on comparing traditional algorithms against PQC algorithms. One of the notable findings was that the P-521 algorithm was frequently surpassed in performance by PQC algorithms. This document provides a thorough examination of the hurdles the industry can expect when transitioning to PQC within the EVCI, such as interoperability concerns, the computational and memory demands of PQC algorithms, and the organizational readiness for such a transition. It emphasizes the necessity of a forward-thinking approach to cybersecurity, advocating for early and strategic engagement among EVCI stakeholders to ensure a seamless and cost-effective migration to quantum-resistant cryptographic standards. Through this report, the authors aim to catalyze awareness and action among policymakers, industry leaders, and cybersecurity professionals towards fortifying the EVCI against emerging quantum threats, thereby securing the infrastructure essential for the future of electric mobility.

3-center and 4-center 2-particle Gaussian AO integrals on modern accelerated processors

We report an implementation of the McMurchie–Davidson (MD) algorithm for 3-center and 4-center 2-particle integrals over Gaussian atomic orbitals (AOs) with low and high angular momenta l and varying degrees of contraction for graphical processing units (GPUs). This work builds upon our recent implementation of a matrix form of the MD algorithm that is efficient for GPU evaluation of 4-center 2-particle integrals over Gaussian AOs of high angular momenta (l ≥ 4) [A. Asadchev and E. F. Valeev, J. Phys. Chem. A 127, 10889–10895 (2023)]. The use of unconventional data layouts and three variants of the MD algorithm allow for the evaluation of integrals with double precision and sustained performance between 25% and 70% of the theoretical hardware peak. Performance assessment includes integrals over AOs with l ≤ 6 (a higher l is supported). Preliminary implementation of the Hartree–Fock exchange operator is presented and assessed for computations with up to a quadruple-zeta basis and more than 20 000 AOs. The corresponding C++ code is part of the experimental open-source LibintX library available at https://github.com/ValeevGroup/libintx.

Durability testing of actual Hanford waste glasses and their non-radioactive simulant glasses

The low-activity waste (LAW) fraction of Hanford tank waste will be converted to glass at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) and disposed on the Hanford site. The chemical durability of LAW glasses has been researched for decades to satisfy contract requirements. Most LAW glass durability data has been generated on non-radioactive simulant glasses fabricated via crucible melts. These non-radioactive glasses were chosen due to safety and cost reasons with confidence that radioactive waste glasses would exhibit similar behavior. To reduce the risk of significant differences in laboratory test response data between WTP melter waste glass and simulant glass, Product Consistency Tests (PCT, i.e., ASTM C1285-21) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 1313 durability tests were performed on actual and simulant LAW glasses fabricated using laboratory-scaled melters. Actual and simulant glass durability test results are presented and statistically compared. Finally, differences in test responses were found to be within experimental uncertainty.

Toward a Realistic Representation of Sucrose Transport in the Phloem of Plants

The significance of phloem hydrodynamics to plant mortality and survival, which impacts ecosystem-scale carbon and water cycling, is not in dispute. The phloem provides the conduits for products of photosynthesis to be transported to different parts of the plant for consumption or storage. The M$\ddot{u}$nch pressure flow hypothesis (PFH) is the leading framework to mathematically represent this transport. It assumes that osmosis provides the necessary pressure differences to drive water and sucrose within the phloem. Mathematical models utilizing the PFH approximate the phloem by a relatively rigid slender semi-permeable tube. However, the phloem consists of living cells that contract and expand in response to pressure fluctuations. The effect of membrane elasticity on osmotically driven sucrose front speed has rarely been considered and frames the scope here. Laboratory experiments were conducted to elucidate the elastic-to-plastic pressure-deformation relation in membranes and their effect on sucrose front speeds. It is demonstrated that membrane elasticity acts to retard the sucrose front speed. The retardation emerges because of two effects: (a) part of the osmotic pressure is diverted to perform mechanical work to expand the membrane instead of pressurizing water, and (b) expansion of the membrane reduces the sucrose concentration driving osmotic potential due to volume increases and concomitant dilution effects. Finally, these results offer a novel perspective about the much discussed presence of sieve plates throughout the phloem acting as structural expansion dampers.
