Application of Chebyshev’s Inequality in Online Anomaly Detection Driven by Streaming PMU Data

The day-to-day operation of modern power systems is highly reliant on prompt and adequate situational-awareness. This can be achieved via various system monitoring functions such as anomaly detection, in which static thresholds are commonly utilized to distinguish the normal and the abnormal system states. However, a predetermined static threshold usually lacks the flexibility to adapt to unobserved scenarios. In this paper, we propose two self-adaptive synchrophasor data driven anomaly detection approaches based on Chebyshev’s Inequality. The proposed approaches have been evaluated with Kundur’s 2area system and Mini-WECC system. Experimental results verify that the proposed approaches can dynamically adapt to unprecedented scenarios, and detect anomalous events with lower false alarm rate compared to static threshold based detection.

Online Detection of Power Grid Anomalies via Federated Learning

Data from sensors is critical for advanced applica- tions that support efficient, reliable, and resilient electric grid operations. Historically, data from phasor measurement units (PMU) has been utilized to develop a wide variety of wide area control and protection applications suitable for power grid control centers. However, until now, most of these could not be deployed for automated operations due to a set of data corruption challenges and uncertainty in the incoming data pipeline. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting different variety of anomalies that are evident in different high- speed power grid measurements. The paper discusses a workflow for handling problems with data acquisition and highlights some of the key findings suitable for anomaly detection in a centralized and distributed environment. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated with results utilizing realistic PMU datasets

Online Dynamic Cyber-Attack Diagnosis in Power Electronics Systems Based on Few-Shot Learning

With increasing exposure to software-based sensing and control, power electronics systems are facing higher risks of cyber-physical attacks. To ensure system stability and minimize potential economic losses, it is critical to monitor the operating states and detect those attacks at the early stage. However, anomaly detection and diagnosis of attacks are still challenging, especially when labeled anomaly data is difficult or even infeasible to obtain. To overcome this problem, we propose a Few-Shot Learning (FSL) based approach for cyber-attack diagnosis leveraging the waveform data. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first attempt at leveraging FSL for cyber-attack diagnosis in power electronics systems. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach can achieve comparable diagnosis accuracy with the state-of-the-art data-driven methods using less than 0.04% of the training samples.

Online Output-Based Inertia Estimation of Modern Power Systems

The overall inertia of modern power systems is drastically impacted by the penetration level of converter-based resources (CBRs). The intermittent output of CBRs and their dependence on the weather conditions affirm the need for a realtime inertia estimation approach. This can help the transmission system operators(TSOs) to be continuously aware of the changes in the system inertia and to take suitable control actions. This paper is a step forward to a totally data-driven framework for power system inertia estimation using the available measurements from the phasor measurement units (PMUs). This inertia estimation is done based on the spectral analysis of the so-called Koopman linear operator. Koopman operator considers the relationship between the system's inertia and its dynamical response to slight disturbances in the load. Simulation results show that Koopman operator can approximate the system behavior in a reconstructed linear space hence inertia constant is estimated accurately.

Online Voltage Event Detection Using Synchrophasor Data with Structured Sparsity-Inducing Norms

This paper develops an accurate and computationally efficient data-driven framework to detect voltage events from PMU data streams. It develops an innovative Proximal Bilateral Random Projection (PBRP) algorithm to quickly decompose the PMU data matrix into a low-rank matrix, a row-sparse event-pattern matrix and a noise matrix. Here, the row-sparse pattern matrix significantly distinguishes events from normal behavior. These matrices are then fed into a clustering algorithm to separate voltage events from normal operating conditions. Large-scale numerical study results on real-world PMU data show that the proposed algorithm is computationally more efficient and achieves higher F scores than state-of-the-art benchmarks.

Online Detection of Inter-Turn Winding Faults in Single-Phase Distribution Transformers Using Smart Meter Data

Turn-to-turn faults between primary windings due to insulation degradation are a major cause of distribution transformer failure, and occur due to high levels of stress such as overloading and overheating. An additional consequence of these faults is an increased voltage on the transformer secondary due to effective change in turns ratio. This paper develops a novel method for early detection of insulation degradation and subsequent inter-turn winding failure by monitoring the transformer secondary voltage. The algorithm is based on a cumulative sum (CUSUM) statistic and compares voltages on neighbouring transformers to flag degrading assets. Results obtained from simulation as well as experimental data show that smart meter measurements can be utilized to achieve very high detection accuracy while keeping costs low. Here, the paper also demonstrates the validity of the algorithm in the presence of measurement noise, residential solar power injection etc.
