Improved adhesion of polyurethane-based nanocomposite coatings to tin surface through silane coupling agents

Conformal coatings with higher adhesion strength is critical for mitigating the growth of whiskers from the pure tin (Sn) or Sn-rich surfaces of the Pb-free electronics. Silane coupling agents have the ability to form a durable bond between polymeric coatings and metallic materials. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the effect of silane agents on the adhesion behavior of polyurethane (PU), polyurethane acrylate (PUA) and both coatings filled with silicone rubber (SR) nanoparticles on the tin solder pads. It was found that an isocyanate-based silane provided excellent adhesion for PU and PU + SR coatings and an acrylic-based silane for PUA and PUA + SR coatings on the tin surface. This was due to the reaction bond formation between the silane coupling agent and the coating. Hence, the selection of silane coupling agents with the organofunctional group similar to the coating material is crucial to improve the adhesion properties of the coating.

Size- and concentration-dependent Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ mixed luminescent characteristics of rare-earth-doped CaF 2 nanoparticles and their monolithic epoxy nanocomposites

CaF 2 is a promising luminescent host material for a wide range of applications, due to its high transparency, non-hygroscopy, low refractive index, low density, low backscattering efficiency, and abundance in nature. Here we report the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) characteristics of rare-earth-doped CaF 2 nanoparticles and their composite monoliths with epoxy with visible emissions. The CaF 2 nanoparticles of ca. 36, 108 and 305 nm were prepared by a facile solution-mixing process and subsequent hydrothermal treatment. As the particle size decreases, the luminescence intensity increases for single-doped particles, while oppositely decreases for codoped particles because of energy transfer. Further, Eu 2+ - and Tb 3+ -codoped CaF 2 nanoparticles exhibit red emission, providing an efficient path for red emission through an energy transfer by Tb 3+ bridging without direct Eu 3+ doping. The effects of size and concentration are found to be pronounced in CL than PL, as the charge transfer between Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ reduces the concentration quenching in CL. The luminescence emission characteristics of epoxy/CaF 2 monoliths are different from those of particles due to the interactions with the epoxy molecules, and thus the energy transfer is hindered in PL while not in CL, enabling them for high-energy irradiation applications.

Wastepaper-derived porous carbon supported cobalt nanocomposites for all solid-state flexible supercapacitor

The conversion of wastepaper into high-value carbon materials has gained significant attention as a sustainable strategy for energy storage applications. Owing to its low cost, abundance, and intrinsic fibrous structure, wastepaper serves as an attractive precursor for carbon-based electrode materials. In this work, a novel electrode comprising cobalt nanoparticles and Co 3 O 4 embedded in wastepaper-derived porous carbon has been developed for use in a flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor. The integration of cobalt nanoparticles and Co 3 O 4 introduces redox-active centres, which enhance the electrochemical activity of the carbon framework. Mean while, the interconnected porous and conductive carbon network enables rapid ion diffusion and efficient electron transport, synergistically improving the overall electrochemical performance. It delivers a high specific capacitance of 61.5 Fg -1 , a power density of 5143 W kg -1 , and an energy density of 9 Wh kg -1 at a current density of 2.5 A/ g. Furthermore, the device maintains outstanding cycling stability, retaining 82.86 % of its capacitance after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Practical applicability is confirmed through its ability to power

Magnetically recyclable nanocomposites via lanthanide-based MOFs grown on natural sea sponge: Screening hydrogenation of nitrophenol to aminophenol

Catalysts have played a significant role in chemical industries and received significant attention as a result. Unfortunately, many common catalytic systems are comprised of a small number of elemental species or use similar synthetic strategies, which potentially limit innovation in areas such as the discovery of new transformations. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been established as versatile materials employed in various applications that include catalysis; however, the majority of MOFs have been synthesized using transition metal building blocks, possibly hindering advances towards innovative materials with unique properties. Here this work reports the synthesis of MOFs based on lanthanide elements (Ln = Ce, Gd, La, and Sm), which demonstrate great potential yet are often overlooked. The Ln-based MOFs were grown in situ on natural sea sponge supports and Fe ion containing solution, followed by a thermal carbonization treatment to generate FeLn metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded on carbon support (FeLn@C). These nanostructured products exhibited good crystallinity and well-confined particle sizes. We then demonstrate that these hybrid materials can be used as effective heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the hydrogenation of nitrophenol to aminophenol in aqueous media. Besides, FeLn@C catalysts had a magnetic property due to Fe atoms in the NPs, which can be mechanically separated out from the aqueous solution since the catalysts are magnetically attracted to the external magnets. This magnetic recyclability combined with the usage of the natural materials highlight the importance of sustainability in the design of Ln-based MOFs and their catalytic applications.
