The Real Inputs Behind TCO: Duty Cycle Realism and Opportunity Costs using T3CO

NLR's Transportation Technology Total Cost of Ownership (T3CO) model provides realistic and robust analysis, capturing the impact of real world duty cycles and their variability in operating and opportunity costs. Case studies show that these contributions to costs can be significant and can alter conclusions about technology cost effectiveness.

Updating PV and Battery Bill Savings Calculations for Net Billing: New Best Practices for Input Data and Uncertainty

Jurisdictions are increasingly adopting compensation structures for distributed PV and PV-battery systems that price exported energy lower than energy consumed onsite (net billing rates). Standard methods for calculating the bill savings from PV and PV-battery systems were developed for net metering structures, and applying these same methods to net billing structures (such as using Typical Meteorological Year weather with actual year load) introduces bias errors that underestimate PV-battery system bill savings by between 1.5\% and 9\%, depending on the utility rate. We assess the magnitude of these errors and compare them to other sources of uncertainty when estimating the bill savings from PV and PV-battery systems under more complex utility rates.

Analysis of Power Electronic Solutions for Wide-Range Wave Energy Input

Wave energy is a largely untapped energy source with the potential to provide 290 TWh per year to the continental United States. As a new technology, wave energy converters are less efficient and reliable compared to established energy sources, leaving the vast energy of the sea largely unutilized. Wave energy is uniquely inconsistent, with large fluctuations. Paired with harsh operating environments and difficulty in repair, the power electronics designed to harvest wave energy need to be reliable, cost-effective, and able to work in a wide operating band. The literature on existing power electronics in wave energy converters and lessons learned across other industries provide a framework of topologies to simulate. WEC-Sim, an open-source hydrodynamic platform in MATLAB Simulink developed by the National Laboratory of the Rockies, was used to simulate a wide range of power electronics under a variety of wave conditions. This paper provides a comprehensive investigation into existing wave energy power electronics converters, state-of-the-art topologies that can be applied to wave energy, and novel solutions to wave conversion.

DC input current ripple reduction in SRM drive for high volumetric power density applications

A control system for a switched reluctance machine includes a capacitor and an inverter connected to the capacitor, wherein the inverter generates current signals and a ripple current returned to the capacitor. A switched reluctance machine (SRM) receives the current signals and generates a position signal. A controller receives the ripple current, current signal values of the current signals, and the position signal and generates desired reference current waveforms received by the inverter to adjust the current signals received by the SRM.

Trapped ion platform with optical input and output

In disclosed apparatus, a plurality of optical waveguides monolithically integrated on a surface ion trap substrate deliver light to the trapping sites. Electrical routing traces defined in one or more metallization levels deliver electrical signals to electrodes of the surface electrode ion trap. A plurality of photodetectors are integrated on the substrate and arranged to detect light from respective trapping sites.
