Laser-Camera Vision Sensing for Spacecraft Mobile Robot Navigation

The advent of spacecraft mobile robots-free-flyng sensor platforms and communications devices intended to accompany astronauts or remotely operate on space missions both inside and outside of a spacecraft-has demanded the development of a simple and effective navigation schema. One such system under exploration involves the use of a laser-camera arrangement to predict relative positioning of the mobile robot. By projecting laser beams from the robot, a 3D reference frame can be introduced. Thus, as the robot shifts in position, the position reference frame produced by the laser images is correspondingly altered. Using normalization and camera registration techniques presented in this paper, the relative translation and rotation of the robot in 3D are determined from these reference frame transformations.

Geometric Assessment of PlanetScope Imagery

Commercial companies such as Maxar, Planet Labs, and BlackSky have built large archives of high resolution (1-3 m) Earth observing data. The high temporal resolution and global coverage of these satellites makes commercial satellite images ideal for scientists studying rapidly changing processes such as flooding and fires. The high spatial resolution allows scientists to push studies to a fine scale such as monitoring agricultural growth experiments or detecting vehicles for traffic management. Scientists using these data need to know geolocation accuracy, band-to-band registration (BBR), and pixel footprint size to best determine appropriate applications as well as what extra steps they will need to take to use the data. Here, we find those key geometric properties for images from Planet Labs’ SuperDove constellation. Geolocation accuracy is assessed relative to WorldView images at globally distributed cities, band-to-band registration (BBR) is examined for every image we acquired (200+ images), and pixel footprint sizes are calculated from edge responses of the images over Cal/Val sites in China, India, or USA both near launch time and 1+ years after launch. We find that SuperDove geolocation is highly self-consistent with average global offsets among SuperDove images of 3.80 m (1.27 pixels). Despite this self-consistency, relative geolocation accuracy (with WorldView images as reference) varies by location from 3.20 m – 28.09 m mean offset. SuperDove BBR is sub-pixel and varies by band, with a mean radial offset relative to red band varying from 0.39 - 1.13 m. SuperDove image footprint size improves after 1+ years in orbit, with an average footprint size of 3.41 pixels (10.24 m) soon after launch and 3.23 pixels (9.7 m) 1+ years after launch. The BBR and self-consistency offsets are relatively small, given the large footprint sizes. A similarly extensive investigation is in progress for Planet Labs’ Dove-R series.

Multisensor Data Integration Techniques

The availability of data from sensors operating in several different wavelength regions had led to the development of new techniques and strategies for both data management and image analysis. Work is ongoing to develop computer techniques for analysis of integrated data sets. These techniques include coregistration of multisensor images, rectification of radar images in areas of topographic relief to ensure pixel to pixel registration with planimetric data sets, calibration of data so that signatures can be applied to remote areas, normalization of data acquired with disparate sensors and determination of extended spectral signatures of surface units. In addition, software is being developed to analyze coregistrated digital terrain and image data so that automated stratigraphic and structural analyses can be performed. These software procedures include: strike and dip determination, terrain profile generation, stratigraphic column generation, stratigraphic thickness measurements, structural cross-section generation, and creation of 3-D block diagrams. These techniques were applied to coregistered LANDSAT 4 Thematic Mapper (TM), Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS), and multipolarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data of the Wind River Basin in Wyoming.

Clementine High Resolution Camera Mosaicking Project: CL 6014; 0 deg N to 80 deg N Latitude, 270 deg E to 300 deg E Longitude - Volume 14

This compact disk (CD) is part of the Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) effort to mosaic Clementine I high resolution (HiRes) camera lunar images. These mosaics were developed through calibration and semi-automated registration against the recently released geometrically and photometrically controlled Ultraviolet/Visible (UV/Vis) Basemap Mosaic, which is available through the PDS, as CD-ROM volumes CL_3001-3015. The HiRes mosaics are compiled from non-uniformity corrected, 750 nanometer ("D") filter high resolution observations from the HiRes imaging system onboard the Clementine Spacecraft. These mosaics are spatially warped using the sinusoidal equal-area projection at a scale of 20 m/pixel. The geometric control is provided by the 100 m/pixel U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Clementine Basemap Mosaic compiled from the 750 nm Ultraviolet/Visible Clementine imaging system. Calibration was achieved by removing the image nonuniformity largely caused by the HiRes system's light intensifier. Also provided are offset and scale factors, achieved by a fit of the HiRes data to the corresponding photometrically calibrated UV/Vis basemap that approximately transform the 8-bit HiRes data to photometric units. The mosaics on this CD were compiled from sub-polar data (latitudes 80 degrees South to 80 degrees North; -80 to +80) within the longitude range 0-30 deg E. The mosaics are divided into tiles that cover approximately 1.75 degrees of latitude and span the longitude range of the mosaicked frames. Images from a given orbit are map projected using the orbit's nominal central latitude. This CD contains ancillary data files that support the HiRes mosaic. These files include browse images with UV/Vis context stored in a Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format, index files ('imgindx.tab' and 'srcindx.tab') that tabulate the contents of the CD, and documentation files. For more information on the contents and organization of the CD volume set refer to the "FILES, DIRECTORIES AND DISK CONTENTS" section of this document. The image files are organized according to NASA's Planetary Data System (PDS) standards. An image file (tile) is organized as a PDS labeled file containing an "image object".

Clementine High Resolution Camera Mosaicking Project: CL 6002; 0 deg S to 80 deg S Latitude, 0 deg E to 30 deg E Longitude - Volume 2
