WFIRST Low Order Wavefront Sensing and Control Testbed Performance under Flight Like Photon Flux

To maintain the required performance for the WFIRST Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) in a realistic space environment, a Low Order Wavefront Sensing and Control (LOWFS/C) subsystem is necessary. The WFIRST CGI LOWFS/C subsystem would use the Zernike wavefront sensor, which has the phase-shifting disk combined with the coronagraph’s focal plane mask, to sense the low-order wavefront drift and line-of-sight (LoS) error using the rejected starlight. The dynamic tests on JPL’s on the Occulting Mask Coronagraph (OMC) Testbed have demonstrated that LOWFS/C can maintain coronagraph contrast to better than 10-8 in presence of WFIRST-like line of sight and low order wavefront disturbances in both Shaped Pupil Coronagraph (SPC) and Hybrid Lyot Coronagraph (HLC) modes. However, the previous dynamic tests have been done using a bright source with photon flux equivalent to stellar magnitude of Mv = -3.5. The LOWFS/C technology development continues on the OMC testbed especially in evaluating and improving the LOWFS/C performance under the realistic photon flux that is equivalent to WFIRST Coronagraph target stars. Our recent testbed tests have demonstrated that the LOWFS/C can work cohesively with the stellar light suppression wavefront control, which brings broad band coronagraph contrast from 1x10-6 to 6x10-9, while LOWF/C is simultaneously suppressing the WFIRST like LoS and low order wavefront drift disturbances on a source that photon flux is equivalent to a Mv = 2 star. This demonstration mimics the CGI initial dark hole establish process on a bright reference star. We also demonstrated on the testbed that LOWFS/C can maintain the coronagraph contrast by suppressing the WFIRST like line-of-sight disturbances on a fainter Mv = 5 star. This mimics scenario of CGI science target observations. In this paper we will present the recent testbed results on LOWFS/C LoS loops and low order wavefront error correction loop performance on the flight like photon flux.

What Sensing Tells Us: Towards a Formal Theory of Testing for Dynamical Systems

Just as actions can have indirect effects on the state of the world, so too can sensing actions have indirect effects on an agent's state of knowledge. In this paper, we investigate "what sensing actions tell us", i.e., what an agent comes to know indirectly from the outcome of a sensing action, given knowledge of its actions and state constraints that hold in the world. To this end, we propose a formalization of the notion of testing within a dialect of the situation calculus that includes knowledge and sensing actions. Realizing this formalization requires addressing the ramification problem for sensing actions. We formalize simple tests as sensing actions. Complex tests are expressed in the logic programming language Golog. We examine what it means to perform a test, and how the outcome of a test affects an agent's state of knowledge. Finally, we propose automated reasoning techniques for test generation and complex-test verification, under certain restrictions. The work presented in this paper is relevant to a number of application domains including diagnostic problem solving, natural language understanding, plan recognition, and active vision.

DOE-GENIORS Dynamic Irradiation Testing

As part of the homogeneous actinides recycling strategy, the EURO-GANEX process is one of the most promising options to achieve the goal of minor actinides recovery. Improvements made to EURO-GANEX system have resulted in the emergence of the so-called New EURO-GANEX process, where the composition of the solvent has been modified by replacing TODGA and DMDOHEMA with cis-mTDDGA in the organic phase and SO3-Ph-BTP with PyTri-Diol in the aqueous phase in order to resolve important issues. The objective of this work is twofold: evaluate the gamma radiolytic resistance of the new EURO-GANEX process by dynamic irradiation conditions simulating the three main steps of the process, and validate the design of CIEMAT Náyade, CEA Marcel and INL irradiation loop devices since each of them mimics different aspects of the real process. Náyade and the INL loops could irradiate the organic and aqueous phases together, whereas in the CEA loop, the irradiated solvent is recycled continuously inside a platform with several stages of mixer-settlers containing aqueous flows simulating the three main steps of the process. The extraction performances and changes in the composition of the solvent have been analyzed during the irradiation experiment by different techniques: gamma spectrometry and ICP-MS/OES for cations or radioactive tracer extraction, and HPLC-MS to identify and quantify the degradation compounds. Despite some differences between the three-irradiation facilities, this inter-institutional study shows that these three comparative tools provide similar trends in the radiolytic stability of a liquid-liquid extraction system. Favourable extraction results for the different steps are obtained according to the static irradiation studies found in literature. However, the degradation of cis-mTDDGA is appreciable leading to degradation compounds, some of which form precipitates and produce important changes in viscosity, important aspects that must be addressed prior to the successful industrial application of the new EURO-GANEX process.

Vibration testing and dynamic studies of relays

Study has been undertaken to determine the separation criteria for a preloaded, idealized set of contacts when they are subjected to a steady-state sinusoidal excitation and when the elasticity of one contact is nonlinear. The study consists of two phases, theoretical and experimental.
