Tangible Solutions for Grid Operation Upgrade

Many countries worldwide are setting clean energy targets to decarbonize the energy sector and add higher wind and solar capacities. Given their distributed nature, variable renewable energy (VRE) assets can have unique grid integration considerations, and require grid operation practices to be modernized. When transitioning to higher renewable energy levels, many system operators configure a dedicated renewable energy desk to manage renewable energy resource operation in the system control center. Further, system operation planning is conducted with VRE and load forecasting to enable reliable real-time system operation. NREL has partnered with many system operators in the region to identify appropriate technology and grid modernization solutions. NREL and partners from system operators in the region will present on the challenges and some solutions that have been applied and share best practices such as energy management system upgrades, VRE forecasting framework, grid flexibility improvements, and staff training.

Laboratory Efficiency Strategies and the Smart Labs Program

Focusing on critical spaces, such as labs, will enable agencies to prioritize federal energy efficiency and decarbonization goals. FEMP's Smart Labs program is an example of emerging efficient laboratory building strategies. The benefits of this program include improved safety and health, reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, lower operating costs, reduced degradation, and increased retention and recruitment of top talent researchers and sciences. In this session, with the help of our national lab partners, Sandia National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, you will learn about the steps to implement a Smart Labs program of your own and the methods behind the high-performance laboratory building. The partners will share best practices in implementation, practical advice for building a team, and how to address these critical facilities.

OpenPATH - Leveraging Technology to Measure Travel Behavior

Shifting transportation to more sustainable modes is a key piece of the decarbonization puzzle. However, mobility behavior and travel patterns are difficult to influence because they are difficult to measure. OpenPATH provides a tool to capture longitudinal behaviors through a smartphone application. Agencies interested in gathering data about a population's travel behavior can set up a deployment of the app customized to the needs of their community. Partners can choose between simple mode and purpose labels or surveys for each trip to balance the level of user engagement with the associated burden. The labels, trip surveys, and an initial demographic survey can all be tailored to the specific context of the deployment. The OpenPATH tool is unique in its open-source nature, ability to gather detailed longitudinal travel data, and design allowing direct engagement with travelers. A valuable technological advancement, this tool enables partners to measure the way changes in the transportation landscape impact their community. The suite of tools includes both public and administrator dashboards. The public dashboard supports continuous data analysis through charts presenting trip information updated daily. The administrator dashboard displays geospatial data and supports data export. Example applications have included e-bike programs; gathering valuable metrics on increased access to opportunities and reduction in VMT, and studies aimed at understanding existing mobility behavior to see where advancements such as electric vehicles could fit into these habits. OpenPATH collects travel data in association with an initial demographic survey, enabling detailed insight into the behavior patterns or impact of a certain program on different populations.

Clean Energy for the Battery-to-EV Supply Chain: A Roadmap for Indonesia - Summary Brief

Indonesia has a unique opportunity to support the clean energy transition, enhance energy security, and spur economic growth with local battery manufacturing, bridging from the material supply all the way to pack designs and, ultimately, the manufacturing of electric cars. Following the elevation of United States and Indonesia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, leaders of both countries highlighted the importance of Net Zero World support for Indonesia's energy transition, including collaboration on low-carbon battery supply chains. In support of this agreement, Net Zero World has partnered with Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and other Indonesian partners to chart actionable steps for establishing a clean, resilient battery supply chain and circular economy. This partnership aims to position Indonesia as a regional leader in clean energy and can help attract investment in the domestic battery and electric vehicle (EV) sectors.

Commercialization of High-Density High Assay Low Enriched Uranium Fuel Systems

The Office of Reactor Conversion and Uranium Supply (NA 231) at the National Nuclear Security Administration leads the conversion effort for the United States High Performance Research Reactors (USHPRR). These reactors are the final civilian reactors in the US to transition from High Enriched Uranium (HEU) to high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU). Each of these reactors represents unique capabilities and no currently available fuel system meets their needs for conversion. The Fuel Fabrication (FF) Pillar of the USHPRR project is responsible for the fabrication of experimental elements, conversion elements, and establishing a commercial economical production capability. FF is also responsible to share with the domestic and international community the theoretical knowledge gained. Other pillars within the USHPRR project provide the experimental and conversion fuel designs, assist the reactors with licensing activities, and ensure the entire fuel cycle is evaluated. Over the last decade, FF has worked with the production partners at Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) and BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, Research and Test Reactors (BWXT). Y-12 has begun processing the alloy feedstock for the conversion elements with a qualified process. BWXT has started the final fabrication of the experimental elements. Once the experimental elements are complete, BWXT will begin conversion element fabrication. The FF Pillar resides at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and uses PNNL, universities, commercial vendors, and the DOE national laboratory system to evaluate process development activities to improve the process steps. FF supports the fabrication of two high density fuel systems, monolithic U-10Mo (Figure 1) and Uranium Silicide (Figure 2). The U-10Mo fuel system is further along the development process. FF assists in long term planning with the production partners. This includes ramping production of the elements from experimental quantities to annual steady state needs. As part of the ramp up, opportunities to improve yield and product quality are identified to ensure the fuel systems are cost effective.

Playa de Ponce's Advancements in Energy Affordability and Reliability

Un Nuevo Amanecer Inc. (UNA), a community-based nonprofit organization, partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project (ETIPP) to develop a Strategic Energy Plan (SEP) for the community of Playa de Ponce on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. The SEP provides a community-driven roadmap to improve local energy systems by identifying shared priorities, strategies, and actions that support a more reliable, affordable, and resilient energy future. Over a seven-month period, researchers from the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) worked with UNA, the Puerto Rico Hispanic Federation, community leaders, and residents to gather input through engagement workshops held in March and June 2025. These discussions helped define the community's energy vision and identify key challenges, including high electricity costs, unreliable service during extreme weather events, and risks to public health and safety - particularly for the community's aging population. This fact sheet summarizes the key elements of the Strategic Energy Plan, including four priority strategies organized around three focus areas identified by the community: energy reliability, safety and security, and stakeholder participation, education, and capacity building. Together, these strategies outline actionable pathways to strengthen Playa de Ponce's energy resilience and support long-term community goals. The plan serves as a shared reference for community members, local organizations, and government partners working to advance energy solutions in Playa de Ponce and complements broader municipal and island-wide planning efforts.
